Hi,

While implementing (and testing) AgentX++ I found a point that has
not been discussed in the AgentX specification yet.

When a subagent registers a row of a table (let's say ifEntry.1-22.1)
at the master and a SNMP request for an instance of a non registered
row (e.g., ifIndex.2) comes in, how does the master agent finds out
whether it should return noSuchInstance (which would be correct) or
noSuchObject (which would be wrong)?

Since the master cannot know through the AgentX protocol,
that ifIndex is a multi-instance object, and since it cannot ask
any subagent about ifIndex.2 (because no subagent has registered
for that region) the master agent will have to return a noSuchObject
error.

Has anyone solved this dilemma?

TIA,
Frank

Heh. I don't remember saying quite that...

I think I was trying to imply that the CMU code is more of an AgentX
API which differs from the UCD code which allows the mib-code-writer
to not have to know if their code will be used in the SNMP agent
directly or in the agentx subagent. It's protocol independent, which
can make things easier in some ways as the AgentX (or SNMP) magic is
taken care of for you mostly.

Hi -

Any suggestions for what the (disman, agentx) mailing
list administrator should do in cases like the attached?

When traffic bounces, I attempt to notify the postmaster of the
relevant domain in order to let them know what's happening.
When I drop a subscriber due to bounces, I also notify that
domain's postmaster and the WG chair. In cases like this,
where mail for a domain's postmaster bounces, is there any
further course of action that would be worthwhile?

I don't think so.

Hi Murit,

The AgentX protocol (RFC2741) and MIB (RFC2742) represent the
IETF standards-track approach to interoperable extensible SNMP
agent environments. You can access these documents, additional
information sources, and learn how to subscribe to the AgentX
WG e-mail discussion list at:

   http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/agentx-charter.html

SMUX (as with DPI) was an earlier attempt at such an SNMP
extensible agent protocol that, for a variety of reasons,
did not progress toward full IETF standardization. Likewise,
there were/are a number of vendor-proprietary extensible
SNMP agent methodologies that have achieved some degree,
more or less, of marketplace deployment. The current hope
is that AgentX will prove to be sufficiently robust and
useful to foster wider standardization in this area.

>2. Can you please recommend me a ool/implementation for

As the AgentX WG chair, I certainly could not recommend
any...however, you can find links to known possibilities
in the "Implementations" section at the AgentX web site:

   http://www.scguild.com/agentx/

>Thanks in advance, Nurit.

You are welcome...let me know if the above info is
insufficient at this time...my recommendation is that
further discussion, if any, on this thread be continued
on the AgentX mailing list, agentx@dorothy.bmc.com.
