Hello All,

I've gotten around to finishing my review on this document. Aside from a
minor typo, I have two simple questions, just to clarify out of personal
interest:

> Specific instance A specific iCalendar instance is targeted by using
> its "RECURRENCE-ID" value as the item value. That value MUST
> correspond to the RECURRENCE-ID value as stored in the calendar
> object resource (i.e. without any conversion to UTC). If multiple
> items of this form are used, they MUST be unique values.
Can you clarify why you chose to not allow specifying this value in any
form, so that the server does timezone translation if needed?
> D. Upon successful creation of the attachment resource, and
> modification of the targeted calendar object resource, the
> server MUST return an appropriate HTTP success status
> response and include a "Cal-Managed-ID" header field
> containing the "MANAGED-ID" parameter value of the newly
> created "ATTACH" property.
Any specific reason to shorten "Calendar" to "Cal" here?

> Malicious content could be introduced into the Calendar Server by way
> of a managed attachment, and propagated to many end users via
> scheduling. Servers SHOULD check managed attachments for malicious
> or inappropriate content. Upon detecting of such content, servers
> SHOULD remove the attachment, following the rules described in
> Section 3.12.5.
"Calendar Server" should probably be lowercase here, as you are not
referring to a specific product.

I've added the shepherd writeup to the datatracker, there were no
irregularities. With those questions clarified I think this is good to
go. Thank you for working on this document, I am looking forward to
having it published.

Kind Regards,
Philipp

I don't recall the exact reason, but presumably its so that the server
can simply match the RECURRENCE-ID by value without having to do any
translation. Perhaps Cyrus and/or Arnaud remember the exact reasoning.

No technical reason as I recall. I'd recommend against changing it now
given the existence of a lot of Apple-deployed code.

Agreed. I will make this change.

I also need to look at Gren Elliot's review again and make any necessary
changes.

Hi,

If I recall correctly, while letting the server simply match the RECURRENCE=
-ID is a nice side effect, there are edge cases where the requirement is es=
sential in order to guarantee the correct behavior. Recurring meetings happ=
en over a span of time AND timezone definitions change over time. The timez=
one definitions include not only the offset at a particular time of year, b=
ut also the geographic region to which the rule applies. When the specifica=
tion was being developed there was one region that had overlapping timezone=
s and the choice of which timezone was applied implied a political affiliat=
ion (in a war zone.) Performing a translation on each server to which the i=
Calendar instance may be forwarded prior to storage could lead to confusion=
. Of course, the organizer may reside in an area where there is timezone i=
nstability over the duration of the recurrence, but presumably, the organiz=
er would be in the best position to know that an issue updates as needed.=20

I think we wanted to avoid the need for the server or client to have to do
any conversions, which could prove problematic particularly if the time
zone definitions the client and server have differ (which was something
that could happen at the time we wrote the initial spec, but is now less
likely to happen with the time zones by reference feature).

I don't recall any specific version for that choice. However, it would be
best not to change that given that existing deployments do make use of it.

Agreed. Ken can make that change.

Hi,
The document is in a good shape, but I have a few minor comments/questions:

In Section 3 HTTP PUT is not mentioned. I think it should be added.

All examples should use https: URI scheme.

In 3.7: if SIZE property is included, should its value be
replaced/ignored/validated?

In 3.12.3: is support for Expect: 100-continue required in compliant
servers?

In Section 8 (Security Considerations): is it worth mentioning
Denial-of-Service attacks?

Appendix B, page 31: just to help me understand the example: after
adding an attachment the RECURRENCE-ID added is the same as the "rid"
request in the attachment-add request.

Thank you,
Alexey

Hi,

Please find my comments regarding the current version. The document is in
good shape.

Yours,
Daniel

1. Introduction

"Formats such as VCARD are likely to be most useful." I think we need some
explanation. Is the VCARD used by the organizer or participant of the event
? If that is the case, it would be clearer to mention it explicitly.

"The following properties and components are defined in this
specification". As there are two kind of objects being defined, it would be
clarifying for the reader to specify for each item below what category they
belong to. My understanding is that only participant is a component others
are properties.

2. Components and properties

"In a break with this 'tradition' this specification introduces some of
these extensions as components rather than properties."

My reading is that components is not used as the iCal terminology here.
More specifically, this is not an iCal component. If that is the case,
maybe we could use another term. I am trying to find one but agree this is
not easy.

3. Typed References

"""
These properties are designed to handle common use cases in event
publication. It is generally important to provide information about
the organizers of such events. Sponsors wish to be referenced in a
prominent manner. In social calendaring it is often important to
identify the active participants in the event, for example a school
sports team, and the inactive participants, for example the parents.
"""

I also have the impression that properties is not associated to teh ICal
properties. In fcat I see Participant as a component. In this case saying
the participant components and associated properties seems to be clearer to
me at least.

5.2. Restype

"""
Description: This parameter MAY be specified on STRUCTURED-RESOURCE
and provides a way to differentiate multiple properties.

Values for this parameter are taken from the values defined in
[todo]. New resource types SHOULD be registered in the manner
      laid down in that specification
"""

[todo] needs to be completed.

5.3. Order

"""
Description: The ORDER parameter is OPTIONAL and is used to indicate
the relative ordering of the corresponding instance of a property.
Its value MUST be an integer greater than or equal to 1 that
quantifies the order. Lower values correspond to a higher level
of ordering, with 1 being the highest.
"""

I would like to make sure and explicit that ordering is performed from low
to high value or the reverse.

Follows the nits provided by the datatracker:

nits:
idnits 2.14.01

/tmp/draft-ietf-calext-eventpub-extensions-02.txt:

Checking boilerplate required by RFC 5378 and the IETF Trust (see
  http://trustee.ietf.org/license-info):

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

     No issues found here.

  Checking nits according to http://www.ietf.org/id-info/1id-guidelines.txt:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

     No issues found here.

Checking nits according to http://www.ietf.org/id-info/checklist :

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

** There is 1 instance of too long lines in the document, the longest one
being 1 character in excess of 72.

** The abstract seems to contain references ([RFC5545]), which it
shouldn't. Please replace those with straight textual mentions of the
     documents in question.

-- The draft header indicates that this document updates RFC5545, but the
abstract doesn't seem to directly say this. It does mention RFC5545
though, so this could be OK.

-- The draft header indicates that this document updates RFC5546, but the
abstract doesn't seem to mention this, which it should.

  Miscellaneous warnings:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Using the creation date from RFC5545, updated by this document, for
     RFC5378 checks: 2008-10-31)

(Using the creation date from RFC5546, updated by this document, for
     RFC5378 checks: 2008-07-14)

-- The document seems to lack a disclaimer for pre-RFC5378 work, but may
have content which was first submitted before 10 November 2008. If you
have contacted all the original authors and they are all willing to
grant
the BCP78 rights to the IETF Trust, then this is fine, and you can
ignore
this comment. If not, you may need to add the pre-RFC5378 disclaimer.
(See the Legal Provisions document at
     http://trustee.ietf.org/license-info for more information.)

-- The document date (April 21, 2017) is 9 days in the past. Is this
     intentional?

Checking references for intended status: Proposed Standard

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

(See RFCs 3967 and 4897 for information about using normative
references
     to lower-maturity documents in RFCs)

== Unused Reference: 'RFC2434' is defined on line 1079, but no explicit
reference was found in the text

== Unused Reference: 'RFC3688' is defined on line 1084, but no explicit
reference was found in the text

== Outdated reference: draft-ietf-calext-extensions has been published as
     RFC 7986

** Obsolete normative reference: RFC 2434 (Obsoleted by RFC 5226)

     Summary: 3 errors (**), 0 flaws (~~), 3 warnings (==), 4 comments (--).

Run idnits with the --verbose option for more detailed information
about
     the items above.

The IESG has received a request from the Calendaring Extensions WG
(calext) to consider the following document:
- 'CalDAV Managed Attachments'
  <draft-ietf-calext-caldav-attachments-02.txt> as Proposed Standard

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits
final comments on this action. Please send substantive comments to the
ietf@ietf.org mailing lists by 2017-05-14. Exceptionally, comments may be
sent to iesg@ietf.org instead. In either case, please retain the
beginning of the Subject line to allow automated sorting.
