A new version of I-D, draft-mcdysan-conex-other-usecases-00.txt has been su=
ccessfully submitted by Dave McDysan and posted to the IETF repository.

Filename: draft-mcdysan-conex-other-usecases
Revision: 00
Title: Proposed Additional Use Cases for Congestion Exposure
Creation_date: 2010-10-17
WG ID: Independent Submission
Number_of_pages: 7

Abstract:
This draft proposes some use cases for inclusion in the conex Working group=
charter's deliverable for an informational RFC covering use case descripti=
on. These use cases are in addition to and/or complement those described in=
[UseCases], and focus on forms of congestion exposure that involve resourc=
es other than queues and timeframes other than real-time.

Marcelo,

Two requests for ConEx agenda slots below:

1/
Title: ConEx Concepts and Abstract Mechanism
Background I-D: draft-mathis-conex-abstract-mech-00
Presenter: Bob Briscoe (co-author for Matt Mathis who won't be in Beijing)
Duration: 10mins should be enough, but longer if you want debate.

2/
Title: Auditing ConEx signals: Handling inherent feedback delay.
Background I-D: <draft-mathis-conex-abstract-mech-00>

This talk accompanies #1, but goes deeper into one aspect that the
w-g needs to debate and reach consensus on: how to allow for the min
1RTT delay between an actual congestion signal and a ConEx re-echo of
that signal. Specifically for the function checking for cheating (we
decided to call this the audit function). The talk will argue that
the transport, not the network, should be responsible for allowing
for this delay, which justifies an additional Credit codepoint (aka
Green) in the wire protocol.

Presenter: Bob Briscoe
Duration: pref. 20mins if room

Although there is a little text on this in our abstract-mech draft,
the intention is to go beyond that with a more detailed presentation
that draws on experiments we have done in BT on a proposed auditing
implementation.

Cheers

Bob

Abstract

The IPv6 header does not contain any reserved bits for future
expansion. This document sets aside 4 bits from the flow label field
   for future expansion.

Two comments:

1) as far as I'm concerned, the entire 20 bit flow label field is =
"reserved bits". While there have been periodic discussions of how it =
might be used, I don't see a lot of use of it.
2) unless 6man agrees, it's probably not a good idea to build on this =
beyond making a good case for reserved bits.

Ok

understand, perhaps it is then best to wait for the discussion in 6man firs=

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Internet Area Working Group Working Group of the IETF.

Title : IP Router Alert Considerations and Usage
	Author(s) : F. Le Faucheur
	Filename : draft-ietf-intarea-router-alert-considerations-02.txt

The IP Router Alert Option is an IP option that alerts transit
routers to more closely examine the contents of an IP packet. RSVP,
PGM, IGMP/MLD, MRD and GIST are some of the protocols that make use
of the IP Router Alert option. This document discusses security
aspects and usage guidelines around the use of the current IP Router
Alert option. Specifically, it provides recommendation against using
the Router Alert in the end-to-end open Internet as well as identify
controlled environments where protocols depending on Router Alert can
be used safely. It also provides recommendation about protection
approaches for Service Providers. Finally it provides brief
guidelines for Router Alert implementation on routers.

Hi All,

Here is an updated version of the ConEx Concepts and Use Cases draft. =
The changes in this version mainly reflect the newly released -00 draft =
of the Abstract ConEx Mechanism. We have also done a lot of work on the =
definitions.

I'm afraid we haven't had time to incorporate some of the suggested =
changes to the actual use cases. I promise we will get on with those in =
the next revision...

Meanwhile since we now have a draft version of the mechanism draft and =
are more sure of what goes in which draft, I think this is probably =
ready for adoption by the working group.=20

Sorry folks, I have just noticed several spelling mistakes/typos :(

Serves me right for leaving this so close to the deadline and trying to rush
it!

ConEx folks,

I have posted revisions of the old re-ECN drafts just to keep them
live on the IETF servers for people referring to them. I've left them
with their old tsvwg filenames so it's clear we have no intention to
propose re-ECN as a solution for ConEx.

>Abstract:
>This document introduces a new protocol for explicit congestion
>notification (ECN), termed re-ECN, which can be deployed
>incrementally around unmodified routers. The protocol works by

During the Conex meeting in IETF79, we will discuss the abstract
mechanism and the use cases.
If the feedback is good enough, we will ask for adoption of the
documents presented.
So please read the documents and comment in the ml and/or in the
meeting. Be ready to state whether you
think the documents we have serve as a good starting point for our
deliverables.

Regards, marcelo

Now, we stated that we are planning to ask for adoption of WG documents
for the abstract mechanism and for the use cases. In the case of the use
cases, the situation deserve more clarification. We have two documents:
draft-moncaster-conex-concepts-uses and
draft-mcdysan-conex-other-usecases-00.txt.
draft-moncaster-conex-concepts-uses was discussed in the previous
meeting and some changes were requested in order to call for adoption.
The plan is to ask the WG if you feel that the changes have been made
and the draft is in good shape to be the basis for our deliverable (i.e.
we will ask for adoption of this document)
draft-mcdysan-conex-other-usecases-00.txt otoh, is a new draft that
presents additional use cases. The question that will be asked to the WG
is whether you feel that the use cases covered in this draft should be
covered and in the case that the answer is affirmative, we will proceed
to integrate these new use cases to the other uses cases we already have.

Comments?

Regards, marcelo (on behalf of the co-chairs)

Works for me.

As stated in my draft, the intent was to be complementary to the moncaster =
draft.

Seems OK to me too. I'm perfectly happy to try and expand the number of use
cases, at least to start with. Later on I imagine it will become clearer
which use cases will really work...

BTW Dave, I will send some comments on your draft by the start of the
meeting...

Hi Matt, Bob,

you introduce a separate signal to send 'credits' but you don't really explain
why this is needed. Can you give some hints about this?

Is this needed for the dropper to ensure that the sender declares its
congestion honestly or it this mostly helpful to get more accurate congestion
information in the network? What are the security implication here?

Thx,
Mirja

Hi

I agree with Mirja
I would say that this is probably the most complex part in ConEx, I recall =
that this was explained with some detail in the one of the "Re-ECN for TCP"=
drafts (don't remember which), I did not fully get it then so I would real=
ly welcome a thorough explanation of this.

/Ingemar

Cost control for the Internet access providers (AP) influ- ences not =
only the nominal speeds offered to the customers, but also other, more =
controversial, policies related to traf- fic shaping and discrimination. =
Given that the cost for the AP is determined by the peak-hour traffic =
(e.g. through the 95th-percentile), the individual user contribution =
towards the aggregate cost is not a linear function of its byte usage. =
In this paper we propose a metric for evaluating the contri- bution each =
individual user has on the peak demand, that is based on Shapley value, =
a well known game-theoretic con- cept. Given the computational =
complexity of calculating the Shapley value, we use a Monte Carlo method =
for approxi- mating it with reasonable accuracy. We employ our method- =
ology to study a dataset that logs per-subscriber temporal usage =
patterns over one month period for 10K broadband subscribers of a =
European AP and report observed results.=
