Mirja,

What exactly do you intend the Section 2 to be - is this Section meant to
be an an Overview of the sender side modifications? If so, can we
explicitly state so.

I am asking because the actual details of the sender size modifications are
described in Section 3 and 4.

A couple of comments in line.

How about:

"This section gives an overview of actions that need to be taken by a TCP sender
that would like to use ConEx signaling."

A reference to the subsequent sections is given in the last paragraph below. Is
this sufficient for you?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
 This draft is a work item of the Congestion Exposure Working Group of the IETF.

        Title : IPv6 Destination Option for ConEx
        Authors         : Suresh Krishnan
                          Mirja Kuehlewind
                          Carlos Ralli
	Filename        : draft-ietf-conex-destopt-08.txt
	Pages           : 11
	Date            : 2014-11-10

Abstract:
   ConEx is a mechanism by which senders inform the network about the
   congestion encountered by packets earlier in the same flow. This
   document specifies an IPv6 destination option that is capable of
   carrying ConEx markings in IPv6 datagrams.

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-conex-destopt/

There's also a htmlized version available at:

Dear all,

The CONEX WG is currently working on these working group documents [1]:

1) draft-ietf-conex-abstract-mech
2) draft-ietf-conex-destopt
3) draft-ietf-conex-mobile

Draft 1) has passed the IETF last call and I am waiting for the last
missing edits and once those edits are in (or someone convinces me that
I have missed the edits), this draft will go for IESG review.

For draft 2) and 3) I have seen recent updates and I did talk with some
of the authors.
The feedback I got so far, is that the drafts are ready for WGLC. I have
kindly asked the chairs to get the Working Group Last calls started on
Monday, Nov 17, in order to move these drafts further towards AD review
and the following steps.

Further, the plan is to close the working group on December 1st, after
having the working group drafts completed the WGLC.

Thanks for the work and let me know if you have any questions, comments
or suggestions!

   Martin

Dear all,

None of the chairs is on-site and the remaining WG drafts are close to
WGLC so there is no need to have a WG meeting.

I will cancel the WG session.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
 This draft is a work item of the Congestion Exposure Working Group of the IETF.

        Title : TCP modifications for Congestion Exposure
        Authors         : Mirja Kuehlewind
                          Richard Scheffenegger
	Filename        : draft-ietf-conex-tcp-modifications-06.txt
	Pages           : 14
	Date            : 2014-11-13

Abstract:
   Congestion Exposure (ConEx) is a mechanism by which senders inform
   the network about the congestion encountered by previous packets on
   the same flow. This document describes the necessary modifications
   to use ConEx with the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-conex-tcp-modifications/

There's also a htmlized version available at:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-conex-tcp-modifications-06

A diff from the previous version is available at:
http://www.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=draft-ietf-conex-tcp-modifications-06

Please note that it may take a couple of minutes from the time of submission
until the htmlized version and diff are available at tools.ietf.org.

Nice draft! Especially the section on mitigating flooding attacks by
using preferential dropping. A couple of nits:

* 4. ConEx Destination Option (CDO)
The CDO has an alignment requirement of (none).
-> The CDO has no alignment requirement.

* 10.  Security Considerations
"The chg bit in the CDO option type."
chg bit?

Thanks!
Nandita

Thanks! the draft reads so much better than the last version and I had
no difficulty following. A few comments (mostly nits):

* "Given the above, and in the light of the significant increase of
overall data volume in 3G networks, Deep-Packet-Inspection (DPI) is
often considered a desirable function to have in the EPC --
despite..."
EPC -> EPS (?)
If it is EPC, then expand it as this is the first time it's appearing.

* 2.1. ConEx as a Basis for Traffic Management
"
1. It can enable or enhance flow policy-based traffic management. At
present, DPI-based resource management is often used to prioritize
certain application classes with respect to others in overload
situations,...

2. It can reduce the need for complex DPI by allowing for a bulk
packet traffic management system that does not have to consider the
application classes flows belong to and individual sessions...
"
Both 1 and 2 are attempting to use ConEx to be used in place of the
more complex DPI based systems. But I think you are attempting to
enumerate two _different_ ways in which ConEx can be used to reduce
the need for DPI. I understand (1), but (2) is less clear.

Could you in particular either edit the first para of point# 2 above,
to _clearly_ state how it's different from point #1.

* 2.3 Accounting for Congestion Volume

"This would not require any new interface (reference points) at all."
What do you mean by this sentence - reference points?

* 2.4 Partial vs. Full Deployment

About this point: the prior points 2.1 - 2.3 actually adhere to the
title of this Section "ConEx as a Basis for Traffic Management".
Partial versus Full doesn't exactly fill this category. It reads more
about: if ConEx were to be deployed in mobile networks then a partial
deployment also makes sense and a full deployment as such isn't a
necessary condition for sing ConEx.

Is this correct? And if so, should it belong here in this section?

It seems to be that this section would be more apt in Section 3 where
you are already talking about deployment scenarios.

* 3.1.  Possible Deployment Scenarios
Figures 1, 2, 3 have some abbreviations S-GW and P-GW that you don't
really mention in the description. Could you expand these somewhere?
If not necessary, then remove these abbreviations.

* 3.1.  Possible Deployment Scenarios
Figure 4 has some further acronyms not referred to in the text: DL congestion?

* " We consider all three scenarios to be relevant and believe that
all of them are within the scope of the CONEX WG charter. A more
detailed description will be provided in a future version of this
document."

Remove this? Do we expect a future version of this doc.?

* 3.2.2. CONEX Functions in the Mobile Network

"In the EPS, per-user information is normally part of the user profile
(stored in the HSS) that would be accessed by PCC entities such as the
PCRF for dynamic updates, enforcement etc."

What is PCC, PCRF, HSS?

* 4. Summary
Shorten the summary. Repetition of text from the main sections, so can
be brief here.
The four classifications are useful.

Thanks!
Nandita

Mirja and Richard,

Thanks! for the draft. Some comments below:

* Introduction

"First congestion information have to be extracted from loss or ECN
feedback in TCP as described in section 3"... ".
Remove the extra quotes.

*
"It is therefore recommend to use the SACK extension when using TCP with ConEx."
It is therefore recommended...

* " This document describes congestion accounting for both TCP with
and without the Selective Acknowledgment (SACK) extension [RFC2018] in
section 3.1.
...
The detailed mechanism to respectively set the L bit in response to
loss- based congestion feedback signal is given in section 4.1."

"The congestion accounting for both, with the classic ECN feedback as
well as a more accurate ECN feedback are explained in detail in
section 3.2 while the setting of the E bit in response to ECN-based
congestion feedback is again detailed in section 4.1."

This jumps around around describing Section 3.1 -> Section 4.1 ->
Section 3.2 -> and back to Section 4.1

Suggestion is to consolidate to keep all the Section 3 material by
itself and Section 4 material by itself.

Also the last three paragraphs of the Intro. seem disconnected with
the rest. The para starting with "Section 2 provides an overview of
the needed modifications for TCP senders to implement ConEx..."
already laid out the Section contents.

* Accounting Congestion
Reword the first sentence.

A ConEx sender maintains two counters: one that accounts congestion
byte-wise based on the congestion information received by loss
detection, and a second that accounts for ECN based congestion
feedback.

* 3.1.1 Without SACK Support

The last para of Section 3.1.1:

"At this point of time in the transmission, in the worst case, all
packets in flight minus three that trigged the dupACks could have been
lost. For each retransmission that is sent, the LEG will still be
increased but the LEC will also be decreased by the payload size of
the retransmission. During the following RTT, LEC should be reduced
by SMSS for each ACK that is received. Thus after one RTT the LEC
estimates the number of outstanding bytes that should be ConEx L
marked. To not further delay this information, now LEG should be
increased by LEC. From then on every following retransmission should
only reduce the LEC and not increase the LEG until the LEC is zero, as
those bytes were already accounted."

Have you considered putting the above in a pseudo code:

On a retransmission:
    XXX

On receipt of ACK:
    XXX

* 5. Loss of ConEx information
"Of course also packets..."
-> Packets carrying ConEx can also get lost.

6. Timeliness of the ConEx Signals
nodewith -> node with
avoiad -> avoid
