Dear members of teh DNS directorate and incoming OPS/INT ADs,

traditionally we've been late in scheduling a session for this upcoming
IETF and since the previous occasions showed that dinner/lunch meetings turn
out to be suboptimal, I'd like to propose we find a one hour slot to discuss
the future setup during the regular meeting times, second half of the
week (Wed-Fri). I'd start with Wed 1300, but we can set up a doodle
if there's a chance to find a common slot at all.

Regards,
  Peter

This sounds fine; if we did this, though, who would actually manage that =

I guess I would ask what we want to achieve with this meeting.

We've had three meetings in a row now where we said that, real soon,
we'd have a proposal for a new mode of organization. It appears to be
an indicator of either the cycles we have or the relative importance
we place on this that no such proposal has come forward (I figure I
can make this criticism, since I was one of the people supposed to do
the proposing).

We're going to have a constitutional problem soon, however, because if
DNSEXT isn't closed before the week is out it will be next week. So
two ex-officio members will in principle disappear.

What would we like from the directorate? It seems to me that the
thing we have most fallen down on -- ensuring that people are tracking
work that has DNS consequences -- is the thing most urgently needed.
So I'd like to propose a reorganization in which we look for explcit
reviewer volunteers, and have a performance requirement to give us a
mechanism to remove those participants who are too busy actually to do
the work from the roster. (We have a lot of these.)

The directorate could also function as the expert pool from which we
select experts for RRTYPE and EDNS0 OPT code assignments.

If people like this idea, then if we're going to meet I'd like to talk
about people we'd want to approach to be on the directorate.

We've had seven entries on the Doodle poll:

http://www.doodle.com/zrkrw8r5epx3ub2k

... and the only time that everyone can manage is 3pm - 4pm tomorrow,
Wednesday 13 March. I suggest we go for that.

Where shall we meet?

Hi all,
The ALTO WG is considering the adoption of a draft focused on the
discovery of an ALTO server using DNS (but not SRV records). Martin
(TSV AD) has requested an early DNS Directorate review. Could I get a
volunteer (or two) to review the draft for DNS sanity?

Regards,
Brian

I reviewed the document and this is a well written clear document with =
some deficiencies.

The introduction is real good at explaining what the document is =
attempting.

The procedure(s) proposed are based of the implicit assumption that =
provisioning of reverse DNS is =20
somehow related to service provision for another protocol, which may or =
may not be the case.=20

Question #1: How is dual stack handled in queries?=20
in sequence or in parallel ?=20
if sequence which one first ?=20

Question #2 What about hosts with multiple links?=20

The procedures expect hope to get back PTR records and the name in the =
PTR record=20
is used for further lookups. (good)=20
The fundamental question is are all attempts to find PTR exhausted =
before going to next step?=20

Question #3: what about the case when there are multiple PTR records in =
the answer?=20

If the lookup fails the procedure hopes to find SOA record in the =
negative answer,=20
extracts from the SOA record the name of the "Master DNS server" MNAME,=20=

and uses that name to do further lookups.=20

Comment #1: Master DNS servers are not always reachable, as they are =
hidden masters or=20
traffic protected. Frequently there is no correlation between the zone =
name and the Mname
I did a randomly selected reverse lookup on 185.55.55.55=20
  185.in-addr.arpa.	3600	IN	SOA	pri.authdns.ripe.net. =
dns.ripe.net. =85=85.

In this case it is obvious (to a human) the SOA is useless and the =
algorithm should terminate,=20
what the procedure as specified will do is to cause many queries to the =
RIR name servers for lots of names that have=20
no PTR records and no delegations.=20

Question #4: Why MNAME but not the owner name of the SOA ? (explain or =
point to explanation)=20

Question #5: What is the point of the explicit SOA query for reverse =
name and why do editors expect to get a different answer than in the PTR =
question ?

Section #4:=20
there is no mention about the expected extra traffic to RIR (and or ISP) =
DNS server when the PTR lookup fails,=20
I would like to see some text on how to abort the algorithms early I.e.=20=

SOA present --- useful SOA ---> do lookup=20
               +-------- useless SOA ---> algorithm failed=20

This boat has probably sailed but I will ask it anyway:=20
Question #6 Why not place the NAPTR records in the reverse tree?=20

Editing comment: It would be helpful if the text from section 3 bullet 1 =
about what address to look up was included in section 2 before the=20
diagrams of the algorithms (or at least pointer to address selection).=20=
