standards for DNS-
based naming and service discovery that fill the gap between the extrema of
zero-conf
mDNS and fully-managed global DNS. The use cases will be laid out on a
spectrum of
increasing administrative cost (where the cost must be weighed against the
benefits).
LLNs (i.e. multi-link subnets) must be considered in any proposed solution.

Stuart also described his hybrid proxy solution and I think there's a good
understanding
of it now amongst this core group. I would be very happy to see a
prototype running in
Berlin. You may have seen the writeup that Stuart posted regarding how
DNS-SD works
with a conventional DNS infrastructure. I have been experimenting with
AppleTV and will
post a solution that can be deployed on campus at once, albeit with some
administration
required.

I'll start working on the next requirements draft later this week based on
the excellent
comments by you and others so yes, we should have plenty of time to line up
our ducks
before the next IETF. I'm hoping we can pick up some of the enthusiastic
criticism that
was appearing over on the homenet list. One area where we still need work
is on the
security section; what are the new security issues raised by the use cases
and how do
we deal with them?

I need to verify this, but I believe Ralph Droms will be replaced by Ted
Lemon as the
responsible AD going forward.

Most important did you drink any good beer? Hope you drank one for me. :)

hotel (it being

regarding

thought was
Chinese for some reason, but I stand corrected ;-)

Regards, -K-

Thanks

Was there a successful "Bar Bof" for mdnsext at IETF 86. Minutes from a
Bar Bof is most definitely expecting too much.

But, were there any discussions or conclusions worth reporting? Is a
working group proposal moving forward?

Most important did you drink any good beer? Hope you drank one for me. :)

Thanks

Part of the whole discovery process gets the TXT record for the service which provides things like make-and-model, product string, etc. OS X uses that to locate an appropriate driver.

Also in that TXT record is a priority for the protocol - LPD (_printer), AppSocket (_pdl-datastream), and IPP (_ipp) are the common ones. OS X queries the TXT record for each of the supported print protocols and uses the priority value to choose which protocol to use. The priority value is set by the manufacturer and is sometimes available as a configuration option in the printer's web interface...

I previously submitted this draft:

<http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-cheshire-mdnsext-hybrid-01.txt>

Some people have asked me for a more detailed description of how clients =
perform the unicast queries. The Hybrid Proxy proposal talks about how =
information gets into the DNS namespace, but how does that data get back =
out again? I thought I'd illustrate that with a familiar example we've =
been using for many years here at IETF: Printing to the Terminal Room =
printer.

Here=92s a detailed step-by-step walkthrough of how we find the IETF =
Terminal Room printer, starting with DHCP, and ending with a TCP =
connection sending the data to the printer. When you print from your Mac =
or iPhone, and give no second thought to how it magically knew about the =
IETF Terminal Room printer, this is what it's doing under the covers.

First, let=92s see what my Mac learned from the local DHCP server:

> % scutil

Option_15 is Domain Name. What domain name?

> % echo 6d656574696e672e696574662e6f7267 0A | xxd -r -p
> meeting.ietf.org

Great. Does meeting.ietf.org recommend we look in any Wide Area Service =
Discovery domains?

Note, I can ask *any* DNS server this question and I will get the same =
answer. Let=92s ask Google DNS instead:

> % dig @8.8.8.8 lb._dns-sd._udp.meeting.ietf.org. ptr

I still get the same answer. The DNS server I ask doesn=92t have to be =
=93on=94 my =93local=94 network (whatever that means). I=92m in Florida. =
Google DNS is I-don=92t-know-where, 13 hops away, but it still gives the =
right answer.

(For the rest of this example I'll use Google DNS for all the queries.)

In this case the PTR is self-referential =97 meeting.ietf.org is =
advising us to look in meeting.ietf.org, but it could easily be set up =
to direct us elsewhere.

But in this case it=92s suggesting we look for services in =
meeting.ietf.org, so let=92s do that:

A Mac with appropriate printer drivers installed will look for this =
service:

> % dig +short @8.8.8.8 _pdl-datastream._tcp.meeting.ietf.org. ptr
> term-printer._pdl-datastream._tcp.meeting.ietf.org.

There=92s one printing service available here, called =93term-printer=94. =
That=92s what you see when you press the =93+=94 button in the Print & =
Fax Preference Pane on Mac OS X.

To actually use it, the client uses this:

> % dig +short @8.8.8.8 =
term-printer._pdl-datastream._tcp.meeting.ietf.org. srv
> 0 0 9100 term-printer.meeting.ietf.org.
>=20
> % dig +short @8.8.8.8 term-printer.meeting.ietf.org. AAAA
> 2001:df8::48:200:74ff:fee0:6cf8

So, to use this printer, the Mac connects to =
[2001:df8::48:200:74ff:fee0:6cf8]:9100, and uses the installed printer =
driver, which speaks the appropriate vendor-specific printing protocol =
for that printer.

If you=92re using an iPhone then you don=92t have vendor-specific =
printer drivers installed; instead it uses this generic IPP-based =
printing service:

> % dig +short @8.8.8.8 _universal._sub._ipp._tcp.meeting.ietf.org. ptr
> term-printer._ipp._tcp.meeting.ietf.org.

There=92s one IPP-based printing service available here, called =
=93term-printer=94. Same name as the pdl-datastream printing service, =
and same physical hardware, but different printing protocol.

To actually use it, the client uses this:

> % dig +short @8.8.8.8 term-printer._ipp._tcp.meeting.ietf.org. srv
> 0 0 631 term-printer.meeting.ietf.org.
>=20
> % dig +short @8.8.8.8 term-printer.meeting.ietf.org. aaaa
> 2001:df8::48:200:74ff:fee0:6cf8

Note: Same address as before, but different port number.

To use this printer, the iPhone connects to =
[2001:df8::48:200:74ff:fee0:6cf8]:631, and uses IPP to print.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how automatic Wide Area DNS-Based =
Service Discovery works.

Here at IETF, the records are added to the DNS manually by our capable =
network volunteers. The idea of the Hybrid Proxy is to populate the DNS =
namespace automatically, making Wide Area DNS-Based Service Discovery =
available to a broader community of users.

I've been reminded that open mic at the end of the tech. plenary has been
known to
run long. I'll just say in advance that the opportunities for
eating/drinking/working
at this hotel are limited. There seems to be only one bar, in the main
building up
the stairs from the lobby. We can meet there by 8PM and find a table
either on
that level or below on the ground (pool) level. There's also a deli on
that level. If
you don't see us by the bar, look downstairs.

Regards, -K-

Greetings,

I've heard from several folks who are available tonight and we will
meet at the podium as planned. However, I've also heard from several
who would like to attend tonight but cannot. Therefore, I'd propose that
we hold several small meetings if there's interest. I've proposed some
time slots in a Doodle poll: http://www.doodle.com/exutytxihssrwpx2
Sign up if you're available and we'll meet if there's a quorum. Note
proposed times are EDT.

Regards, -K-

Greetings,

I'd like to make some progress this week on the mdnsext requirements draft,
based on the many
excellent comments that were made on the mailing list. I propose that we
meet near the podium
tomorrow (Mon) night after the conclusion of the Technical Plenary and
decide on a destination
from there. I am also available Wed or Thurs evening if we can get a group
of five or more to work
on this. Send me email to indicate interest and availability. I'll scout
for meeting places tomorrow.

Regards, -K-
