Hello,

The chairs would like to draw the WG's attention to an IPR statement on the Discovery Proxy:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/ipr/2119/ <https://datatracker.ietf.org/ipr/2119/>

This statement was filed in 2013 on draft-cheshire-mdnsext-hybrid-01 and incorrectly withdrawn later; it has now been reinstated.
draft-cheshire-mdnsext-hybrid-01 has now become draft-ietf-dnssd-hybrid-07 which was recently submitted by the WG to the IESG.
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-dnssd-hybrid-07 <https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-dnssd-hybrid-07>

We believe that the WG previously had no objections to the Hybrid Proxy draft (now referred to as the Discovery Proxy draft) proceeding within the IETF with the associated IPR statement.
However, if any such concerns exist, please let the chairs know. As a reminder, last call for this draft ends on 2017-10-12.

Regards,
David Schinazi

Summary: This document is ready for publication as a Proposed Standard

Major issues: N/A

Minor issues: N/A

Nits/editorial comments:
Given the confusion I experienced reading the early portions of the
document, a reference at the end of the introduction to the domain
    discovery mechanisms may help readers.

Hello everyone,

The IETF 100 preliminary agenda has us 9:30-12:00 on Wednesday Morning.
That's longer than last time but I think we will have much to discuss.

If you have any drafts or topics you would like to discuss, please let the chairs know.

As a reminder, the draft cutoff is on 2017-10-30.

Thanks,
David Schinazi

Reviewer: Joel Jaeggli
Review result: Has Nits

I reviewed this draft draft-ietf-dnssd-hybrid-07 on behalf of the operations
and management area directorate.

While the security considerations do address the problem of information
leakage from publishing information in DNS zones that may be resolvable from
outside the administrative zone that they are intended to be used in, I think
the reverse zone and in particular the IPv4 reverse zone are particularly
subject to this problem. if the nameservers serving the reverse zone are those
to which the public ipv4 prefix is delegated then is is possible to walk the
zone, trolling for hosts that may not otherwise be easy to identify (because
you do not know apriori what services they might be advertising). This might
identify particular hosts, but it also might be used to identify subnets in
which dynamic allocation occur or where hosts come and go. I think it would be
desirable to provide explanatory texts on the potential dangers of exposing the
reverse zones in particular.

Hi everyone

I've been meaning to post some comments on
draft-sctl-service-registration-00 for a while; finally got around to
writing this down. These are partly based on differences between what
the draft specifies and my implementation[1].

Since the draft is in somewhat of an early stage, I did not think it
made sense to do detailed section-by-section commenting. So instead,
here follows some general comments for discussion, in no particular
order:

- It is not clear how to find the server to register with: Section 2
refers to RFC2136 and RFC3007 for the DNS Update mechanism, and to
RFC6763 Section 11 for information on how to discover the zones to
attempt registration in. So from my best reading of this, the client
should discover the relevant zones, then just send its signed updates
to any authoritative server for those zones. However, this prevents
implementing the registration logic as a proxy (as I'm currently
doing). So I feel like there should be a SRV lookup in there
somewhere? I seem to recall Stuart telling me that this is indeed
specified somewhere, but my google fu is failing me right now, and in
any case it's not clear from the draft how this process is supposed to
  work.

- Different expiry times for different records: Section 5 mentions that
the server should keep the SIG(0) public key for much longer than the
other records, but does not specify how that is to be accomplished.
If the server just picks a cache time for the key, that effectively
prevents the client from specifying how long it has this key
available; think a client with no permanent storage which generates a
key at startup and keeps it in memory, but wants to make sure it is
not cached for longer than the other records so it can reclaim it if
  it needs to reboot.

I currently implement a per-record lease time by overloading the TTL
of the DNS Update packet coming from the client: The TTL in the update
packet has the same meaning as the lease time in the current version
of the draft (except it's per-record), and the server will install the
actual records into DNS with a different TTL. I'm not sure that is a
better way to do it, though.

- Address-based ACLs: Obviously, in most cases a client should only be
able to perform registration if it is actually on the right network.
Firewalling off the ports from outside the relevant networks is a way
to ensure this, but it is somewhat of a crude tool. For one, it
prevents a single registration server / proxy from serving multiple
networks. For another, it prevents a use case where a client is only
allowed *initial* registration (when the key is first cached) from
inside the network, but is allowed to subsequently update the same
record from anywhere. This is useful to, for instance, have my laptop
maintain my-laptop.myhome.example.org even when visiting another
  network.

So another way to ensure this source verification is needed, I think.
The way I implemented it is to have the registration server only speak
TCP; that way, source address spoofing is not possible (as that would
make the handshake fail), and the server can simply implement a
  straight-forward ACL policy.

- It is not quite clear to me whether the sleep proxy described in
section 4 is an optional feature or if its meant to be mandatory.
Stuart explained its usefulness for devices that power off when not in
use, requiring this function will mean that registration servers will
need to be on the local link, which is somewhat limiting. Also, the
implementation complexity goes way up (I certainly don't plan to
implement this feature :)). So I think having a way for the server to
signal "no, I can't perform sleep proxying" to the client would be
good to allow things to fail in a graceful way.

-Toke

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Extensions for Scalable DNS Service Discovery WG of the IETF.

        Title : DNS Push Notifications
        Authors : Tom Pusateri
                          Stuart Cheshire
	Filename : draft-ietf-dnssd-push-13.txt
	Pages : 41
	Date : 2017-10-30

Abstract:
The Domain Name System (DNS) was designed to return matching records
efficiently for queries for data that is relatively static. When
those records change frequently, DNS is still efficient at returning
the updated results when polled, as long as the polling rate is not
too high. But there exists no mechanism for a client to be
asynchronously notified when these changes occur. This document
defines a mechanism for a client to be notified of such changes to
DNS records, called DNS Push Notifications.

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-dnssd-push/

There are also htmlized versions available at:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-dnssd-push-13

A diff from the previous version is available at:
https://www.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=draft-ietf-dnssd-push-13

Please note that it may take a couple of minutes from the time of submission
until the htmlized version and diff are available at tools.ietf.org.
