Hello;

Are there any plans to have any meetings of this effort, formal or
informal, in Dallas ? Maybe
a bar bof would be in order.

                                  Regards

Marshall,

I owe an explanation of this.

I lacked a commitment from chair candidates when it came time
to propose the BOF as a WG. The list got very quiet during the between-IETF
period when I tried to do some work on the Mark's IPR fix
and our chair volunteers of the time were awfully quiet too.

I didn't push quite enough on this, and the question I had was
what this quiet meant. At least, not quite launch energy from
the floor...

However, I've talked with Magnus about next steps: would people like
to contact him/me volunteering to chair? Are people ready to work?
There does not have to be another BOF, though an informal bar BOF is
fine (the note-well will apply). We do need people to plan on
working.

Allison

Allison, Marshall,

This seems like a good idea. For my part I am ready to commit time to
getting the work done.

Is there a need/mechanism for advertising this "Bar BOF" more widely ?

Regards,

Mark

Well, I cannot speak for Allison, but what
I would suggest is

- settle on a time (this is the only evening I have free, BTW)
- settle on a Rendezvous Point (hotel foyer generally works well); we
could taxi
to a good meeting point or stay in the hotel
- send emails to RMT and the IETF list, and I would suggest
arch-d (architecture-discuss@ietf.org) as well. If course, this list
will be in the loop too.

Regards
Marshall

Marshall,

You originally suggested Monday as the only time you could make it, but

Marshall,

Tuesday really needs to be ruled out as a conflict with the
birthday party social.

I probably missed some sense of this thread, but you switched
to Tuesday from Monday because you can only make it Tuesday? If so,
we can make it quite late - a real bar BOF - 11 PM on one of the
other days.

Very, very good catch. Yes, I meant Monday. I intend to go to IETF at
20 Tuesday.

So, once more with feeling :

Meeting time : 8:00 PM Monday (At this hour, this implies a dinner BOF)
Meeting Location : TBD, but suggestions are welcomed.
Meeting RP : TBD, but provisionally the Hotel lobby.
RSVP : tme@multicasttech.com (I would like to gauge possible
transportation and dining options)

(I intend to be at shim6 at 7:50.)

Marshall

No, sorry, it was just a mistake on my part. I had written the wrong
date down.
I originally suggested Monday, and still want Monday.

I apologize for the confusion.

I'm still looking for suggestions for somewhere to go. (To eat, that
is.)

The main agenda is, wither FecFrame ? I think that this idea has
merit and should be pursued. Are
enough people interested and willing to do something about it to
warrant the move to a WG ?

See you in Dallas.

Dear Allison et al;

I am going to send this to IETF, RMT and ARCH-D tomorrow. Let me know
if the wording needs any changes.

Marshall

-------

Subject : Informal FecFrame BOF.

I asked why this FecFrame was not meeting at the Dallas IETF, and
whether it would become a Working Group,
and was told that the BOF had apparently run out of steam recently.

So, we are going to have an informal dinner BOF the Monday of the
IETF Week.

The main agenda is, wither FecFrame ? I think that this idea has
merit and should be pursued. Are
enough people interested and willing to do something about it to
warrant the move to a WG ?

Meeting time : 8:00 PM Monday, March 20th.
Meeting Location : TBD, but suggestions are welcomed.
Meeting Rendezvous Point : TBD, but provisionally the Hotel lobby.
RSVP : tme@multicasttech.com (I would like to gauge possible
transportation and dining options, and I will keep you apprised of
details as they become available.)

Note that Allison Mankin points out that as this is an IETF related
meeting the "NOTE WELL" will apply.

Regards
Marshall

Hi,

I will participate in this Informal BOF.

I will also apologize for not being more forward as an intended chair.
However I think this is work that TSV should do and I do hope that we
will be able to charter this as a WG. I do know that RTP could benefit
from a transport level support by high performance FEC codes. But to do
that I will need to know that there still is interest in this topic.

Hopes for a fruitful meeting in Dallas

Hello;

Apologies if you receive duplicate posts.

I asked why FecFrame was not meeting at the Dallas IETF, and
whether it would become a Working Group,
and was told that the BOF had recently lost a chair, and
that for this and other reasons the meeting did not make the agenda.

I think that this idea has merit and should be pursued, and
volunteered to put together an informal meeting. It seems that Monday
night is the best night for this, so
we are going to have an informal dinner BOF the Monday of the
IETF Week.

The main agenda is, wither FecFrame ? Are enough people interested
and willing to do something about this BOF to warrant the move to a
WG ? Of course, people who are interested and who would like to learn
more are also welcome.

Meeting time : 8:00 PM Monday, March 20th.
Meeting Location : TBD, but suggestions are welcomed.
Meeting Rendezvous Point : TBD, but provisionally the Hotel lobby.
RSVP : tme@multicasttech.com (I would like to gauge possible
transportation and dining options, and I will keep people who respond
apprised of
details as they become available.)

Note that Allison Mankin points out that as this is an IETF related
meeting, the "NOTE WELL" will apply.

For the curious, here are the proceedings from Vancouver :

http://www3.ietf.org/proceedings/05nov/fecframe.html

Feel free to distribute this invitation to others who might be
interested.

Regards
Marshall Eubanks

I would assume that this applies to FecFrame as well, and certainly =20
should be discussed Monday night.

Hello;

After a discussion with Eddie, the hotel concierge, I have made
reservations at the "Cosmic Cafe,"
which is an Indian Restaurant fairly close (5 minute drive) from here.

The address is 2912 Oakland Ave

I will try and find mapquest directions.

Marshall

Hi,

Below is an updated charter and milestone proposal that I will use in
the forming process.

FEC Framework (FECFrame)

Chairs: Greg Shepherd (gjshep@gmail.com)
         Marshall Eubanks (tme@multicasttech.com)

Transport Area Director(s):
         Magnus Westerlund (magnus.westerlund@ericsson.com)
	Lars Eggert (lars.eggert@netlab.nec.de)

Transport Area Advisor:
         Magnus Westerlund (magnus.westerlund@ericsson.com)

Charter for FECFrame Working Group

The object of this group is to develop specifications for using forward
error correction (FEC) codes with applications in the Internet to
provide protection against packet loss. The group will develop a
protocol framework for application of FEC codes to arbitrary packet
flows over unreliable transport protocols over both IP multicast and
unicast. The application of the FEC codec on an aggregate of multiple
packet flows may be investigated and considered to be included in the
solution. The FECFrame working group will build on the FEC Building
Block developed by the RMT working group. The FEC Building Block was
developed there to ensure that the RMT framework developed can support
multiple FEC codes and maintain independence between FEC codes and
protocols based on the framework.

A primary objective of this framework is to support FEC for streaming
media. Other potential usages of the framework may be brought to the
working group for consideration during the development of the
requirements, to enable future support of those usages. The group will
coordinate closely with the AVT and MMUSIC working groups to ensure that
the streaming use-case is fully specified both in terms of interactions
with RTP/RTCP and application layer signalling. The group will also
coordinate with the DCCP working group, at least to consider that
transport protocol's role in streaming media. The interactions of the
framework with existing and used security mechanisms must also be
considered.

The group will work with the RMT working group to ensure that the FEC
Building Block defined in RMT supports both the RMT use-cases (object
delivery over multicast) and the more general FEC protection of
flow(s) over unreliable unicast and multicast transport.

Specification of hybrid schemes involving both retransmission and
forward error correction is out of scope of the group.

MILESTONES:

Nov 06 - Working Group consensus on requirements and their
prioritization for the FEC protocol framework
Mar 07 - Completed selection of solution to develop and mature
Nov 07 - FEC Streaming Framework submitted as Proposed Standard
Mar 08 - Submit supporting specifications such as usage
considerations, signalling interactions and requirements for
          publication.
