There's nothing ID-Template-specific about the script (https://github.com/m=
artinthomson/i-d-template/blob/master/archive_repo.py) -- you could theoret=
ically download the script directly and point it to any repo, whether you'r=
e an owner or not. It only requires a GitHub token with read access to the=
 repo in question.

If a WG didn't do the CI setup, though I would strongly encourage them to d=
o so, the Secretariat could use the tool directly to generate an archive an=
d store it somewhere.

So in order to do a backup if the WG uses your CI tooling to save data in t=
he repo, then anyone can clone the repo and it's all set. If they don't us=
e this, then the secretariat will need to be an owner to use other tooling =
to do a backup.

The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'Working Group GitHub Administration'
  (draft-ietf-git-github-wg-configuration-07.txt) as Informational RFC

This document is the product of the GitHub Integration and Tooling Working
Group.

The IESG contact persons are Barry Leiba and Alissa Cooper.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-git-github-wg-configuration/

Technical Summary

The use of GitHub in IETF working group processes is increasing.
This document describes possible uses and conventions for working
groups that are considering starting to use GitHub. It does not
mandate any processes, and does not require changes to the processes
used by current and future working groups not using GitHub.
It also proposes extensions to the IETF Datatracker that might help the
IETF community better implement the proposed policies.

Working Group Summary

Some working group participants expressed concern over who might implement
the mechanisms or policies described in this document. Beyond that, there were
no controversial points raised.

Document Quality

This document is short, simple, and well written. It derives from existing
github usage in several working groups, and is, therefore, based on solid ground.
Other working groups are very likely to implement the suggestions herein.

Personnel

Christopher A. Wood is the Document Shepherd. Barry Leiba is the responsible Area Director.

RFC Editor Note

Please remove the second paragraph of the Abstract (the one that says what
mailing list discussion is on) before publication.

Hi folks,

With both draft-ietf-git-github-wg-configuration and draft-ietf-git-using-github in the RFC editor queue, it's time the WG consider whether we should close or re-charter for additional work. If anyone has work items from our charter they'd like brought to the WG, we (chairs) ask that you raise them now.

Thanks,
Chris, on behalf of the chairs

We might need to revise the documents again some time in future, but we don't need a live working group for that.

The list has value for discussing these topics, so we should keep that.

I think we can declare victory and thank those who made it happen.

We still have the HTTP/2 spec open. We do get occasional queries, thoug=
h less than 1 per year.

I don't think that there is any obligation to do anything, but I would s=
ay that archival is a good choice for something like ACME if the support=
 requests are becoming a burden.

As to whether we need to say anything, let's put that in the repo for v2=
.

I was looking at
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-git-using-github-06#section-4.1.1,
and thought that I remembered someone from one of the larger IETF github
communities saying that they had relied heavily on labels, but had found
that Github projects were a better way to organize work than labels.

Does anyone else remember someone expressing that opinion?

Best,

Spencer

I've said as much. In QUIC we've found that for some things, a project board has been better. I don't quite know how to classify that, but perhaps that is something like "labels are for everyone, project board is for insiders". The location of an issue on the project board is not very visible, but it is useful for tracking state that only insiders need to have.

It's also possible to use both in combination -- there are automations that=
can move an issue around the project board based on its labels. (And poss=
ibly also relabel it if it's moved on the project board?)

I've said as much. In QUIC we've found that for some things, a project boa=
rd has been better. I don't quite know how to classify that, but perhaps t=
hat is something like "labels are for everyone, project board is for inside=
rs". The location of an issue on the project board is not very visible, bu=
t it is useful for tracking state that only insiders need to have.

Thanks for the clues. I'm thinking the largest repository I'm responsible
for is an order of magnitude smaller than QUIC (based on issue numbers and
PR numbers), so I think I can stick with labels for now, while people are
still gathering experience with projects and the combination with labels.

Best,
