Mark,

In a large distributed (perhaps object oriented) immersive environment, perhaps
hundreds of different mcast addresses would be used. The organization and usage of
these streams would change dynamically, as the application scenario would dictate.
I can see why these should be managed by some underlying middleware layer.
However, I would have thought that MAASs would have to be "well known" and perhaps
even registered with the NIC. This does not strike me as the same kind of service
where an application might request a block of mcast addresses (for some duration),
use, manage and deprecate them.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Multicast-Address Allocation Working Group
of the IETF.

This document defines a protocol, Multicast Address Dynamic Client
Allocation Protocol (MADCAP), that allows hosts to request multicast
addresses from multicast address allocation servers.

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in

Here's a late suggestion for a new name:

Protocol for Obtaining Multicast Addresses (POMA)

pronounced po-ma. Puts the P at the front of the acronym, for a change.

I just submitted a strawman Malloc MIB internet-draft.

It is currently accessible off the malloc web site at:
http://north.east.isi.edu/malloc/draft-ietf-malloc-malloc-mib-00.txt

Comments appreciated... but only if you've already read
the latest MADCAP draft first :)

I have posted a new version of the MADCAP spec to
http://north.east.isi.edu/malloc/draft-ietf-malloc-madcap-03.txt and sent a
copy to the Internet Drafts editor. This version reflects comments received
on the last version. Appendix B of the document includes a summary of the
changes made in this version (which I have listed below).

Since the working group seems to be approaching consensus on this document,
I would like to call for a two week Working Group Last Call. Please read
this document and provide comments to the malloc list or to the document
authors. At the end of this Last Call period, the document will be revised
as necessary and, if rough consensus has been achieved, sent to the IESG
with a request that it be approved for publication as a Proposed Standard.

If you have been putting off reading this document, NOW is the time!

Thanks,

Steve Hanna

P.S. As I said in my message yesterday, I'm going on vacation for a week.
I'll be
back 1/25/99 and won't be checking email until then. This time I mean it!

   CHANGES FROM draft-ietf-malloc-mdhcp-02.txt

   Removed randomization from retransmission.

   Added client identifier type.

Changed section 2.2.1 so that in response to an INFORM with the
option request list option, a scope list need only be returned
if the scope list option was specifically requested.

Added Maximum Start Time and Minimum Lease Time options.

Changed address types to use IANA-registered address family numbers.

Changed IPv6 support to use SCOP 3 instead of SCOP 5 for default
   MADCAP Server Multicast Address.

Added back Unicast Address Allocation example.

   Various clarifications and corrections.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Multicast-Address Allocation Working Group
of the IETF.

Title : Multicast Address Allocation MIB
	Author(s)	: D. Thaler
	Filename	: draft-ietf-malloc-malloc-mib-00.txt
	Pages : 20
	Date : 18-Jan-99

This memo defines an experimental portion of the Management Information
Base (MIB) for use with network management protocols in the Internet
community. In particular, it describes managed objects used for
managing multicast address allocation. Other MIBs may be defined for
specific allocation protocols.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-malloc-malloc-mib-00.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-malloc-malloc-mib-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-malloc-malloc-mib-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

I have returned from my vacation to find NO comments on the latest MADCAP draft, which has been in Working Group Last Call for a little more than a
week. I know that we are all busy people, but...

PLEASE review this document and send an email to me or to the list with any
comments. If you think it looks fine, please say so. This will be helpful in
judging rough consensus. I can't hear you out there nodding your heads silently.

Anybody involved with multicast address allocation (or multicast in general)
should review this specification now. Implementations are under way and will
soon be shipping in volume, so this is the time to request changes.

Thanks,

Steve Hanna
