Hi all,

I submitted a new version of the packet selection draft . Main changes
are the recommendation of the BOB function if a hash-based selection is
chosen and the definition of Input bytes for a hash-based selection of
IPv4 and IPv6 packets.

Regards,
Tanja

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Packet Sampling Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Sampling and Filtering Techniques for IP Packet Selection
	Author(s)	: T. Zseby, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-psamp-sample-tech-07.txt
	Pages : 39
	Date : 2005-7-7

This document describes Sampling and Filtering techniques for IP
packet selection. It provides a categorization of schemes and
defines what parameters are needed to describe the most common
selection schemes. Furthermore it shows how techniques can be
combined to build more elaborate packet Selectors. The document
provides the basis for the definition of information models for
configuring selection techniques in Measurement Processes and
for reporting the technique in use to a Collector.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-psamp-sample-tech-07.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Dear all,

A new version of the draft is available.=20

Abstract:
The IETF IP Performance Metrics (IPPM) working group has standardized
metrics for measuring end-to-end performance between 2 points. This memo
defines 2 sets of metrics to extend these end-to-end ones. It defines
spatial metrics for measuring the performance of segments along a path
and metrics for measuring the performance of a group of users in
multiparty communications.

Best Regards

Hi,

Due to a change in jobs, and an increase in the amount of time
that WG Chairs with lots of documents need to spend, I need
to reduce the number of WGs that I chair or co-chair.
Therefore, I have decided to step down as co-Chair of the PSAMP WG.

I think the PSAMP Framework, Sampling, and MIB documents are in
great shape and the authors and WG did an excellent job on them. I'm
confident the rest of the documents will be just as good when they
are done. I'm sure Juergen, Benoit, and others who are deeply
involved in both IPFIX and PSAMP efforts will make sure implementations
will be able to support both technologies with minimal overlap effort,
which (IMO) makes them worth the wait.

I will still follow the WG mailing list and try to attend the meetings
(this time
via jabber though).

Hi,

A New Internet-Draft is available:
 http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-stephan-isp-templates-00.txt=20

Abstract:
=09
Flows and packets observations require several levels of
aggregations. Currently switchs and routers analyse flows and export
flow information using Netflow. Aggregators are starting to use
Netflow or IPFIX to collect basic information and to export
   aggregated information.

In this context, this memo presents potential interoperability issues
and proposes to standardize a set of templates to facilitate the
exchange of flows and measurements information between ISP.

Regards
Emile

Andy, Working Group,

I would like to thank Andy for his contributions to IETF, and in
particular the psamp & ipfix efforts. It has been a pleasure to work
with Andy and I am glad that he will stay involved.

It will probably not come as a surprise that Andy already informed
Juergen, me and Bert in advance. We discussed whether we would need a
new co-chair. Since the psamp work is already quite far along, we
decided that we would not need a new cochair.

Please let us know if you have concerns about this decision,
otherwise, I hope to see you all in Paris.

Thanks,

David & Bert

Dear all,

I requested a slot for a PSAMP meeting in Paris, but I have doubts
that we have sufficient discussion items for the meeting.

I am very happy, that we completed the work on Sampling and Filtering
Techniques for IP Packet Selection. I will forward this I-D to our
area directors and the IESG in the next days. With this step we
completed most of the work that we could do independently of IPFIX.

Also the IPFIX WG achieved a major milestone. All WG documents
are complete and will be forwarded to area directors and IESG next week.
Based on these documents we can now start specifying the PSAMP protocol
as an application/extension of the IPFIX protocol and the PSAMP info model
as an extension of the IPFIX info model.
Both documents will probably be much shorter than the corresponding
IPFIX documents, but still they require a significant amount of work.

Finally, the PSAMP MIB, which is already in a very mature state,
needs to be adapted to the protocol and the info model.

In conclusion I see work ahead, and certainly also discussions on the
protocol and info model, but there are no documents available, that
could serve as basis for a discussion in Paris.

If you still feel, we should have the meeting in Paris, then please
reply until the deadline for Internet draft submissions on Monday, July 18.
If no one comes up with a good reason for having the meeting I will
cancel it.

Thanks,

    Juergen

Juergen,

I see three outstanding issues on the framework and sampling drafts.
Items 1 and 2 below can probably be resolved offline, although 3 could
benefit from discussion at the ietf.

1. There are some minor harmonization and updates done between the
framework and the recent version of the sampling draft.=20

2. The status of intellectual property (if any) for the Bob hash
function needs to be clarified.=20

3. On the sampling draft: although there has been some work behind the
scenes on this, there are still some uncertainties about input for the
IPv6 hash. It could be useful to talk about this, and try to get some
input from ietf attendees with domain knowledge.

Hi all

I review the draft-ietf-psamp-framework-10.txt. I suggest that the
drafts should be modified content of ipv6. There are two suggestions in
ipv6 about this draft.

1: in section 5.2 " (i) the IP header (excluding options in IPv4,
stacked headers in IPv6) "
I think that field match operation should include extension headers of
ipv6. Extension headers are very important part in ipv6. Network manager
could get lots of information from extension headers. For example, it
could sample by the fragment information in whole flow. And it could
analysed if there has action of attack? (fragment information could be
get from basic header in ipv4). The other face, it's easy to implement
field match by extension headers. Because the TCP/UDP headers are behind
the other extension header. TCP/UDP port is the basic rule of acl. So
TCP/UDP header is often been arrived by next header field. it could know
what kind of extension header including in packet when visit TCP/UDP
header. So whatever router and switch could discover which extension
header been include in packet easy.

2:in section 5.2 "Router Stare Filtering" there are eight conditions. I
suggest two more conditions as follow:
(i)no arp/ND found for the packet in Ethernet interface
		(ii)forwarding to ipv6 over ipv4 tunneling by ipv6
routing table, for example 6to4/Configured/Automatic tunneling

Best regards
Hongfei Chen

Dear all,

Nick submitted three issues that could be discussion items at the
PSAMP session in Paris.

Nick, thank you for this and please find comments inline below.

However, I came to the conclusion that neither of the three issues
listed below does justify having a PSAMP session in Paris.
Therefore I cancel the session.

As said in my previous message, I do expect that we will have a PSAMP
session at the next IETF meeting. Work on the PSAMP protocol and
information model can start right now and I am optimistic that we will
have our final discussion on them at the meeting in Vancouver.

Thanks,

    Juergen

It is very unlikely, that we get the drafts back from IESG review without any
request for minor changes. And even if not, there will be time to fix minor
editorial and harmonization issues after the IESG review.

Can someone please list the items that need to be harmonized?

This issues has be cleared.
The Bob hash function does not make use of protected IPR.

First, this issue should be brought to the mailing list.

I think it should be solved by consulting experts directly.
It is not a good approach to schedule a meeting that can only be successful
if by chance some experts with special expertise (that is not directly related
to PSAMP) will show up.

Hi David,

The PSAMP WG has finished work on draft-ietf-psamp-framework-10
titled 'A Framework for Packet Selection and Reporting'. I request
its publication as informational RFC.

Below please find the write-up for this I-D. The I-D was already
completed in January but I wanted to wait for the second PSAMP draft
(draft-ietf-psamp-sample-tech-07) in order to now submit both drafts
at the same time to the IESG.

Thanks,

    Juergen

Document Title: A Framework for Packet Selection and Reporting
Document reference: draft-ietf-psamp-framework-10

1.a) Have the chairs personally reviewed this version of the Internet
Draft (ID), and in particular, do they believe this ID is ready
to forward to the IESG for publication?

Yes.

1.b) Has the document had adequate review from both key WG members
and key non-WG members? Do you have any concerns about the
depth or breadth of the reviews that have been performed?

An adequate review by key WG members was performed.
I do not have concerns about depth and breadth of the reviews.

1.c) Do you have concerns that the document needs more review from a
particular (broader) perspective (e.g., security, operational
complexity, someone familiar with AAA, etc.)?

No.

1.d) Do you have any specific concerns/issues with this document that
you believe the ADs and/or IESG should be aware of? For
example, perhaps you are uncomfortable with certain parts of the
document, or have concerns whether there really is a need for
it. In any event, if your issues have been discussed in the WG
and the WG has indicated it that it still wishes to advance the
document, detail those concerns in the write-up.

I do not have such concerns.

1.e) How solid is the WG consensus behind this document? Does it
represent the strong concurrence of a few individuals, with
others being silent, or does the WG as a whole understand and
        agree with it?

There is a solid WG consensus on the content of the draft.
However, it was discussed whether this document should become an
informational RFC or a standards track RFC.

1.f) Has anyone threatened an appeal or otherwise indicated extreme
discontent? If so, please summarise the areas of conflict in
separate email to the Responsible Area Director.

No.

1.g) Have the chairs verified that the document adheres to all of the
        ID nits? (see http://www.ietf.org/ID-Checklist.html).

Yes, but the check was done in January when the document was submitted.
Since then ID nits changed. The document needs minor changes for
reflecting these changes.

1.h) Is the document split into normative and informative references?
Are there normative references to IDs, where the IDs are not
also ready for advancement or are otherwise in an unclear state?
(note here that the RFC editor will not publish an RFC with
normative references to IDs, it will delay publication until all
such IDs are also ready for publication as RFCs.)

The references are split into normative and informative.
The normative references include IPFIX and PSAMP WG drafts.
The dependence to the IPFIX drafts is necessary since the IPFIX
protocol was chosen as basis for the PSAMP protocol. The PSAMP WG
documents reference each other. This implies that all of them will
be published at once when the last one is ready.

1.i) For Standards Track and BCP documents, the IESG approval
announcement includes a write-up section with the following
        sections:

It is neither a Standards Track nor a BCP document.
But anyway, here is the write-up.

Technical Summary

The document specifies a framework for the PSAMP (Packet
SAMPling) protocol. The functions of this protocol are to select
packets from a stream according to a set of standardized
selectors, to form a stream of reports on the selected packets,
and to export the reports to a collector. This framework details
the components of this architecture, then describes some generic
requirements, motivated by the dual aims of ubiquitous deployment
and utility of the reports for applications. Detailed
requirements for selection, reporting and exporting are
described, along with configuration requirements of the PSAMP
functions.

Working Group Summary

This document was a regular WG document. There is strong consensus
in the working group that this framework is an appropriate solution.

Protocol Quality

The document was thoroughly reviewed by the PSAMP WG.
