Hello,

I have been selected as the Routing Directorate reviewer for this draft.
The Routing Directorate seeks to review all routing or routing-related
drafts as they pass through IETF last call and IESG review, and sometimes
on special request (in this case, WG last call). The purpose of the review
is to provide assistance to the Routing ADs. For more information about the
Routing Directorate, please see
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/area/rtg/trac/wiki/RtgDir

Although these comments are primarily for the use of the Routing ADs, it
would be helpful if you could consider them along with any other WG Last
Call comments that you receive, and strive to resolve them through
discussion or by updating the draft.

Document: draft-ietf-idr-bgp-ls-flex-algo-05.txt
Reviewer: Andy Malis
Review Date: Nov. 16, 2020
WG LC End Date: Nov. 23, 2020
Intended Status: Standards Track

Summary:

I have some minor concerns about this document that I think should be
resolved before publication.

Overall, the draft is straightforward and easy to follow. In particular, I
appreciated the summary of draft-ietf-lsr-flex-algo as a part of the
introduction.

Once the comments below have been addressed, it should be ready to be
forwarded to the IESG for approval.

Major Issues:

No major issues found.

Minor Issues:

While at least one early implementation has been publicly disclosed, an
early IANA allocation is required for the Flex Algorithm Exclude SRLG TLV
so that early implementations can interoperate.

It would also be helpful for the reader if Section 5 (IANA Considerations)
contained the URL reference to the IANA "BGP-LS Node Descriptor, Link
Descriptor, Prefix Descriptor, and Attribute TLVs" registry at
https://www.iana.org/assignments/bgp-ls-parameters/bgp-ls-parameters.xhtml#node-descriptor-link-descriptor-prefix-descriptor-attribute-tlv
.

Nits:

idnits ran clean except for two out-of-date references.

There are some English language nits with the text, such as "distribute
manner" should be "distributed manner", "This definition provisioned"
should be "This definition is provisioned", "constraint based" should be
"constraint-based", "Flexible Algorithm is called so as it allows" should
be "Flexible Algorithm is so called as it allows", "The operations" should
be "The operation", and so on (and this is just on pages 1-3). I recommend
a language cleanup pass on the draft before forwarding it to the IESG.

Cheers,
Andy

There's a bit more information, I think.

The disclosure appears to cover five patents, but all of them seem to be =
fairly old. A quick scan shows that all of the patents had an inventor =
common with the author list of the draft.=20

We need to thank Ketan for triggering this IPR disclosure, and find out =
what happened. Mistakes do happen, and we shouldn't judge until we know =
the details.

Best,
Adrian

The disclosure has been triggered by RTGWG preparing WGLC.
This is the 2nd try, during the 1st IPR call we (chairs) haven=E2=80=99t rec=
eived all responses required.

Thanks to Clarence and Ketan working with Cisco lawyers to publish it rather=
 quickly.

Regards,
Jeff

Reviewer: Ben Niven-Jenkins
Review result: Has Issues

 Hello,

I have been selected as the Routing Directorate reviewer for this draft. The
Routing Directorate seeks to review all routing or routing-related drafts as
they pass through IETF last call and IESG review, and sometimes on special
request. The purpose of the review is to provide assistance to the Routing ADs.
For more information about the Routing Directorate, please see
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/area/rtg/trac/wiki/RtgDir

Although these comments are primarily for the use of the Routing ADs, it would
be helpful if you could consider them along with any other IETF Last Call
comments that you receive, and strive to resolve them through discussion or by
updating the draft.

Document: draft-ietf-idr-eag-distribution-13.txt
Reviewer: Ben Niven-Jenkins
Review Date: 24 November 2020
Intended Status: Proposed Standard

Summary: I have some minor concerns about this document that I think should be
resolved before publication.

Comments: The document is of high quality and easy to read.

Major Issues: No major issues found.

Minor Issues:
1) Section 2, 2nd bullet point states “the TLV must be considered malformed.” I
think the must in this instance is really an RFC2119 MUST, please correct this.

2) Section 2, last paragraph states “The existing AG TLV 108 and the EAG TLV
defined in this document MAY be advertised together.” However the existing AG
TLV is 1088 not 108, please correct this.

Nits:
1) Section 2, 2nd bullet point: s/The length value must MUST be multiple of
4./The length value MUST be a multiple of 4./

2) Section 2, 3rd bullet point: s/that are enable/that are enabled/

Thanks
Ben

Dan:

Hi!

Sorry for the long delay in replying. This draft has now moved into my
queue and I am in process of reviewing =E2=80=94 part of that is checking t=
he
mailing list, so I hadn=E2=80=99t seen your comment before. :-(

Yes, I tend to personally agree with you with regards to the use/abuse that
BGP faces.

Because the IETF works =E2=80=9Cfrom the bottom up=E2=80=9D, it is up to th=
e participants
to define alternative mechanisms as a general transport, or to take other
measures to protect BGP. In the specific case of BGP SPF, I am explicitly
raising the question to the authors/WG about isolation of the BGP SPF
sessions. Similar steps are being taken for BGP-LS (in rfc7752bis).

BTW, I also agree with your other comments pointing at a more complete
specification. My review should be done in a few days.

Thank you for the review!

Alvaro.

draft. For quite a long time now, the IETF has been in the mode of
extending BGP to carry ever more diverse forms of data, some of which are,
at best, tenuously connected to routing. BGP is being used as an ad hoc
distributed general-purpose database because of its flexibility, deployment
scale, and implementation maturity. In many ways this is a testament to the
robustness of BGP's design and the ingenuity of engineers faced with an
ever-growing list of requirements to share more and more data. The fact
remains, though, that BGP was not designed to be a general-purpose
distributed database. With every new BGP extension RFC that adds a few more
AFI/SAFIs and TLVs and a new set of processing rules, this becomes more
painfully obvious. At some point (preferably 20 years ago) we need to look
beyond the tactical level and produce or adopt a solution designed to
address the root problem and fit to last for the next 50 years. There's a
strategic hole of monumental proportions here.
