OK. As warm-up comedian before co-chairs come here, I want to make
an entirely silly joke prize.

So, at last meeting in Dallas we keep my Japanese hundred and three years
old grand mother's rule, "In US, you have to start your presentation with very
simple stupid joke." remember?

I did 5 questions and let people raise their hands.

1. Who has been taught "what multicast is" in the lecture?
2. Who experienced video-conference by multicast (or alternatives, OM,
ALM, XCAST)?
3. Who did from your research lab in univ./office?
4. Who did from your home?
5. Who believe that your partner can establish a multicast based
world-wide conference call using existing technologies?

For question 1, almost attendant raised. For 4, one third. For 5, no one.

Then I give you a homework again for Montreal, all.

"What would be the most incredible thing when SAM would achieve their goal
and your family finally enjoy world-wide video-con from your home very easily?"

I accept previously and will check attendant names from the blue sheet to chase
his/her to the end of IETF venue to have their comments.

For one people who would give me the most beautiful answer, I will hand small
souvenir from Japan.

See you!

We are working on arranging the first official
meeting of the RG at IETF-66. Typically these
meetings are scheduled later in the week, probably
on Friday. We will announce the schedule once
it is provided by the IETF secretariat.

Here is a preliminary agenda:

- Comparitive survey of existing ALM & OM systems
We have done some work on this and expect to
contribute an ID by Montreal meeting, and
    would welcome participation by others.

- General requirements for SAM

- GIG requirements for SAM

- Workplan
what should be the IDs and RFCs we
produce in the next 18-24 months?
how should we divide the work?
how should we promote participation in the RG?
what liaisons in IETF and outside do we need?
   etc.

- Open discussion

Please comment and expand on this agenda.
Please indicate which areas you are particularly
interested in working on.

Also, we have a new website www.samrg.org
It would be nice to have a bibliography related to
our work on this site, plus links to related activities
such as XCAST, ALM/OM research systems, etc.
In particular it would be useful to have a GIG
reading list.

Thanks.
John

Welcome to the SAM (Scalable Adaptive Multicast) RG
of the IRTF!

The web sites describing this activity are:
   www.irtf.org/samrg
   www.samrg.org

Many individuals participated in the discussions
and planning for launching this RG. Draft charters
for RGs on XCAST and Small Group Multicast were
earlier vintages. On behalf of the RG, we would
like to acknowledge those who advised us along
the way, including: Aaron Falk, Lixia Zhang,
Bobby Bhattacharjee, Scott Bradner, Allison
Mankin, Henning Schulzrinne, Mark Pullen, and
Colin Perkins. Thank you for helping shape
a research agenda which we hope will have a big
impact.

We would also like to recognize the efforts
of the XCAST community in initiating much of the
discussion and planning that led to this point,
including Yuji Imai, Rick Bovie, Eiichi Muramoto,
Chih-Chang Hsu, Jiwoong Lee and Ali Boudani.
Please see the XCAST site for more details
about XCAST:

Hi, all.

I'm very happy to kick off the SAM activities with you.

It's depends on network environment but can we XCAST6 the meeting? (No
special preparation like extra microphones nor projectors are needed.)

Hello all.

We just submitted a draft.

I posted it after the cut-off date. So I also put it below.
http://www.xcast.jp/~muramoto/draft-irtf-sam-muramoto-generic-require-00.txt
Although it is not polished enough,
we hope it would help our discussion in the next IETF meeting.

Regards,

Hi, all:
We are interested in this topic as well and glad to the draft on "
requirements for SAM framework". The motivation behind this draft is
great because the requirements and problems statements seem to the
instructions of the research work.

Nevertheless, I have some comments on it.

1. In this draft, "problems space" is mentioned, however, the exact
problem statements are missing. It might be better to illustrate the
existing problems at the beginning.

2. Generally, to my opinion, it is better to state the reason why the
requirement is important to the SAM framework, at least the advantage of
considering the requirement. However, it is hard to find above
statements in this draft.

In the following contents, some suggestions:

3. In section 3.2, the contents might be not quite in accordance with
the title since it mainly talks about the underlying infrastructure
support. Or maybe I make a misunderstanding?

4. 3.3.4 might be better to say "dynamic management of group membership"
instead of "dynamics of group membership" as a requirement.

5. Another requirement might also be important "efficiency of data
distribution/transmission". As we known, application level multicast is
much less efficient as the network layer multicast.

6. There are several grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
for example,
3.3.1 at the beginning "*Mulitcast* distribution..." should be
"Multicast ...";
3.3.2 "..forwarding *function* (...) are ..." should be "...functions
(..) are...";
"in such situation, .." should be "in such a situation".

It might be better to revise the whole expression?

Best Regards

Jun

Hallo, all:

An initial Internet-Draft is now available from the on-line Internet-drafts
directories:

Title : DMMP: Dynamic Mesh-based Overlay Multicast Protocol
	Author(s)	: J. Lei, et al.
	Filename	: draft-lei-samrg-dmmp-00.txt
	Pages : 26
	Date : 2006-6-21

This document describes a Dynamic Mesh-based overlay Multicast
Protocol (DMMP) to support multicast data delivery applications
without relying on classic IP multicast, including multicast group
management, overlay hierarchy establishment, multicast tree
construction and data forwarding scheme from the source to a number
of receivers. The DMMP framework builds on control plane functions
which dynamically manage an overlay core and a multicast tree layer.
The key idea is a small number of selected end hosts self-organizing
into an overlay mesh, and dynamically maintaining such a mesh. Based
on the constructed mesh, some core-based clusters are built with
capacity-aware trees inside. Then, a multicast tree consists of
DMMP-aware end hosts (and/or specific routers) is built on the top of
the overlay core for efficient delivery of the multicast data.

Hi, all.

I am happy there are active people here. BTW, how many people will be
next IETF in Montreal. If they not so small but not so many group, I
want to see and have lunch or dinners other than the on-agenda meeting
on Tuesday. I think we have to many thing to discuss in a 2 and half
hours meeting.

I will touch down at 19:10 on Monday 10th July and jump early morning
on Thursday 13th.

 Are there any other?

Hi, Lei

Thank you for reading the "rushing" draft.

I think your comments are right.
( we should state problem space and importantance of requirement, if possible )

Forunately (or unfortunately) the draft returned back to me because of insufficient copyright statement.(I wrote "2005".)

>It might be better to revise the whole expression?
Yes. I think the document is only for our discussion not for formal one.
After 1st meeting in the next IETF, it should be revised.
So I did not add something nor fix the document itself.
I just fixed typo and re-submited it.

Regards,
Eiichi Muramoto.

Hi Guys,

It seems that the title of section 3.3 in your draft should
be something like "Number of Groups"
since that's what seems to be discussed in that section.
Not group size.

Also, here are some words I put together for a requirements
discussion a little while back

- should be scalable in that it should be able to support a very
large number of multicast groups (since the network will need
to support very large numbers of groups for VoIP conference
calls, for videoconferences, e-meetings and other applications).

- should be able to rapidly adapt to changes in network topology --
even if there is a large number of multicast groups, even if group
membership is highly dynamic and even if lots of group members
are moving. To state this requirement in a more quantifiable way,
multicast routing should converge for 95% of the affected groups
within 1 second, say, after convergence of unicast routing (to
minimize outages of VoIP conference, e-meetings etc.)

- Multicast packets should follow "close to optimal" routes from a source
to a destination. To state this in a more quantifiable and measurable
   way, the end-to-end delay from a source, s, to a destination, d, in a
multicast transmission should be no more than 50 msec (say) longer
than the end-to-end delay of a unicast transmission from s to d.
(Need to have good end-to-end delay to support full-duplex, real-time
   VoIP communications.)

- Multicast should not artificially concentrate traffic on certain
nodes or certain links (think rendez-vous points) since this can
introduce unnecessary queueing delays and unnecessary packet loss
in addition to unnecessarily long network paths and unnecessarily
   large end-to-end latencies.

Rick

Hello all.

We just submitted a draft.

I posted it after the cut-off date. So I also put it below.
http://www.xcast.jp/~muramoto/draft-irtf-sam-muramoto-generic-require-00.txt

Although it is not polished enough,
we hope it would help our discussion in the next IETF meeting.

Regards,
Eiichi Muramoto, Yuji Imai, Nobuo Kawaguchi / WIDE project

UG-san,
1) we are working on making sure all materials are available
   in advance of the meeting
2) provided we have a volunteer scribe at the meeting,
there should be Jabber participation available
3) please post to mailing list when it is ready

Thanks,
John

Hi, all.

  I have three items.

 1) It is prefferable for us, non English-natives, having informative
material
previously. Now we could not have one for GIG. Will we?

 2) For same reason, it will be good that note taker put the words on Jabber
     conf server. Will we?

 3) About XCAST6, we preparing version up. I'd like to have just 5 minutes
before work plan discussion. I will also send I-D style document.
(Sorry to be late posting. It's because of discussing with the legal
divesion with the company I belong to.)
