IWAN 2002 Poster Session – Call for Posters

(Apologies if you receive duplicates of this message)

This year, the IWAN 2002 conference will sponsor a session aimed at showcasing interesting "work-in-progress" of persons attending the conference. The goal of the poster session is to present current research and provide an opportunity for informal discussion of the work with the authors at the conference venue. Topics of interest are the same as the research topics in the IWAN 2002 conference Call for Papers. Information about IWAN 2002 may be found at http://www.iwan2002.org

Poster proposals should be emailed to iwan2002@iwan2002.org no later than November 4, 2002, 17:00 CET. This is a final date; no extensions will be granted.

Posters will be reviewed by the IWAN 2002 TPC Co-Chairs; the authors of accepted posters will be notified by November 11 and the final version of an abstract and the poster will be due on November 18. At the conference, posters must be presented by one of the authors. Authors of accepted papers must not submit a poster of the work they present in the conference.

The complete call for posters may be found on http://www.iwan2002.org/iwan_call_posters.html; detailed instructions for the preparation of accepted posters are available under http://www.iwan2002.org/iwan_instructions_posters.html.

Hi all,
I have a question about retransmition timers.
The question is does each segment that is transmitted need a separate
timer.

The reason I ask this is what if the RTT changes between segments ie a
burst of congestion which bumps up the RTT. Should the timers beyond the
oldest segment (the timer that is closest to going off) be adjusted to the
current RTT , technically speaking, or should they stay with the old
retransmition timers.

I think the adjusting timers may help avoid unnecessary retransmitions but
could delay traversing into the retransmition state, causing a slow
retransmition response. On the other hand it may create quicker
retransmitions if a packet is lost once coming off a heavily traffic
period when the old RTT was very high.

So the implementation of this would mean that you only have one timer and
a queued sequence of sent segments with time stamps. Once the first
segment in the queue is acked the timer is cleared, the RTT calculated,
then the current rtt is used to calculate the time and set the next
retransmition timer. The time calculation would be along the lines of
(current RTT) - (the time since the segment was transmitted).

I do not know what the implications of this approach would be, can anyone
postulate the implications?

Ps: RTT meaning Round trip time ( I'm sure you all know that ).

cheers,
An inquisitive developer.

In the words of Mark Allman [1],

RFC 2988

Your proposal is only a minor change from 2988, where the
timer is set to expire after RTO + now. Note that in the
absence of SACK, the sender has no information about whether
the packet after the one that timed out was received, so it
would be premature to retransmit it without leving time for
the ack-of-retransmit.

Dear Sir,

May I indulge your trust and confidence as I
introduce myself as well as intimating you of this
business proposal. I am Mr Abdelhadi Benzaghou the
Algeria OPEC Governor (Organization of Petroleum
 Exporting countries).
Through the sale of our allocated oil quota in OPEC,
I was able to make US$42.2million, which is
currently deposited in a European Security and
 Finance company.

Because of my status, and my position also as a
civil servant, I cannot claim this fund directly as
the code of conduct bureau in Algeria forbids me to
acquire such amount of money, this therefore informs
my decision to ask for your assistance to claim
this money on my behalf with your due commissions.
On your confirmed interest, I will first require us
to familiarize ourselves possibly through the
telephone, after which I shall process and make
available all the claim documents to you with which
you shall travel to Europe to personally make the
due claim to the fund on my behalf. The documents of
fund deposit will be changed to reflect you as the
new beneficiary so that you will be eligible to
collect the fund on my behalf.

On the successful completion, I shall travel to meet
you for utilization of the fund. I will give you 20%
of the fund for this assistance.

I am aware of the international monitoring of all
large-scale financial movements after the September
11th terrorist attack on America and to avoid any
state of financial investigation I will provide a
classified clearance paper from the relevant body
which will exonerate the money from either drug,
money laundered or terrorist related proceeds.

Kindly respond to my offer through email
as I am most times on official assignments outside
 Algeria.

I want to assure you that there is no risk involved
in this transaction owing to my exalted personality.
Meanwhile, I shall expect that you provide me with
your personal telephone and fax numbers on your
 acceptance for familiarization and further
 information.

 Expecting your response.

  Best regards,

 Mr Abdelhadi Benzaghou

Dear friend,

I will like to solicit your help in a business preposition, which is by nature very confidential and a Top Secret.

I know that a transaction of this magnitude will make any one worried and apprehensive but I am assuring you not to worry, as all will be well at the end of this endeavor.

I am Mr. Abdul Dagogo and I am the General Manager of the African Development Bank PLC and I and my partners have decided to seek your help in transfer of a huge sum of money requiring maximum confidence .

THE PROPOSITION

A foreigner, Late Engineer Mark Otagaki who was an oil merchant and contractor with the Federal Government of Nigeria until his death onboard the ill fated Kenyan Airways bus {A310300}was our customer at the AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK and had a balance of US$32 .2million which the bank now expects his next of kin to claim as the beneficiary. We have made valuable efforts to get his people to no avail as he had no known relatives, due to this development our management and our board of directors are making arrangements for the funds to be declared unclaimed and subsequently paid into the federal government purse and to avert this negative development me and my colleagues have decided to look for a reputable person to act as the next of kin to late Mr. Otagaki so that the funds will be released and paid into your account and this is where you come in.

All documents to aid your claim will be provided by me and my colleagues and for your help you will be getting a percentage of the total sum .

Please be assured that this transaction is risk free and we will need your fax number and phone number for more communication and my phone number is 234-80-33232630.

Please reply soon.

Mr Abdul Dagogo

ATTN: DIRECTOR/C.E.O

Courtesy of business opportunity, I take liberty anchored on strong desire to solicit for your assistance on this mutual beneficiary and risk free transaction with you, which I hope you give urgent attention. To be precise, I am Mr Benson Douglas the manager of bills/exchange at the foreign remittance department of ABSA Bank. In my department, we discovered an abandoned sum of US$ 26.5 Million (Twenty Six Million Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) in an account that belongs to one of our customers who died along with his entire family in 1988 Lockerbie Pan American Airline plane crash. Since we got information about his death, we have been expecting his next of kin to come over and claim his money because we cannot release it unless somebody applied for it as next of kin or relation to the deceased as indicated in our banking procedures, but unfortunately to no avail and nobody has come forward to claim the money.

Therefore, upon this discovery that I and other two officials in my department now decide to establish a cordial business relationship with you, hence my contacting you. We want you to purportedly present our good self as the next of kin or relation of the deceased so that we can release the fund (money) into your account for safety and subsequent disbursement since nobody is coming for it and again we do not want the money to go into the government account as unclaimed bill.
The banking law and procedures herein stipulates that any accounts abandoned or dormant for a period of some years is subject to be closed and all money contained therein will be forfeited to the government treasury account.

Now it is being speculated that the above sum will be transferred into government treasury account as unclaimed fund on or before December 2002. The reason for you to present your good self as the next of kin is occasioned by the fact that the deceased customer was a foreigner. Mode of Sharing After the successful completion of the transfer is as follows, for the role you will be expected to play in the whole exercise, we have agreed to give you twenty (20%) of the total sum, and 10% has been set aside for the
expenses we are going to encounter by both parties in the process of this transaction and the remaining 70% shall be for my colleagues and I. In support
of the aforementioned, you are urged to reply this letter indicating your readiness and interest to participate in the business. After your reply,
you will be advised on the next step afterwards. I quite believe thatyou will protect our interest by keeping this business top secret and confidential.
Your interest will be equally protected, as we must maintain maximum confidentiality.
Trust to hear from you on the above
TEL NO.OR THROUGH MY PRIVATE EMAIL ADDRESS count on your earliest reply.
Thanks
Yours faithfully.

MR. Benson Douglas

SCOPE

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are fast emerging as a new sensing
paradigm based on the collaborative effort of large number of sensors
deployed close to or inside the phenomenon to be observed, and have the
potential of providing diverse services to numerous applications. The
realization of WSNs require intensive technical research efforts
especially in power aware scalable wireless ad hoc communications
protocols due to their unusual application requirements and unique
constraints such as
- WSNs are generally composed of large number of nodes that have limited
  computational and storage capacity.
- In many applications, sensor nodes are expected to be randomly scattered
  in unreachable regions.
- The lifetime of a sensor network is generally limited to the battery
  lifetime of sensor nodes.

SNPA 2003 is intended to provide a forum for researchers to present their
contributions as technical papers related to communication protocols for
WSNs, data management, access, aggregation and fusion techniques, and
sensor network applications. The papers solicited in SNPA 2003 cover a
variety of topics including but not limited to:

- Communication protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks at all layers
- Novel sensor network applications and services
- Self organizing and scalable sensor network architectures
- Software platforms and tools for sensor network application development
- Energy efficient medium access control, error control, and traffic
  management protocols
- Energy efficient system services such as localization and time
  synchronization
- Robust distributed algorithms for collaborative processing
- Mechanisms, protocols and algorithms for authenticated, secure
  communication
- Application specific network and system services, including data-centric
routing, attribute based addressing and location management
- Data querying and dissemination
- Data compression, association, aggregation and fusion

OVERVIEW

Various wireless technologies and systems have been developed over the
years, and all signs are indicating that many more are yet to come. For
instance, traditional cellular systems have successfully provided voice
services since the first analog system was introduced several decades ago.
Satellite systems have also been used extensively in various military and
commercial applications. Recently, with the growth of the mobile Internet,
and the use of wireless technology in our daily life, wireless LANs, ad hoc
networks, Bluetooth, home RF networks, and sensor networks are attracting
more and more attention from both industrial and academic researchers.

The mushrooming of these heterogeneous wireless technologies calls for the
ubiquitous and integrated wireless infrastructures to make the communication
system robust and efficient. While the existing wireless networks have been
extensively studied individually, the integrated wireless system brings new
challenges in system management, protocol design, performance evaluation,
QoS support, etc.

With this special issue we aim at bringing together state-of-the-art
contributions in this emerging area of integrated heterogeneous wireless
technologies that range from papers that report novel research to papers
that describe commercial and industrial experiences. We are seeking for
papers that are original, unpublished, and not currently under review by
other conference, workshop, or journal. Topics of interest include, but are
not limited to the following, with particular emphasis on the integration of
heterogeneous wireless technologies:

·System architecture
·Interoperation between wired, terrestrial wireless and satellite networks
·Hybrid cellular systems, wireless LANs, ad hoc/sensor networks, Bluetooth
·Location, Mobility and Handoff Management
·System modeling and performance evaluation
·Security and Privacy
·Applications
·Protocol design, analysis, and optimization
·Routing (including multicasting and broadcasting)&Energy efficient,
self-organizing and resilient protocols&Medium access control protocols &
TCP/IP over integrated wireless networks
·Congestion, admission, and flow control
·Quality of service in the hybrid networks
·Implementation and testbed experiments

From: MUYI IGE
Dear Sir,
I am Muyiwa Ige, the second surviving son of the late Justice Bola
Ige.
We hereby acknowledge the receipt of your mail to my mother with
thanks, May God reward you greatly for your decision to assist us in
this mutually beneficial transaction;
It is important that I deal with you directly at this crucial Stage
in this issue rather than the family lawyer.
As my mother has rightly informed you, we are seriously in distress
as all our saved money abroad totaling over US$700M has been
confiscated by the Nigerian Government as part of the probe into the
Nigeria Electric Power Authority (N.EP.A.), headed by my Father as a
Sole Administrator, a few months before he was assassinated on
Wednesday, 26th December, 2001 by unknown gunmen in our Family home.

If you have been following my family's profile in the news lately,
you would have read about the assassination.
I wish to inform you that my mother reached you based on the fact
that she would really want us to establish a relationship based on
mutual trust and understanding.
So many people have disappointed us home and abroad, even people who
benefited from my father, have all bitten the finger that once fed
them, that is why we had to throw caution to the wind and trust you a
stranger who we had never met all our lives.
Dear Friend, as much as we recognize that a lot of wonders happen
these days,
you do not have to doubt the authenticity of my mothers mail to you,
because we are really oppressed, and we need the assistance of a God
fearing person and a good natured man to help us clear our funds from
a security company, and bank it up for us while we make arrangements
to travel and join you up as soon as the shipment is effected.
For security purposes, I shall be coordinating the Business
transaction as my mother is currently in distress and we cannot
afford to Lose this only remaining $40,300,000:00/m of all that my
father left for us. At the moment, the funds are in a security
company and were deposited as Photographic materials in some luggage.
As soon as we are sure that we can trust you, we shall go ahead to
send you the Certificate of deposit and the luggage numbers and
security code numbers.
For the purpose of security and confidentiality, I would require that
You and I proceed with this business with telephone and fax
communication, as I would not want to discuss this transaction on The
Internet for security reasons.
So I would suggest that we conduct this business through telephone
and fax communication, while my mother will be reaching you via
e-mail as security agents bug her telephone line often.
As, as soon as I hear from, I shall furnish you with the whole
details of how to Finalize the transaction and other information you
might require or other things you might need to know and also you
should be rest assured that this transaction is 100% risk free and
success guaranteed.
There are documents backing the legitimacy of this transaction that
will convince your bank or any other bank that might doubt the
authenticity of these funds.
Also I will send you more information and other information you might
require via fax immediately I hear from you on telephone.
I look forward to your urgent response, as my mother and the rest of
my immediate family genuinely need your help.
Truly Yours,

MUYI IGE

ATTN: GENERAL MANAGER

Dear Sir,

I amDR. WILLIAMS BELLO chairman- audit committee, with
the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), I
headed the audit committee whose assignment was to
audit, review and recommend payment for all contracts
awarded in the NNPC by the corrupt past military
administration.
In the course of our review, we discovered that the
sum of USD 30 million (THIRTY MILLION DOLLARS) was
floating unclaimed in the corporation account without
beneficiary. This money emanated from an
over-invoicing in the contract awarded to a foreign
firm for the supply, fixing, erecting and computerized
optimization of oil pipeline to one of our oil
refineries during the past Military administration.
Base on our status as senior government officials in
top sensitive position of trust, we cannot stand to
claim this money ourselves, hence, I decided to
contact you. All modalities for this transfer have
been fully worked out. We have already secured a
preliminary order to effect this payment, we now
require from you your BANKING PARTICULARS, FAX AND
TELEPHONE NUMBER for smooth transfer of this money
into your bank account. We intend to share the money
in the following manner: 30% for you, 65% for us and
5% for any miscellaneous expenses. This business is
100% risk-free. We look forward to a fruitful business
relationship with you.
Best Regards

DR. WILLIAMS BELLO

Folks-

I understand that the spam problem on some of the IETF-ish lists
hosted at NASA GRC is getting fairly bad. (I siphon off all the
chud before I have to look at it, so it has not bothered me too
much.) So, somewhat relunctantly, I have closed the tcpimpl list off
to posts from non-subscribers. As I understand things, anything
from someone who is not subscribed should bounce to me for approval.
I will endeavor to handle such requests quickly. Since the list is
for a dormant WG and the traffic is pretty low volume (yet, bursty)
I imagine this will not cause a huge problem for people. But, drop
me a note offline if you have issues.

Hello,

Does anybody know what units srtt in struct tcp_opt in
<include/net/sock.h> is measured in ? Is it ms, s or jiffies ?

I assume you are talking about Linux? On linux the unit is jiffies.

SCOPE

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are fast emerging as a new sensing
paradigm based on the collaborative effort of large number of sensors
deployed close to or inside the phenomenon to be observed, and have the
potential of providing diverse services to numerous applications. The
realization of WSNs require intensive technical research efforts
especially in power aware scalable wireless ad hoc communications
protocols due to their unusual application requirements and unique
constraints such as
- - WSNs are generally composed of large number of nodes that have limited
  computational and storage capacity.
- - In many applications, sensor nodes are expected to be randomly scattered
  in unreachable regions.
- - The lifetime of a sensor network is generally limited to the battery
  lifetime of sensor nodes.

- - Communication protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks at all layers
- - Novel sensor network applications and services
- - Self organizing and scalable sensor network architectures
- - Software platforms and tools for sensor network application development
- - Energy efficient medium access control, error control, and traffic
  management protocols
- - Energy efficient system services such as localization and time
  synchronization
- - Robust distributed algorithms for collaborative processing
- - Mechanisms, protocols and algorithms for authenticated, secure
  communication
- - Application specific network and system services, including data-centric
routing, attribute based addressing and location management
- - Data querying and dissemination
- - Data compression, association, aggregation and fusion

Is there any particular reason why TCP out of order packet handling
always drops data from the incoming
segment when it overlaps with the previous segment in the sequence space
and drops overlapping data from the already queued segments which are
succeeding in the sequence space? What consequences are
likely if (say ) one always drops overlapping data only from the
incoming segment?

I have a question regarding the code fragment below. It belongs to
tcp_output function of many BSD versions. In this fragment, the
function check for a window shrinking.

if (len < 0) {
		/*
		 * If FIN has been sent but not acked,
		 * but we haven't been called to retransmit,
		 * len will be < 0. Otherwise, window shrank
		 * after we sent into it. If window shrank to 0,
		 * cancel pending retransmit, pull snd_nxt back
		 * to (closed) window, and set the persist timer
		 * if it isn't already going. If the window didn't
		 * close completely, just wait for an ACK.

“If window shrank to 0, cancel pending retransmit, pull snd_nxt back to
(closed) window, and set the persist timer if it isn't already going.”

So, sender set tp->snd_nxt to tp->snd_una as soon as it enter in
persist mode.

Now consider this scenario:
Sender has sent segment [1] [2] [3] when receiver send back an ack for
segment [2] and zero advertised window. Then, sender set snd_nxt to
snd_una and enter persist mode. In the meantime, if segment [3] reaches
receiver and is processed (receiver buffer could be empty now),
receiver could reopen window with an ack for segment [3]. But this ack
is discarded by sender because snd_nxt < seg_ack.
Even if sender sends probes repeatedly, receiver could respond with the
same ack. So, does connection remain in a stall situation for an
indefinite time?

Tanks in advance,
Pierluigi
