This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, mailman-request@ietf.org) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

Hi, Al,

I've just seen a submission where the form-feeds (if that's what
we all call them) had been stripped out, so it's not nailed yet.
I'm pretty sure the rest of the i-d was ok beyond those characters,
though I didn't do the most complete exam on it.

It was the submission of draft-ietf-nsis-signaling-analysis-05.txt
by Jukka Manner today (20041201).

Subject: Submission of a final version of an I-D

Allison,

Ok we will look at this to see exactly what went on. These problems
are the result of boundary crossing between Linux and Windows. It
looked like the filter would solve the problem but it may be slightly
deeper. We will keep looking.

Al

Rebecca,

Losing the control-L's isn't earth-shattering, but since you guys are
trying to get all the formats sorted out...

Thanks so much for the corrections!

Hi Jordi,

I am not on any of the mailing lists that you sent your email to, so
Barbara forwarded me your email. Anyway I talked to the technical
folks and I have concluded that it is just too risky to accept zip
and tar files, because one virus that might get through the virus
filters could disrupt operations. If that disruption came at a busy
time such as just before a meeting there would be a great many people
unhappy.

Sorry but we need to be careful about such things.

Al

I believe I know what the problem is and it was my fault not the filters
or filtering process. I've already fixed what I was doing and corrected
all of the drafts that were done incorrectly yesterday.

I apologize if I'm repeating suggestions, but I don't see it brought up
on this thread yet: it seems that one mechanism that we could employ to
avoid this kind of mangling is allowing the submission of
RFC2629-formatted IDs in source form. By allowing the actual drafts to
be generated on the IETF side of things, there isn't any transport in
the way to mangle the final output.

Hi Albert,

Sorry, copied this time ;-)

I don't agree actually with your view. Let me explain.

A zip, sit, tar or other compressed formats, are never executable files. You
only can uncompress the file, and then if it contains an exe (for example)
and you actually execute it, then you may start a virus.

At the end the problem becomes a "user" problem, depending on how the user
do the things and has his operating system configured.

Moreover, today all the antivirus are also able to scan compressed files, so
even in the situation of getting one, it will be detected before is
uncompressed by the user.

What you're telling me about a possible disruption could also be created
even by a virus or DoS attack introduced in the system in some other way.
For example the same user that has a miss configured OS uncompress and
executes an attachment received not as an Internet Draft submission, but
just as a regular email from a friend (or pretending to be a friend). What I
mean is that the security level depends on a proper configuration and usage
of the systems, not on rejecting what is useful for the IETFers AND can be
detected even in the case of a malicious attachment.

It may be even easier to attach the system, depending on the mail client and
the OS that you're using, which an email pretending to be html and actually
being executed automatically. Again, is a question of user attitude and OS
configuration.

So, unless you provide me a better rationale (which I'm not able to imagine
right now), my opinion is that this one is a very poor one to be sufficient
to not accept compressed files ;-)

Regards,
Jordi
