Folks,

I usually don't read or post to this list. Please bear with me if this =
is
old news.=20

The "bellheads" of the ITU-T have put together a pretty decent looking
document access mechanism that covers all their Study Group level =
documents
(they also have lower level "Rapporteur's meeting" documents, which are =
not
yet accessible through the system). It's implemented in ASP :-( and
structured around meetings, so it's likely not directly applicable for =
us.
"Decent looking" is also a matter of personal taste. However, I think =
it's
a great tool for them, and some of the ideas would be quite helpful at =
least
for me, if implemented in the IETF as well. Check it out:
http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/meetingdocs/index.asp

Some of the concepts I like and haven't seen in the IETF are
- a very compact representation of the key properties of each file, e.g.
date, authors, title, and group to which this document belongs.
- All working documents (corresponding to I-Ds and WG administrative
documents, i.e. charters, reports, ...) available from one site. In the
IETF case, where we don't charge for the RFCs we produce, they could be
integrated as well
- means to "shop" for documents, select them, and have the whole =
selection
as a zip file shipped to you by email. For our small docs, a tarball =
would
do as well
- autoconverters to PDF etc. For them perhaps more important than for =
us,
as they need to worry about all those different software versions.

This is not a "demand for implementation" or something, it's just a =
pointer
to something useful.

Regards,
Stephan

Hi Stephan,

Some nice ideas here. Adding Authors and also an Abstract to the
WG pages (under http://tools.ietf.org/wg/ ) is something which has crossed
my mind, but is waiting for time. Auto-conversion of txt documents to html
and PDF is already in place, but not fully integrated into the WG pages
yet - I'm working on that. Tarballing is also something which would be
nice, although I'm not sure how important that would be in practice. I
checked if Apache had a capability like that built-in a few months ago, but
when I didn't find anything, I left it. Converting all the WG pages to
static pages, so they could be rsynced has been on my mind for a while,
though.

Of the features available through the ITU-T document access tool, what
are the 2 most valuable which are not currently available through the
WG pages, to your thinking?

Another thing the tools group (which is probably almost a subset of
wgchairs@ietf.org, though) might want to look at, whether by
installing additional words into the common yubnub or maybe even by
running a special ietf yubnub.

Hi, trying http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-stumpf-dns-mtamark
I get http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-stumpf-dns-mtamark with
an option to look at:
                                                     ______
http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-stumpf-dns-mtamark-02.txt-26

What I really wanted was the last available txt or rfcmarkup of
<http://ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-stumpf-dns-mtamark-04>

That gets me a 404 (expired October 31), -05 is the tombstone.
I still have -04 in my "special interest draft collection"...

http://purl.net/xyzzy/home/test/draft-stumpf-dns-mtamark-04.txt

...but actually I intend to remove the public access to this
"I-D collection" when http://tools.ietf.org/id is officially
announced.
                      Bye, Frank

P.S. (joke): I managed to "beat" the URL length for e.g.
<http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-stumpf-dns-mtamark> with
<http://purl.net/net/draft/stumpf-dns-mtamark> by seven
characters before I got the idea that "tools.ietf.org/html/"
already uses the relevant "tools.ietf.org/id/" output... ;-)

Yah. There was a bunch of .txt-NNN documents which messed up
things; remainders of completing the repository some time ago.
I've removed them and things should work as expected now.

Right. I mostly need to put in place an automatic opt-out
feature for authors who doesn't want their old drafts available,
I think.

ACK, but admittedly I don't see how you want to implement
"automatic". It's something authors could decide when they
submit a draft, with a manual feature to change their mind
later (e.g. by submitting an explicit tombstone).

Well, yes - but there's the legacy drafts to handle, which
have been submitted with the expectancy of 6 months lifetime.

The automatic opt-out is for the change-of-mind part:

With the appropriate checks and guards against spam,
the idea is to basically have a button (it'll probably be on
a separate page) which says "I'm the author and I don't want
this old draft of mine available here." I'll parse the draft,
extract the author email, send a cookie to (each of) the author(s)
and if returned from all authors, set a flag to mark the draft
hidden. After that, you'll get some kind of tombstone instead
of the draft. (With an opt-in link for the author(s)).

Of course, I have to provide manual handling, even so... but
it has to be plain and easy for people to take their drafts
out of circulation, not because I expect the workload of actually
doing manual flagging to be heavy, but because people need to
see that the mechanism exist, and even try it out if they have
doubts.

	Henrik

Hi everyone,

I'd like to announce a prototype of a new tool I've been hacking=20
on lately.

http://people.nokia.net/~pasi/dailydose/

We already have good tools that show what's the current status of
various things in IETF; this tools shows the "delta" of that, or
what has changed during the last day. In other words, the script
downloads various IETF data sources daily, runs a diff against
yesterday's data, and displays the changes as an HTML page. And
there's an RSS feed, too, to make this Web 2.0 compliant :-)

The main data source is the "all_id.txt" ID Tracker database dump;
additional data comes from Bill Fenner's excellent tools, and some
others (the web page has a full list). For each document whose
status has changed, the tool throws in the abstract and a couple of
links to various other tools as well (e.g., direct link to Henrik's
diff tool for updated drafts).

In addition to showing what's happening, Jari Arkko suggested the
page should also show what's not happening. So there's an "IESG
Non-Progress" section showing the drafts that have been in the same
state for a long time (based on Bill's data, again). I hope that
making this data visible leads to this section becoming shorter=20
soon :-)

Comments, bug reports, suggestions for improvement, etc. are=20
most welcome!

Disclaimer: This is very much a prototype, and there are bugs.=20
And due to the way the tool works, bug fixes are not retroactive
(some of the older pages have bugs that have already been fixed).

Best regards,
Pasi

While this might fit in the generic problem space you're looking into,
I'm not sure it needs to be solved by the same tool, though...

One thing I've been looking for a long time has been "What has changed
under www.ietf.org or www.iab.org in the last X days and how?"

It's really frustrating to click through (most) pages looking for new
or updated stuff, and for updated stuff, try to figure out how it has
or hasn't changed. It's not uncommon that web pages are reorganized a
bit, new features added, etc. without announcement.

Tracking updates on the web pages would be great ("the list of pages
sorted by the modification date"). Being able to see the diffs in
changed files with respect to earlier version would be fantastic.

If you'd like more specific data tracking suggestions, maybe one could
track for instance:
  - IESG and/or IAB minutes
  - IESG projects list
  - IESG Statements on Accepted Individual Submissions
  - IESG Do Not Publish Requests on Individual Submissions
  - (Dare I say it..) the IPR disclosures page..

Pasi,
Love it!
1st suggestion: Any chance we could select a start and end date period?
2nd: Check blocks to select among info, i.e., IETF-Announce, New
Drafts, etc

Thanks. Great tool.
Ray

Perhaps the IANA pages would benefit from a requirements
document too.

Subject: Problem with IANA MIME media types registry

[CC'd to IETF discussion list and ietf-types discussion list]

Hello,

Recent changes to the page at
http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/index.html
accessed via the link from the IANA Assigned numbers page
http://www.iana.org/numbers.html#M
have rendered the registry of assigned media types useless.
Prior to the recent change, the media types registry listed
the assigned MIME top-level media types, viz. application, audio,
image, message, model, multipart, text, and video. Since the
change, only the application top-level type is listed (audio, image,
message, model, multipart, text, and video have vanished without
a trace) and superfluous repetition of the application subtypes
listed in
http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/application
has appeared (these of course are not top-level media types).

Could you please investigate what has gone awry and regenerate
a page that provides top-level media types.

Absolutely brutal - love it too.

Any plans for an ATOM feed of this?

Thanks for the suggestions, these are really good ideas! At=20
least the IESG/IAB minutes and IPR disclosures look pretty
straightforward to do (simple structured data that's not too
difficult to "screen-scrape" from the web page).

The first one working (well, hopefully :-) is the IPR disclosures=20
list -- and it looks like there are a couple new ones today:

Ray,

Due to the way the tool is implemented, doing arbitary date
comparisons would be quite difficult (there's no database=20
backend or anything, and old data is not kept around longer
than needed).

The second idea might be doable.... Maybe some kind of "preferences"
stored in a cookie would work? The cookie could also remember
what was the latest date you've already seen.

Best regards,
Pasi

Currently, no; I think all feed readers can understand the existing
RSS 2.0 feed (and since I wasn't involved in ATOM WG, the "eating=20
your own dogfood" thing doesn't apply :-)

Somewhere near javascript:toggle('id51') you got an "IPR note"
instead of the "abstract" for "draft-hoffman-rfc-author-guide".

Not really our department, though. I think we should focus
on ietf.org first. The IAB and IASA have ongoing dialogue
with IANA, with real hope of progress since they hired
David Conrad.

Let's not forget that there is nothing in the IETF rules
that says drafts can be withdrawn after publication. All
that is said is that they will be removed from the active
directory after expiry.

Although I think most of the archive operators have accepted
requests to remove drafts at the author's request, I'm not sure
that is anything but politeness. Once a document is public,
it's public. (I don't know the legal position and we may need to
check it at some time, but you generally can't unpublish something,
although a court can order copies to be destroyed.)

So while we probably need an unpublish button, I think it should not
be made too easy.

Don't forget that the ITU-T Secretariat has a large staff and a budget
around ten times the IETF's. So we can certainly pick out good ideas,
but we will have to be selective.

This appears to be organized by SG. So are we; I normally find drafts
and RFCs via http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/wg-dir.html
and http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/OLD/index.html. What's missing
there are links to meeting minutes - would that be a good idea?

If you look at the draft, it's actually a formatting problem in the draft
that confused the extraction of the abstract.

I'm thinking of a tool that knows what steps exist in the process and
has estimates for how long they do or can take (e.g., "IESG Approval -
1 day through 6 weeks"), and then stacks them up to see when an RFC might
pop out. I'm thinking of this for groups that have external dependencies,
e.g., ITU meetings that need an RFC number for a document by X date -
working backwards from a deadline, with average values for each step,
you can see what deadlines there are for earlier steps (such as WG
consensus or IETF Last Call or ...).

Does anyone know of a tool like this?

Thanks,
  Bill

Aren't we dealing with long-tailed distributions here? I suspect that
makes prediction quite hard.

I like the idea. Maybe the prediction could be a probability=20
distribution as well?

Something like "25% of documents go from WGLC to RFC in <=3DX1 months,
50% in <=3DX2 months, 75% in <=3DX3 months"?  This way, the horribly=20
long tail wouldn't skew the figures so much, and you could pick=20
either an optimistic or pessimistic estimate depending on the
document and your mood :-)

Speaking about the long tail....

o draft-ietf-rsvp-proxy has been in AD Evaluation ::=20
Revised ID Needed (jpeterson) for 1082 days
o draft-ietf-megaco-h248v2 has been in Publication Requested ::=20

Hi,

is there any particular reason why the font sizes in the diff tool output
are specified in points?

This means, in particular, that zooming the text in Opera to get it to fit
on my screen won't work....

I think the thing you are looking for closely resembles a project planning
tool.... and I think calibrating it to the 50th percentile would give
interesting feedback; essentially "if you are here in the process and don't
believe in miracles, you must start worrying THIS long before the deadline".

I suspect that the "long tail" is mainly stuff where the proponents have
lost interest; they might either have despaired of ever getting the
document passed or they might have gone on to other pursuits.

One dose of forgetfulness, carefully applied, works wonders for increasing
delays.....

                             Harald

Hmm. Across the browsers and OSes I've tested, points have seemed to give
the best consistency and control, and I've not had the particular problem
you describe. What I've checked include Firefox, IE, Safari and Konqueror
on Windows, Linux and OS-X -- remove the combinations that doesn't exist.

I'll download Opera and check it out, and see if I can understand the problem.

>From a philosophical point of view, with screens varying at least from 72 to
100 ppi today, with further variations probable in the future, I prefer to not
use pixels as a unit; but if on the other hand points simply doesn't work in
some cases, I may have to reconsider.

I tried this out, and zooming seems to work as expected for the side-by-side
diffs on the e.g. http://tools.ietf.org/wg/ccamp/draft-ietf-ccamp-gmpls-te-mib/
on OS-X with Opera 8.5. I'll try this out on Linux and Windows at work,
tomorrow.

Apparently down at the moment. How about adding tools.ietf.org

Yah. I was caught by an apache upgrade that didn't go smoothly.
Down between 05:00 and about 09:00 CET.

Sounds like a good idea. Mike, what's needed? Personally I
run Munin (http://munin.sf.net/) to keep track of my servers
(see e.g. http://www.levkowetz.com/site/stats/munin/levkowetz.com/shiraz.levkowetz.com)

- the ietf noc display seems to be something different. It would
be trivial to add munin feeds from the tools server to the ietf noc,
for what it's worth, but feeds to the current page might also be
easy.

When I look at this with a pre-CSS browser the CSS-magic does
of course not work. Instead of font-family: monospaced for
<td>...</td> cells using <td><tt>...</tt>/td> is an option (?)

I'm not sure about the class="lineno" cells, are they supposed
to contain nothing ?

> FWIW, my favourite unit of measure in theory is the percent

Same here.

> with the next-most-favourite being the "size 1-5" range that

Yes, e.g. <td><small><tt>...</tt></small></td> is valid. Only
<basefont> and <font> for font size changes are dead for good.

Nested <small> and <big> work even with Lynx, not changing the
font size of course, but they (can) have a visible effect.

The *very* long tail is indeed mainly very special cases, and is
mainly a concern because it skews the mean value. So percentiles
are the way to go; we could regard the 50th percentile as a key
indicator for example.

Ok, some preliminary results. In OS-X and Linux (debian) I don't see
this problem with Opera - I do as you say, and the result is about 50%
size text.

In windows, however, I get the expected text reduction of the
proportionally spaced text, while the monospaced text stays exactly
the same when I go to smaller magnifications than 100%. It does
increase for magnifications larger than 100%, though.

This seems to be independent of how the font sizes are specified -
I see the problem with Opera on windows for font size specified in
pt, px, em, and %.

I'll do some browsing this evening, to see if the problem is known,
and if there is some workaround for it.

(Forwarding a bug report in case this interests more people.
I've already sent it to the rfc-editor and ietf-action.)

----

I happened to notice that the IETF RFC directory (ftp://ftp.ietf.org/rfc)
and the RFC Editor's corresponding directory
(ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes)
have subtle differences. These differences look like bugs, and can be
potentially confusing to people who access the information, so I'm hoping
they get sorted out...

Here's what I did: I downloaded the "dir" listings from both locations
(see logi.txt for a log of what I did). I then took the two lists and
converted them to a form suitable for comparisons (see ietfrfclist.txt
and rfcedrfclist.txt). Here are the differences that I found:

1. IETF site has BOTH rfc0NNN and rfcNNN files (same for 00NN and
000N). Its annoying if you attempt to download these files, because
you get multiple copies. But it could also be because you wanted
to offer both, if people have URLs pointing to them. But if so,
the rfc0* list is incomplete. Its missing all .pdfs and .pses, and
start from RFC 101 there are many RFCs that are NOT offered
in the rfc0NNN form. In fact, there are only 549 such RFCs, whereas
in the RFC editor site there are 931 RFCs under < 1000.

2. IETF directory has "~" files that should be removed:
       rfc3411.txt~
       rfc3927.txt~

3. What's this in the IETF directory? Typo?
       rfy707.tex

4. The IETF site is missing .pdf and .ps files for some
RFCs that have them in the RFC Editor site. (And
this does not appear to be because we'd have a
policy against PDF as there are some other .pdf
     files at the IETF site).

5. The RFC Editor site is missing these .ps files that
are on the IETF site. (Or are these the contents of
the rfc1305.tar file? I did not check.)
