Dear tools team,

I still like the ID NiTs tool a lot :-)

A suggestion: I think it would be nice to receive a warning if either
the filename written in the draft or the file that was uploaded contain
upper case characters....

Should a verbose warning be issued if the uploaded file has a different
name to that which was cited as the filename?

I've just had a draft bounced because of this - and recall making the
same mistake on a previous submission.

Hi Gorry,

Something like this will be available in idnits v1.94. The code
I'm currently testing will warn not only for uppercase characters,
but any characters which are not digits, lowercase letters, or dash,
as required by 1id-guidelines.txt.

Some questions:

In the current code, I'm emitting warnings for both disallowed
characters and mis-matching file-name -- any particular reason why
a mis-matching file-name should not result in a warning in non-verbose
mode?

I also don't think it makes sense to warn about non-valid characters
in the filename if it doesn't match the name given in the document -
if somebody prefers to work with "Foo-04.txt" instead of draft-foo-bar-04,
a warning about mismatching filename is enough; warning for non-valid
characters in "Foo-04.txt" doesn't seem to make sense...

Regards,

	Henrik

Hi,

There are a lot of spell-checking programs out there, and for most
uses I'd go with a command-line invocation of ispell or aspell,
which is available not only on *nix but also on windows.

I will however eventually add some spell-checking to the online
version of idnits, and as a first step I've culled an IETF-specific
dictionary from the last 2 years of RFCs, augmented this the surnames
of I-D authors taken from xml2rfc's reference bibliography and finally
added a short manually assembled list of words.

I've also written a web wrapper around aspell, running with this ietf
wordlist, as an early way to so some ID spellchecking:

 	http://tools.ietf.org/tools/idspell/

Testing and comments are welcome.

	Henrik

Seems to work very well! Surprisingly well,
in fact, considering that you don't seem to
be ignoring "hard" words such as abbreviations.

Great stuff, thanks!

P.S. Do we have anything for grammar checking?
("Word" is not an answer I'm looking for.)

Heh :-)

Not yet. There are some possibilities I know of which I'll look
at integrating once I'm satisfied with the spelling part, and have
hooked that into idnits in a nice manner.

Best,

Cool.

Of course it would be great to be able to add words to the dictionary
in real time.

Agreed!

I'd already started thinking about the interface to doing this :-)

While I appreciate the idea of checks to make sure a general document
fits the I-D requirements, spell and grammar checks are NOT I-D
specific; in fact, I-Ds are likely to stress the edges of both.

I don't see putting a full-fledged word processor up as useful; I'd
suggest focusing on I-D specific items, spiffing up the user interface,
or just leaving it alone.

We ought to encourage authors to do their own grammar, spelling, and
other checks themselves.

Joe

I don't agree on spellcheck. An IETF-specific dictionary is very useful.

I *so* do agree. This has been part of my standard draft-producing
pipeline for years, and I at first thought that I'd respond just
that to people asking for tools instead of googling and finding
them, on the wgchairs list a few days ago.

But then I realised that there's one thing which can be provided
here which is not generally available, and that is the ietf-specific
word list which reduces false positives to something manageable.

I see Brian's suggestion in this vein - a possibility for the users
to improve the ietf-specific word list, so there'd be less noise and
greater significance in a report about N potentially misspelled words.

For the same reason, the word-list (generated newly each night) is
available for download separately; there's a link on the 'about' page
which lets you download that for your own use, offline.
(see http://tools.ietf.org/tools/idspell/)

Regards,

	Henrik

Yes, as Biran noted.

I *really* like this service, and encourage its development, but I hate
to see time spent providing features I can get commercially or free
myself. *I-D specific* checks are fantastic; that, IMO should be not
only the focus but I encourage it to be the limit of what this does ;-)

Then I think we agree. I don't want to turn this into a general spell-checking service; people should be able to find dozens of those
using google (... I even think I saw spell checking as a google service
somewhere, but I may misremember...).

I also have more projects I'd like to do than I know how to handle; so
there aren't any idle cycles about to be wasted on overdoing this ;-)

I tried to spellcheck an XML file.
The result seems to be less than useful (blank screen).

Did I hit a bug?

Hi,

I just realized that a draft I'm currently reviewing (draft-ietf-rddp-
mpa-03.txt) has a non-standard boilerplate that idnits-1.96 doesn't
currently detect. Specifically, the authors have included an
additional disclaimer section on the last page, and have placed the
required paragraphs under unusual headings.

Regardless of whether this is OK in this particular case or not, it'd
be great if idnits would throw a warning in such cases that something
may be fishy.

Lars

Hi again,

idnits v1.97 has a first cut at a mechanism for identifying
additional boilerplate-related / copyright-related text, but
I'm not sure how large a percentage of cases of added legalese
it will catch in practice. It does catch the added text in
draft-ietf-rddp-mpa-03.txt.

Feedback on how this works in practice will be appreciated.

Regards,

	Henrik

thanks!

the only fix I'd urgently recommend is one that puts up a message saying
"cant' spellcheck this file" - a blank looks so daunting....

Folks-

It's not clear how one creates an IRTF mailing list at https://
datatracker.ietf.org/public/request_list.cgi other than by making a
special request in the notes field.

Hi,

just came across a small issue with detecting unused references and
draft-ietf-avt-rfc2833bis-13.txt. The output has:

   Experimental warnings:
   - Unused Reference: [17] is defined on line 2035, but not referenced
   - Unused Reference: [16] is defined on line 2031, but not referenced

[16] and [17] are in fact referenced, but in an appendix.

Lars

This draft is not handled correctly, but the bug is that idnits fails
to strip the header lines properly from this draft. Boilerplate
breaking across pages is in itself no problem if the header is
correctly stripped :-)

I've added another header pattern to the header/footer stripping code
to handle the draft you mention, and similar ones. Available in
idnits v1.99 which I'm putting online in a minute.

Hi, Henrik,

The template for RFC2119 boilerplate has a bug; there is an extra space
before "RFC 2119".

Thanks,

John, Jeremy-

What you are asking for is larger than just your RG. I agree it
would be useful to have RG pages in the wiki that are clearly
listed. I think, though, that I will have to talk with the tools
team about this. What you can do now, and that requires no
additional work from Action or the Tools-team is to create a wiki
page for your RG and list it on the IRTF wiki page. Just create
logins for yourselves and you should be able to do both. Let me know
if you have problems.

There may still be an issue:

   * The document seems to lack an RFC 3978 Section 5.1 IPR Disclosure
     Acknowledgement -- however, there's a paragraph with a matching
beginning.
     Boilerplate error?

     RFC 3978 Section 5.1 text:
"By submitting this Internet-Draft, each author represents that any
applicable patent or other IPR claims of which he or she is aware
have been or will be disclosed, and any of which he or she becomes
aware will be disclosed, in accordance with Section 6 of BCP 79."

     ... text found in draft:
"By submitting this Internet-Draft, each author represents that any
applicable patent or other IPR claims of which he or she is aware
have been or will be disclosed, and any of which he or she becomes
aware will be disclosed, in accordance with Section 6 of BCP 79.

Hi Lars,

It looks like the text below points to the wrong position in the template
code, (at the full stop, rather than the space after it) but otherwise I
think it's right about the template not being the regular 3978 template, yes?

Hm. We may have found a discrepancy between the checklist and current
procedure here!

I have been submitting drafts with the "no derivatives" clause for
about two years now (after having an argument with a non-IETF person
who claimed that it was OK to copy parts from one of my IDs into
other documents without asking, because it didn't include that
clause), and the secretariat has always accepted them.

Yes. But...

The ID-Checklist isn't checked by the secretariat, and isn't a
requirement for submitting an ID; it's a checklist for drafts
submitted for publication as RFC.

The document the secretariat goes by is the ID-guidelines
(http://www.ietf.org/ietf/1id-guidelines.html) which has less strict
requirements in some respect, but also has some requirements which aren't=

mentioned in the ID-Checklist.

idnits started out as a tool with the ambition to check section 1.1 and
1.2 of the ID-checklist, but has gradually also acquired more and more
id-guidelines checks, and things like checking unused and undefined
references.

The output is split in two parts, first one handling ID-Checklist
issues, then one handling id-guidelines issues (and recently the
experimental warnings at the end).

Possibly idnits should have switches to control whether it should
check the checklist, the guidelines, and the extra checks. I have
no idea which mode should be the default, since idnits usage seems
to be shifting from the original early adopters, ADs, via chairs
using it before sending a draft up for publication, to now more and
more people using it before submitting even early versions.

(As an aside, the difference between the checklist and the guidelines
are seldom pointed out clearly, and since we don't have one common
archival document series for stuff like this, it's not obvious where
you find these, and who should apply which. I think Harald's ipod
draft is a step in the right direction...)

Regards,

	Henrik
