The use of zero-filled RFC numbers should not be a problem - checking a draft with the same text you have, but inserting a space between ")" and "[" turns out just fine. The follow-on question is of course whether a closing parenthesis immediately preceding the reference is reasonable; my thought is that so is the case, but of others on the list have reservations, let's hear them. If there are no reservations, I'll include this tweak in the next version of idnits. In the second case shown below, you have the word following the reference run into the reference with no intervening space; this usage is not kosher, I think, and I'm going to let idnits continue to be sceptical to it. (The reason why I can't just pick up anything bracketed with "[" and "]" as a reference, but instead have to look at the context, is that 'anything goes' results in far too many false warnings about un-defined (or sometimes un-used) references, due to the use of brackets in formulas, diagrams etc...) Anyone have a handy script that does so over HTTP and only transmits deltas? I've played with this a bit and came up with the scripts attached below. They first try to mirror from tools.ietf.org, which is an order of magnitude faster that the secretariat server, which they fall back to for anything they can't find on the tools server. Whee! But seriously, if watching all these scripts run is like watching paint dry, you might want to try "mirror" and FTP. Yes, I said FTP. See, what's really hurting your download speed is all the round trips to check dates. mirror doesn't have that problem because it parses the directory listing and zooms right along. Yes, the parsing is totally ad hoc and an offense to Diety, Human, and Small Furry Creatures from Alpha Centauri, but hey it works. mirror is what I used before I switched to rsync. Are you sure that you want the new boilerplates even if "2006" is selected ? No new observation, some folks prefer a truncated 2119- boilerplate defining only those keywords actually used later in their text. Or that's what they hope, but it is easy to forget a definition. If most authors use the full 2119 boilerplate please ignore this minor nit, it's not related to changes in the new version. Another point not related to the new version: idnits claims that nntp.uri.arpa is a possible FQDN. Does it make sense to ignore anything.uri.arpa ? If I use a file name not matching the document name idnits 1.124 notes this as error, but then it doesn't mention the offending nntp.uri.arpa anymore, is that as it should be ? Ditto with idnits 2.00. Probably okay: The document intends to obsolete 1738, and idnits states that RFC 1738 is already obsoleted. I'll look into it. > Probably okay: The document intends to obsolete 1738, > and idnits states that RFC 1738 is already obsoleted. 4248 and 4266 both indicate in the header that they obsolete 1738, and the rfc-editor's database also has this information, but looking at the text of 4248 I think that the information is probably incorrect - both 4248 and 4266 seems to update parts of 1738, rather than obsoleting it. I have no idea what the authors/rfc-editor were thinking at the time, but the information used by idnits here is derived from the rfc-editor's data base, so if a correction is needed (which seems to be the case, to me...) that's where it should happen.
