Thanks, while you're at it, I tried to find a working
Wiki to answer Simon's feature requests with "exists",
and for that I had to go to the IESG Wiki, the Tools
Wiki http://www1.tools.ietf.org/wiki is apparently
gone (broken link on the Tools start page).

Yes. It's not only the page, but a whole server which is
gone. I'll be moving stuff over from that wiki when the
server is online again; I'm much happier with the Trac
wiki than with the previous (MoinMoin) wiki used for those
pages.

Strong ACK, Moinmoin assumes that all browsers can
handle inline PNG icons, which isn't true for my
"mozilla 3" dinosaur, and the builtin "broken image"
icon of my browser is horrible.

mirroring Bill's ABNF and xml2rfc validators on the IETF tools
servers ? Or if that already exists, what's the URL ?

Fine by me. I'm horribly swamped right now, but hope to be caught
up by Chicago, and will (if agreeable to Bill) set up mirroring
for this when I work through my backlog.

Works for me (now), www1, www2, www3, and the generic
http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-woodyatt-ald-00.txt

The servers are not always in perfect sync, and in
such cases I'd try www1.tools.ietf.org (or 2 or 3).

No trick. Two of the tools servers has this OK, but the third hasn't,
for some reason. I'm updating that one with your draft; but I still
haven't figured out the reason for the glitch, and have to do so to
avoid future problems.

[Several hours later]

Ok, found the glitch and fixed that too.

Hi,

now that ID-Nits checks references for downrefs, would it make sense to
collect information about non-IETF specs that can be safely referenced
from standards tracks specs?

For instance, it really makes little sense to warn about a reference to
REC-XML, right?

Best regards, Julian

Makes sense to me. I'm already using information from

  http://www3.tools.ietf.org/group/iesg/trac/wiki/DownrefRegistry

in idnits -- this page gives both known non-standard documents which
should not be flagged, and a rationale for when documents should be
added to the list.

If somebody would collect appropriate additional documents for this
list, I'd hope that we could get one of the people with write access
(the IESG members) to add the relevant information there, and I'd
also update idnits to know about the documents in question.

One slightly sticky point is maybe to identify the unique canonical
identifier for non-RFC documents, something that idnits could reliably
recognize -- I'll leave that for people with the appropriate domain
knowledge...

Great. I didn't know (or forgot) about that one.

I guess we should standardize the format for the RCF2629 "seriesInfo"
element. For instance,
<http://xml.resource.org/public/rfc/bibxml4/reference.W3C.REC-xml-20060816.xml>
uses:

  <seriesInfo name="World Wide Web Consortium Recommendation"
value="REC-xml-20060816"/>

which i think is still too verbose;

  <seriesInfo name="World Wide Web Consortium"  value="REC-xml-20060816"/>

or even

  <seriesInfo name="W3C"  value="REC-xml-20060816"/>

should be sufficient (the current format on xml.resource.org duplicates
the "REC" state both in the name and the value field, that's my main gripe).

Best regards, Julian

I think a 'HASH' method should be implemented into HTTP, whereby the server
responds with a hash (md5/sha) of the requested resource. This would be a
godsend for large networks which tend to use caching extensively, because
caching-proxy servers could verify the resource hasn't changed while
creating a minimal amount of traffic, instead of deleting the cache after x
seconds.

I think Bill and I still have write access to that wiki for another
couple of months, but I'd want the IESG to approve (which should
be a no-brainer IMNSHO).

Possibly you could combine a HEAD request with the Hash signature
from this document, which is currently with the IESG for approval:

Possibly you could combine a HEAD request with the Hash signature
from this document, which is currently with the IESG for approval:

In theory, you can already use the Content-MD5 response header for that
(<http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/rfc2616.html#header.content-md5>);
the only problem is that there's no reliable way to request it from a
server.

I just tested all 3 servers, and they seem to be performing fine.

Not sure where the original error lies, but it seems that the
immediate cause of the error you got is that you were feeding
idnits XML rather than text/plain.

>From the snippet in the error message, I suspect that either
xml.resource.org is misbehaving, or you had an error in the
input XML which resulted in non-text output from xml.resource.org...

I'll be checking www3.xml.resource.org with known-good xml files
next.
