I've had a lot of good experiences with the submission
tool from an AD perspective this week (see below).

But I also noticed an issue. I depend on the tools site
for much of my drafts handling, including nits, diffs, etc.
But with the submission tool the pace of activity
can be higher, e.g., drafts can be discussed, revised,
submitted, and approved during a conference call.
Given that the tools server updates the drafts
daily (?) its no longer always the case that the latest
drafts and diffs are available from the tools site. I've
done some manual comparisons because of this, but
I wonder if there'd be a way to make the updates more
frequent, or perhaps driven by the actual updates.

Any ideas?

Right.

It's actually hourly, but I'm rsyncing against the rsync draft
repository, and I think that it still lags behind the http repository;
probably with an hour too. Finally there's the re-generation of the WG
index pages which can be less frequent and not immediately show the
new drafts even if they are available.

Getting the updates driven directly by the new draft availability
seems like the right way to go. An XMPP publish/subscribe mechanism
would be a good generic and scslable solution, but I don't think
Michael is up to putting that in place on very short notice. I think
I'll set up a http notification URL he can GET with the final path
component being the new draft, as a very simple notification mechanism
-- as a stopgap. Then I'll do all the fetching and generation needed
when I get that.

Hi.

I used the new I-D submission web interface to submit two IRTF drafts
yesterday.
draft-irtf-routing-history-06
draft-irtf-routing-reqs-08

Generally the interface worked as expected and looks like a good thing!

However I wanted to check if/how the tool deals with IRTF and IAB drafts...

The drafts were classified as Individual Submissions although they were
draft-irtf...
Is this intentional?
Does the tool send notifications to research group chairs (or the IRSG
if you can't identify the RG involved)?
Will there be the same sort of requirement to authorize
draft-irtf-foo-bar-00 drafts as for wgs?

I haven't had occasion to submit an IAB draft this way yet, but...
How will these be classified?
Will the tool notify the IAB?
Will it ask for authorization for -00 drafts?

Regards,
Elwyn

The document fetch function in the side bar on many tools pages seems
to work only if the word "rfc" is typed in lower case, and there is
no space between "rfc" and the RFC number. It would be nice if the
function was a bit more accepting of alternative inputs.

The document fetch function in the side bar on many tools pages seems
to work only if the word "rfc" is typed in lower case, and there is
no space between "rfc" and the RFC number. It would be nice if the
function was a bit more accepting of alternative inputs.

I have noticed that the page number links in HTML-ized documents on
the tools website don't always work, at least using Safari 2.0.4. It
seems to be a bit of a hit-or-miss affair: they work fine for some
documents, but always jump to the top of the document for others. (I
am running Safari on a Mac, and this is the production version, not
the new Beta version.)

For example, it works on:
      http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-matthews-p2psip-nats-and-
overlays-01
      http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-behave-rfc3489bis-09
      http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4787

but they always jump to the top of the document for:
      http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-p2psip-concepts-00
      http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-bryan-p2psip-requirements-00
      http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-matthews-p2psip-hip-hop-00
      http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-behave-turn-04

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this?

By contrast, section number links always seem to work.

- Philip

The I-D submission tool requirements document (RFC 4228)
says that initial submission of IRTF, IAB, etc. drafts require
approval, but isn't very specific about from whom.

The tool that's been deployed implements more or less the
'Trial Stage' requirements from RFC 4228; if we come up with
the right requirements for IRTF and IAB drafts they could feed
into future development plans.

FYI, I added a bunch of possible mini-projects to the brainstorming

I'm aware of it, but haven't been able to work out why it happens.
If anybody has a clue regarding the why, I should be able to update
the htmlization script to work around this Safari quirk. (Firefox
doesn't exhibit this behaviour as far as I'm aware).

Regards,

	Henrik

Hi,
I'd like to show off a new verification tool that is being implemented =
as a student work at Masaryk University in Brno. Our goal was to create =
a generic syntax verification utility for any syntax definition =
described in any Backus-Naur Form (BNF) dialect. It is based on a =
dynamic parser that is configured at run-time (without recompilation) by =
one or more BNF syntax specifications copy-pasted from RFC's. The parser =
then verifies that input messages conform to this specification.

An alpha version of this tool is already available (LGPL) via =
http://sourceforge.net/projects/bnfparser2. "Alpha" means the tool =
"still awaits full testing of all its functionality and is not feature =
complete". Once it's mature enough, we'd like to offer this tool to be =
listed in the IETF Tool Inventory http://tools.ietf.org.
We intend to use this tool for syntax verification of SIP (Session =
Initiation Protocol) and HTTP messages. However, it can be used for =
syntax verification of any text-based protocol, including syntax =
verification of BNF specifcations.

I'm very interested to hear from you if you have any comments or =
suggestions concerning this tool.

Best regards,
Petr

Subject: [SIP] bnfparser2-0.1.0 released

Hello,
on behalf of all the contributors (see AUTHORS), I'm proudly announcing =
a first alpha release of bnfparser2, the generic BNF-adaptable parser, a =
joint project of http://iti.fi.muni.cz and http://www.anfdata.cz.

Learn more on http://bnfparser2.sourceforge.net.

BNF Parser=B2 0.1.0 can be downloaded from:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D192851&package_id=
=3D226956&release_id=3D546315

What works:
 - the parser is able to read syntax specification in any (defined) =
variant of BNF
 - the parser can parse input words
 - if an syntax error is detected, the error position is returned
 - otherwise, the parser returns a "semantic string"
 - can be used under both Linux/BSD and Microsoft Windows

It's a first alpha version, so please be tolerant! Build instruction for =
Linux/BSD are described in README. The build for Windows can be =
currently done only by advanced users who need no instructions.

TODO:
 - performance optimizations (current performance is not satisfying)
 - better handling of syntactic strings
 - better warnings (non-reachable nonterminals, possible errors in BNF =
specification, localication of undefined non-terminals)
 - error recovery supporting ambiguous grammars

Petr Gotthard

It seems a very good idea but, at this time, the tool is a bit
difficult to install. I did not find binary packages for SimpleOpt and
the Makefile shipped with the sources do not even have a target
"install" so I really wonder where to put these files (I have no C++
experience).

SimpleOpt needs no binaries; copy SimpleOpt.h to /usr/include, that's
enough

>From my POV all lists (excl. RFCI and some Google groups) I care about
have an Archived-At header field inserted by news://news.gmane.org,
e.g. your article...
<http://article.gmane.org/gmane.ietf.tools/742/raw>
...was archived at:
<http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.ietf.tools/742>

That roughly corresponds to Xref: news.gmane.org gmane.ietf.tools:742
or (untested nntp URL) <nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.ietf.tools/742>.

As noted in the Archived-At RFC and the various news-nntp-uri I-Ds
URLs based on Message-IDs are better. For your article here it would
be <news://news.gmane.org/p0624081dc30b8699bf9b@%5B10.20.30.108%5D>
or <http://mid.gmane.org/p0624081dc30b8699bf9b@%5B10.20.30.108%5D>.

In theory mailing lists could predict Message-Id URIs and insert them
in Archived-At header fields. It won't work as expected if GMaNe does
not accept an article because it's spam, or if the article never makes
it from the list to GMaNe for other reasons. And if an article is
posted on more than one list carried by GMaNe the "guessed" URL might
point to a clone of the original article (different lists doing weird
things with the body etc., and sometimes GMaNe is forced to modify
the Message-Id of mutilated X-posts).

Hi again. You already have all the data for this one. It would be
grand if a tool told me a week before my draft was going to expire
that, well, it was going to expire. You could probably just pore
through the drafts database each night looking for "expiration_date
== today + 7" and send mail to all the authors. The message should
say something like "we know you might want to let this draft expire,
and we're not encouraging you to renew it unless you want, but in
case you wanted to keep it alive, here's a chance before it expires".

I've updated this I-D, and posted it with the I-D submission tool.
Two questions about this tool:

1: What's the point of uploading the XML source ? The announce mail
   <http://mid.gmane.org/E1ImrAP-0002vF-VM@stiedprstage1.ietf.org>
   doesn't mention it.

2: The "abstract" in the announce mail contains an "editorial note"
below the real "abstract", is that a feature or a bug ?

 Frank
