Hello Henrik, others,

Many thanks for all your great tools.

I tried to check an I-D with Idnits for a shepherding document.
Unfortunately, the tool doesn't allow me to point to an existing
Internet-Draft; I have to download it and the upload it again
to the tool. Would it be possible for you to allow pointing
to drafts with a simple draft-....-0x.txt or with an URI?

Thanks, Martin.

The same problem is affecting the primary server for
xml.resource.org, but the secondary is up (IPv4 only).

Hi Martin,

You can give idnits an URI like this:

http://tools.ietf.org/idnits?url=http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-ietf-tls-extractor-03.txt

(But yes, it would be useful to have a text box where
you can enter the URI, too)

Best regards,
Pasi

Additionally, if you go to e.g.
  http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-tls-extractor ,
that page has a link to a dynamically generated idnits page for the
draft.

I'll see what I can do.

when I submit a draft shaped with the version 1.33 or 1.34pre tools
in http://xml.resource.org/, the automated submission tool refuses it
because it does include the Dec. 16 template and says to use version
1.34 xml converter.
Thank you for your help.

It seems to me that there is a lot more spam in the archives than
their there used to be. More specifically, we seem to get spam in the
archives that was not sent to the lists. I have not gone and
systematically looked at this so I may be totally wrong but are other
seeing this? Any thoughts on what might have changed?

Thanks, Cullen

I discovered an issue recently when, for no particular reason, I checked
that the diffserv WG archives were still on line. Diffserv, and the list,
were closed in 2003. But until 9 days ago, the email address
diffserv-archive@ietf.org was still active, receiving spam, and
dropping that spam into the archive. This was promptly fixed under
ticket [rt.amsl.com #12411] but I wonder if it's the tip of an iceberg?

Cullen,

This was actually brought to my attention several days ago and we are
working on it now. The spam is being sent to the archive email
address, not the list address. I will provide more details about the
solution as soon as I can, but please know that it is definitely being
addressed.

Alexa

I have a theory that the SPAM is being sent to the archive email
address, not the actual mail list. How hard would it be to make sure
that the mail arriving at the archive is only coming from the mail
list that it is archiving?

The mail is definitely going straight into the archive, bypassing the
distribution to the mail list.

Here is another example:

Nothing has changed, just the frequency of spam is increasing. We are
going to be taking steps to mitigate this shortly.

Errors-To: tools-discuss-bounces@ietf.org I seem to be having a problem with accessing IETF sites with v6 for some
reason. Some other IPv6 Internet sites work for me, and some IETF IPv6
addresses work, but not all. Iljitsch saw a similar issue from Holland,
but from Spain all addresses seemed to work. Anyone else see the same
problem?

It all looks good to me, using the AARNET tunnel broker (i.e.
I appear to be in Australia, not New Zealand, in 2001:388:f000::/64 ).

I can't use our native connectivity via the University of Auckland and
karen.net.nz, because that doesn't have transit to non-EDU type networks,
including the IETF. We have black holes in IPv6, like we used to
have in IPv4 20+ years ago.

Errors-To: tools-discuss-bounces@ietf.org I'm getting 404s for the slides linked at

do seem to be present at http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/08nov/sipping.html.
Am I doing something wrong?

I checked a couple of other working groups, and SIPPING was the only problem
I found.

Thanks,

Spencer

I'm not sure why you're not seeing the minutes - I just checked and I
think they're there, although when you first go to "Minutes" from the
SIPPING Status Page, I did get an error, but that error says that no
IETF-74 minutes are available (which is right). But if you then click
on minutes-73, they are there. Perhaps they've just started resetting
the WG pages to plan for IETF-74.

Subject: Missing slides for IETF 73 SIPPING meeting

I'm getting 404s for the slides linked at
http://tools.ietf.org/wg/sipping/minutes?item=minutes73.html, but the
slides do seem to be present at
http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/08nov/sipping.html.
Am I doing something wrong?

I checked a couple of other working groups, and SIPPING was the only
problem I found.

Thanks,

Spencer

Works fine here.

It seems that the IETF network only supports 1480B PMTU is support.
www.ietf.org servers are advertising 1440 (=1500B MTU) MSS.

I'd suspect there is some big packet blackholing happening on the
return path.

This is working on my 6to4 test system that has 1420 MSS, and my
native systems which have 1440B MSS. So if the problem wasn't fixed
already, I suspect this gets triggered when tunneling happens inside
the network.

It would be interesting to see a traceroute back from www.ietf.org or
such, maybe also with big packets.

It seems the URL for the slides has changed after the secretariat closed the
preliminary materials page. I'll talk to them about it.

Hi,

I have one suggestion for idnits: it could issue some kind of mild
warning if the first two letters in the file are "P" and "K".

Apparently, Internet Explorer gets confused by this, and thinks the
draft is a ZIP file (ignoring the MIME type returned by the web server).
For example:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-pkix-rfc4055-update-01.txt

This is clearly IE's fault (www.ietf.org is returning "Content-Type:
text/plain" as it should), but since this will cause lot of confusion,
it wouldn't hurt to warn about it.

(BTW -- this never happens with xml2rfc, since it always begins
the file with an empty line.)

Best regards,
Pasi

I've been frustrated for a long time about the web archives we
have. To me, they are pretty much unusable for anything other the
browsing the last few days of emails.

But, if you ever wanted to go look for something a month or a year
ago, it's just not possible

For the MHonArc stuff we are using, the only operations seem to be:

- Next page
- Prev Page
- Thread Index

And, each of these gives you one page of messages. No search ability,
etc.

I have found that if I want to go look for something, I effectively
have to download one the mbox format archives and incorporate it into
my MUA. Surely we can do better than that!

Is this an area that is a known problem with a fix in the pipeline?
Or, is a prod needed to look into moving to a better web interface?

Do others thing we need an improvement in this area?

Thomas

Indeed.

I guess the only reason why I haven't been complaining so far is because
the mailing lists of particular importance to me happen to be hosted by
the W3C (WebDAV and HTTP).

Hi,

I got frustrated about that, too, and started a Google custom search a
while back that searches the archives (http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=006728497408158459967%3Aybxjdw-bjjw
).

I'm not totally happy with it and there are bugs, for example, it
doesn't find anything in the IPsec archives even though the correct
search pattern is in place. Google doesn't offer any way to debug any
issues with their custom search, so there's no way to fix this AFAIK.

But anyhow, give it a whirl.

Well, actually, isn't there stock mailing list software out there that
does what we need?

I don't think yet more specialized tools (and an indirection) are what
we want, I think the IETF needs better archives. So my aim here is to
get the IETF archive system improved to meet our needs.

I've thought at times of writing a short "requirements" document for
this, but is that necessary? How do we make progress on this topic?

The only thing I know about are patches to mailman for htdig support.
That would already be a step up, but still a far cry from Google
Groups, Nabble, etc.

I hear you.

Grab some of the available open source indexing solutions and try
them? This might be something someone could look into at the SF code
sprint.
