The mailing list search software used by W3C is open source
(http://www.w3.org/Search/Mail/Devel) -- but I don't know how much
work it would take to adapt it for IETF use.

AMS (the company running the IETF secretariat) also has an in-house
built software called "ARO" (used by some of their other clients),
which includes mailing list archives and search. I've briefly tried
it, and at least the archives and search (it has other features, too)
look pretty decent. (But there's the question of vendor lock-in --
using software that can't be moved to a new vendor complicates ever
doing a new RFP for secretariat services.)

There are also commercial software packages (like L-SOFT's LISTSERV)
that include mailing list archives and search.

I don't know how the cost of those would compare with the cost of
customizing/deploying/maintaining some open source package (we pay for
the IT infrastructure work, so using open source isn't always cheaper
than commercial software).

Best regards,
Pasi

A couple of years ago I couldn't even get to *.ietf.org over IPv6 from
the IETF meeting venue... The /48 PI prefix used then wasn't routed by
the meeting network ISP but they returned unreachables so the fallback
to IPv4 was immediate.

I'm not sure why you're not seeing the minutes - I just checked and I
think they're there, although when you first go to "Minutes" from the
SIPPING Status Page, I did get an error, but that error says that no
IETF-74 minutes are available (which is right). But if you then click
on minutes-73, they are there. Perhaps they've just started resetting
the WG pages to plan for IETF-74.

I'm getting 404s for the slides linked at

slides do seem to be present at

Am I doing something wrong?

I checked a couple of other working groups, and SIPPING was the only
problem I found.

 Hi Spencer,

Yeah - somehow all those links are wrong. For example, the Update PAI
slides on the tools page link is to:
http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/08nov/slides/sipping-5/sld1.htm

Whereas, the link in the proceedings, which is correct, is:
http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/08nov/slides/sipping-5/sipping-5.htm

And, actually, there are other WGs impacted - there is the same problem
with XCON, P2PSIP, BLISS and I would guess others. Based on these WGs,
the difference is that the .htm ones have the problem, but the .pdf are
fine. =20

I'm not sure how or who needs to fix this - i.e., do problems on the
tools page go through the normal ticket system or can I as chair somehow
fix this. I'm not on the tools list, so if someone who knows the
answer can make sure to 'cc' me, I'd appreciate it.

Mary.=20

a) Please fix this; we are losing mail.

b) If this failed for the IPsecME WG, I suspect it might be failing
for other WGs that were created in the past year.

Paul,

I maintain an up-to-date alias list for wg-chairs on @tools.ietf.org,
but you've used an address @ietf.org. I don't even know if that
_should_ work...

If it should work, then there should probably be a wildcard alias
which forwards to the @tools.ietf.org in place on @ietf.org. Failure
for only ipsecme-chairs@ietf.org is strange -- _if it should work_.

Whoops. Good belated point. It probably should not work. I'll let
Alfred know that it's @tools., not @ietf.

Hi.

An aggrieved author contacted me to say that I had left his name out of
a reference to this draft
https://datatracker.ietf.org/drafts/draft-ietf-nsis-qspec/ in a draft I
just submitted (draft-ietf-nsis-ext-00).

Having checked up, it appears that although the draft text clearly has
four authors only three names/email addresses appear on the I-D data
page and the generated bibliographic reference used by xml2rfc also has
only the same three out of four authors.

Any ideas?

I noted that the said aggrieved author only specifies a name and email
address with no organisation or other contact details.

Regards,
Elwyn

PS
Is the system discriminating against retired authors?
Signed,
Another (semi-)retired author.

Hi,

The old Perl scripts that produced the IESG agenda HTML page
(both "public" version at http://www.ietf.org/IESG/agenda.html and
an IESG internal version) have now been replaced by new Django code.

The new pages look the same as the old ones (no few functionality at
this time), but it's now ~200 lines of code (Python+Django template)
vs. >1,000 lines of spaghetti Perl earlier, so it should be easier
to maintain and add new features, if needed.

There are redirects in place, so no action is required -- but
if you notice any bugs or strange behavior, let me know.

Also, if you have tools that "screen scrape" this page, you
may want to check them .

Best regards,
Pasi

This is less useful than the previous one to 'mere mortals' -- the URL
to web ballot in the previous version pointed to the public side of
the datatracker (so you could see ongoing votes, comments, etc.). Now
it points to the IESG internal page that requires authentication.

That was not intentional, and will be fixed ASAP. Thanks for
reporting the bug!

Henrik: I've just committed changeset 1309 to the sprint/73/pasi
branch, with updated templates/iesg/agenda_doc.html and templates/
iesg/agenda_wg.html (and no other changes).

Could you merge those to the 2.00 branch, please?

(Probably we should wait for couple of days before shipping the
release, if there are other bugs.)

Best regards,
Pasi

Hi,

this is usually due to errors in the metadata database maintained by
the secretariat, and you should email them. The XML reference
descriptions for xml2rfc are generated based on secretariat data, I
believe.

Just FYI: Cutting a release and shipping is one command and less than
a minute CPU time at my end, and about the same at Glen's end. So we
don't really have to be too frugal about releases.

I see ~ 0.5 to 1 second response times to page or image requests, which
seems to match the load of the box, which is varying around 0.5 to 1.

(If you see something very different than this, then the rest of this
note doesn't matter...)

This is not a heavy load, but it's nevertheless more than I'm used to
seeing.

The top CPU consumers seem mostly to be virus scanning processes, so it
could be that there's uncommonly much spam coming in which require spam
scanning rather than just going through postconfirm confirmation handling=
=2E
Also, I see that the number of mailman commands I see which are flagged
as spam seems very high at the moment, which points in the same direction=

I'm not seeing anything from here. I am only 20 miles away from the
server center, of course, but pages for me are loading pretty much
instantaneously.

(I am not on these mailing lists, so I wouldn't have known about this
had Henrik not cc'ed me on his response, but by the time I checked in,
everything seemed to be running nice and fast again.)

Working fine for me now. At the time I sent my previous email, it was
taking 15 to 30 seconds to load the front page at http://
www.ietf.org/. It's certainly possible that the weirdness was
happening on the Cisco network.

mine broke :-)

The new agenda doesn't have document version numbers anymore, which
makes it difficult to figure out which version of a document is
actually being balloted - can they be added back? (Usually, it's the
most recent version, but sometimes authors rev the doc during IESG
Evaluation.)

Even the old agenda page always showed the most recent version number
(at the time when the cron job was run) -- in the database, the ballot
is for a draft, not specific version of the draft.

But I didn't actually intentionally remove the version number, and in
the sprint/73/pasi branch I was using for testing, it *does* show the
version number. It seems the version number was removed (not only from
this page, but many others too) by your CSS changes in changeset 1255
(file idtracker/models.py, method InternetDrafts.displayname).

Since the version number on this page doesn't really provide much
information, I guess we could leave it as is?

(BTW, one other change in changeset 1255 was linking to HTML versions
on tools.ietf.org instead of ASCII versions on www.ietf.org. I'm OK
either way -- but it seems I need to figure out how to merge the
changes since IETF73 to my testing branch so these don't come as
surprises :-)

Best regards,
Pasi

ah, that was broken as well.

Hm. I think I made that change, because in the idtracker "core" pages,
revision numbers are shown in separate column or field, and they were
redundant. In retrospect, we probably want to fix this in a different
way. Something to do during the code sprint.

We could; then I need to tweak my screen-scraper to figure out which
drafts to download for review based on something else.

That's a good change. Oh - if you linked to both the HTML and the
text, then I had a hook for my screenscraper...

The latter part of this has some valid comments IMNSHO
about user experience with the IETF web site.

I don't think that is specific to this license. They are often
very hard to read, and of course so are the underlying patents.
My view is the IETF's procedures are aimed at avoiding the need to
analyze such legal language within the IETF, but there's no
doubt this is a burden for implementors. However, that's a
political and economic problem, that can hardly be tackled by
pin-pricks applied to a standards community that has to live with
existing law just as much as the free software community does.

Not really. This being a non-Working Group draft, there's no
WG page to look at. So really you need to look for in the
Internet-Drafts status tracker. Any idiot knows that can be found
at https://datatracker.ietf.org/idtracker/ ;-)

Let me try that again. It's still hard to find the tracker
if you don't know where to look for it, starting from the
IETF home page. It's actually buried in the IESG Activities page.

So, at the relevant page in the tracker:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/idtracker/draft-housley-tls-authz-extns/
you can see the whole history of this draft since the original
publication request in April 2006.

> however I don't see a

No, the disclosures have to found separately from the IPR disclosure
page. Actually, adding a link from the tracker to the relevant
disclosures sounds like a Good Idea.

Comments (except for ones in the tracker) have to be found in the
email archives. It's an old gripe of mine that we don't somehow
track all comments on a given draft in a systematic way,
but it's hard to do that when comments arrive with oddball subjects
like "Keep Standards Open", which would defeat pretty much any robotic
sorting.

As already noted, the IETF doesn't do legal analysis. Of course, you
may find some (amateur) legal analysis in the email.

That's all true. It turns out to be a pretty challenging IT problem
though. I think your comments are good input for the IETF Tools team.

Apparently, day-to-day IESG operations already rely on the Tools
servers so heavily that reliance opon them for temporally limited
workflows like IETF Last Calls would not change the circumstances
significantly. According to my experience, the Tools servers are
operated and maintained in a very flexible manner and highly adaptive
to evolving user requirements, much more than the contracted
Sectretariat services ever will be able.
Directing reviewers to the Tools servers during LC should not incur
time-criticality, because any draft subject to LC announcement already

After sending this above message to you, I decided to go one step
further and posted the following message to the IESG and the IETF
main list. Since I'm not on the IETF main list (for reasons you
easily might guess ... :-) ), it is subject to moderation, and from
checking the list archive, it looks like it has not passed yet.
To let you know about it quickly, here it is attached:

Hello all,

as a result of the recent avalanche of messages on the IETF General
Discussion list, I suggest to apply the following two changes to
IETF LC announcements:

(a)

To better qualify the action expected,
replace the clause:

| ... Please send substantive comments to ...

by:

| ... Please read this document and send substantive comments to ...

(b)

To simplify the resource pointers, and thereby better guide readers
to more information available online regarding the subject draft,
replace the trailing clauses following the pattern:

| The file can be obtained via
| http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-xxx-yyy-zzz-nn.txt
|
| IESG discussion can be tracked via
| https://datatracker.ietf.org/public/pidtracker.cgi?...

by simply:

| The draft and related information (including IESG discussion) can be
| obtained via:

[[ If you prefer, the parenthetical clause could be elided as well. ]]

Rationale:

Any serious IETF participant that prefers direct access to the text
version of the draft file will be able to translate the above link
to the corresponding URL pointing to the I-D (mirror) archive of its
personal preference, and infrequent participants are expected to
appreciate the HTML-ized version generated by the IETF Tools servers.

It should be noted that the Tools pages following the above URI
pattern -- beyond containing a link to the related Datatracker
page -- also contain a pointer to the responsible WG pages (if any)
and offer the whole history of the draft under consideration.

Best regards,
  Alfred H=EF=BF=BDnes.

I also had forwarded that message to Henrik Levkowetz with a short

Our next code-sprint will be Saturday March 21 before the IETF meeting
in San Francisco.

See http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/ietfdb/wiki/IETF74Sprint for the
current thinking for the sprint.

If you can make it, please add yourself to the signup page, brainstorm
new ideas, and help refine the plan.

Thanks!

Rsync'ing to rsync.tools.ietf.org (which CNAMEs to zinfandel.tools.ietf.org)
hasn't worked for me for a few weeks so today I tried rsync'ing with
merlot.tools.ietf.org -- and merlot worked fine.

If this is going to persist could the instructions at http://tools.ietf.org be
revised or the CNAME for rsync.tools.ietf.org be pointed to merlot?

(Sorry if I missed this discussion.)

It's a bug that it doesn't work, and I'll look at it right away.
