Hi there. I'm preparing to submit an updated Internet-Draft that
includes the following MIME type: application/vnd.apple.mpegurl.

I'm getting errors from the idnits tools because it looks like a non-
RFC 2606 compliant FQDN. Which it is not - it's a MIME type.

Would it be possible to make the idnits tool a little smarter about
distinguishing FQDNs from MIME types - or at list special-casing the
vnd.* tree?

thanks,

Roger Pantos

Here is one example:

http://tools.ietf.org/wg/idnabis/draft-ietf-idnabis-tables/

What might happen here is that just because -05 of the document
expired, a fake -06 version was created that include text about the
expiration. When later a real -06 was released (yesterday) the html
and pdf versions where not regenerated.

This is a guess...

If you look at these URLs explicitly, you see the difference:

http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-idnabis-tables-06.txt
http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-ietf-idnabis-tables-06.txt
http://tools.ietf.org/pdf/draft-ietf-idnabis-tables-06.pdf

And then a real nit (which indicate how well the tool server works in
general ;-) ), in the list to the right, "Other Idnabis drafts:",
maybe this draft that is displayed should not be in the list. Or the
word "Other " should be removed.

Yes. I wish that a decision could be made to remove the tombstone
files, they are control information placed smack in the middle of the
data channel withouth any identifying markers, and cause no end of
pain. I try to clean them out after each rsync of drafts from the
master repository, but this one for unknown reasons hasn't been caught
by the regex pattern which is supposed to find tombstones.

I've cleaned the tombstones out now, and the pages should be OK again.

Ah. Right. I'll have a look at that.

Ha ha ha! "Dream on"...i.e. I had that discussion 10-11 years ago when =20=

I started in IESG and we started to work on an embryo of the tracker =20
etc. But it "had to be that way" and to some degree I think the only =20
alternative is to remove the file completely. Which is also sort of bad.

We have (at least) two kinds of tombstones, one that is normal expire, =20=

and then we have the one when an RFC is produced. There should also be =20=

a special one (I think) when an I-D is replaced by one with a =20
different name.

I think one path forward could be to have a standardized format for at =20=

least one line in the tombstone so that it can be caught in a more =20
simple way by tools.

But removing it and not using it -- I think that is not possible.

Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for this.

Is there any reason not to add the stream info to the .txt version
of the index?

Regards

OK, dumb question.

We have tools that generate files like the attached. They are in the
xml2rfc toolset. Any chance we could pull these together into an XML
database similar to that of the RFC Editor's?

I actually would want to change one thing; I would like to add the
author's email address to the XML file. Reason - I have some tools
that I would like to extract it using.

Out of curiosity: why is it <wg_acronym>, not <wg-acronym>? (so far, the
vocabulary has used hyphens)

Brian,

This is the result of a 10-year old policy at the RFC Editor. After
Joyce and I took over the job, the desire arose to add additional fields
to rfc-index.txt. However, input from various people in the community
convinced us that a fair number of hard-core Internauts had written
their own code to parse the obscure syntax of rfc-index.txt and reformat
it for their own purposes. We feared that adding new fields to
rfc-index.txt would screw these people. We therefore decided to freeze
the format of rfc-index.txt at the 1989 level, and instead make an html
version (and later an xml version) with extended fields. So all changes
or extensions to the index format go only into the .xml and .html versions.

Now that XML has taken over the world, maybe this policy should be
revisited.

Bob Braden

I would agree that people that are parsing rfc-index.txt should
probably be using the XML version.

Fred,

I agree re machine parsing. My concern is that when human eyes look
at the txt file, they won't find the stream name. And for some purposes,
plain text is still more convenient than *ML. I certainly see Bob's
point about compatibility with pre-1989 awk scripts though ;-)

BTW, while we're on the subject, does anyone here maintain a BibTeX
version of the RFC index?

Miguel Garcia has one, and googling "bibtext RFC" shows several more.

This was posted to the ietf list.

While the charter history pages are nice, they can be made better using
a format similar to how tools.ietf.org presents RFCs and I-Ds: a
non-printing list of versions at the top with ways to show differences
between versions.

Sounds like a job for the tools team. :-)

This was one of the more attractive parts of the suggestion to use IDs for
charter revisions. If we don't use IDs for charter revisions, I'd like to
see similar functionality provided for the approach that IS chosen...

(so, if you're reading this on tools-discuss, this is probably an
opportunity to weigh in on the IETF list about whether you're willing to
develop this functionality :-)

The tools WG pages used to have diffs between charter versions
(see e.g. http://tools.ietf.org/wg/tls/charters/ -- the "delta"
symbol leads to side-by-side diff between the versions), but=20
it looks like this broke when new www.ietf.org was deployed
in July....=20

Hui,

Please contact the RFC Editor to get the source files of RFCs. For
all RFCs we have archived the NROFF source file. If the authors
provided an XML source file before publication (which is more likely
for recent RFCs), then we have an XML source file as well.

Thank you.

Sorry for that. Should be OK now -- I'm arranging for more disk space.

Hi Hui,

On 2009-08-23 15:23 Hui Deng said the following:
> Hello, all
>
> May I know how could I get xml file for RFC 3*** and RFC 2***.

You'll have to email the RFC-Editor directly, to ask if they have the XML
file available, and you'll have to ask for the file for specific RFCs, I
believe -- they don't make the XML files available in bulk.

Best,

	Henrik

Yah. That's something the secretariat will have to fix in the metadata
for the WG; the tools page just uses the info which is in the database.

Greetings,

FYI, we have added stream information to RFC indices (XML and HTML) as
mentioned in Section 6 of
draft-iab-streams-headers-boilerplates-08. Stream is as defined in RFC
4844 (IETF, IAB, IRTF, or Independent) or Legacy*. In the case of IETF
stream, the area and WG acronym are included.

The following files will be updated on Monday (17 August 2009) to
include Stream information:

Hyperlinked index of RFCs:
  http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc-index.html (ascending by RFC number)
  http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc-index2.html (descending by RFC number)

XML index of RFCs:
  ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc-index.xml

XML schema:
  ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc-index.xsd
Note: The new elements are <stream>, <area>, and <wg_acronym>.

Each of these files is linked to from
http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc.html.

*As noted previously (regarding metadata pages), some RFCs are marked
Legacy, indicating that source information was not recorded for this
RFC; we are working on updating this information for RFCs for which it
exists.

Thank you.

RFC Editor

>From Section 6 of draft-iab-streams-headers-boilerplates-08:

Adding a reference to the stream in the header of RFCs is only one
method for clarifying from which stream an RFC originated. The RFC
editor is encouraged to add such indication in e.g., indices and
   interfaces.

For your information, the IETF website reorganization broken some of my
statistics tools. I have now updated the tools and they should be
operating in the normal manner at http://www.arkko.com/tools/stats.html

If you encounter any problems, let me know.

I'm trying to log into the ietf.org mailing list that I manage, but
I'm getting 'too many redirects' errors in both Safari and Firefox, as
well as timeout errors.

Hi Julian,

The underscore matches the field name in the database. It was carried
over from that. A quirk of the system (built by several hands over
several years) -- field names have hyphens or underscores.

Hi Hui

The delays in version 1.2 and beyond is mainly caused by the spell checker
and automatic instant updates of the text version of your draft.

There is a new version (1.32) available that has implemented several
optimizations.

When editing large files it is advisable to turn off the Automatic Update
feature. This way you can edit without delay and only update the text when
you want to see the result.

You can also turn off the spell checker in order to speed up the process
when you don't need it.

I hope this helps.

/Stefan

Actually, I just posted a new version that improves the experience quite a
bit when working with large files (or slow computers).

This is incorporated in version 1.33, available from:
http://aaa-sec.com/nroffedit/index.html

In 1.33 there is a timer that prevents any update action until 1.5 seconds
after last key press. That way there will be no updating going on while
typing. You can override this timer by checking "Instant Text Update" in the
edit menu (off by default).

/Stefan
