I would like to report two problems with the automatic IETF Draft
submission and surrounding tools. For an example, please see the I-D
Action announcement at the end of this mail.

1) Certain characters in Internet-Draft titles (such as apostrophes and
angle brackets) get escaped to HTML/XML numeric character references,
which is inappropriate and unreadable in text/plain. I have reported
this problem to tools-discuss previously, but maybe that was the
    wrong place.

2) The tool doesn't correctly extract my name (Martin Duerst), instead
it picks up my organization (Aoyama Gakuin University). The
submission page for this is at

https://datatracker.ietf.org/submit/status/35282/0c80c33fdb742b7fbc07f1f4a21f3a83/
The 'reason' for this seems to be that the line with my name in the
"Authors' Addresses" section is folded. Nevertheless, this is new,
it didn't happen previously, so it should be possible to fix it.
(I'm sorry I submitted the draft with what turns out to be wrong
    metainformation.)

Regards, Martin.

Olaf,

Thanks for the followup.

A couple of folk seem to have taken my note as suggesting that "authoritative"
references and locations be changed. That was not my intent. My intent is to
suggest taking steps to make the datatracker more visible. That's quite
different from "deprecating" particular archives.

(My understanding is that the datatracker /is/ intended to replace the
equivalent tools.ietf.org mechanism, however.)

We are, after all, spending a heck of a lot of money on the datatracker and one
would think we would want people to find it and even be told about it ahead of
time, for specific documents, not just as a detached construct.

Fair point.

So, implementers and others who are not "embedded to the IETF context" don't
care about Errata? I would not have expected you to think that.

I thought that failure to integrate Errata with RFCs was considered a problem by
rather more than esoteric IETFers.

If the submission tool accepted XML as primary format, it would have a
much simpler time to extract the metadata correctly.

The best place would be the datatracker issue tracker, and a link to that=

will appear in the datatracker itself with the next release. It's at
   http://tools.ietf.org/tools/ietfdb/

I think you expect too much of a tool which has to apply heuristics in or=
der
to extract author names from plain-text format where people are prone to =
vary
the formatting as they please. If you keep to the conventions most peopl=
e
use, you're most likely going to be OK with the new code which was put in=

place a few months ago -- it works for nearly all drafts now, while the o=
ld
tool produced a horrible amount of bad author data. But if you give the =
tool
something like this, and expects it to do the right thing before it's upd=
ated
and tweaked to handle the situation, I think you expect too much. From y=
our
draft:

>> Martin Duerst (Note: Please write "Duerst" with u-umlaut wherever
>> possible, for example as "Dürst" in XML and HTML=
=2E)

I've now tweaked the author extraction code to handle this case successfu=
lly
too; it will be part of the next datatracker release. But things would h=
ave
worked better if you'd put the parentheses on a separate line this time.
(I'm absolutely sympathetic to the desire to have your name rendered prop=
erly
in a richer character set than ascii; please don't misunderstand my comme=
nt
as any kind of objection to this -- it's just that it's not so easy to do=

correct automatic author extraction from draft text as people seem to thi=
nk
=2E..)

Chairs -

Many of you have found places where the new WG tracking tool could be =
tweaked to make
it more useful for you. This is a high-bandwidth opportunity to make =
those tweaks happen.

Please join us, or identify someone you know who can work in the changes =
you need and=20
help them make it to this session.

All parts of the codebase are fair game, not just the WG tracking tool. =
We're keeping a list
of ideas for improvement at =
<http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/ietfdb/wiki/EnhancementIdeas>.
If you have something that you've been wanting that's not on that list, =
please add it (or send
email to tools-discuss@ietf.org).

See you in Taipei!

It seems I missed any discussion of the current status of the Trac/SVN =
combo.
Can someone update me?

In trying to update my ietf CLI tool, I am now unable to either push a =
new version nor come up to date.

The error for doing an "svn ci" is:
Sending ietf
svn: Commit failed (details follow):
svn: No such revision 11

# svn up
svn: A reported revision is higher than the current repository HEAD =
revision.

How can I get this back in synch?

Speaking of SVN, I updated the instructions here:

I had the same problem recently with the IETF's SVN server -- it appeared
to have reverted to an older version. I believe this happened after a
server died. You should contact Henrik and see if he is aware of the
problem
in your specific repository.

FYI, if you want to just get on with it and you know you have the most
recent up-to-date copy of stuff on your PC, here is what I did: I moved
all my files to a different (temporary) directory tree, deleting my SVN
tree, re-pulled the SVN tree from the SVN server, moved the files from
my temporary tree back into this new SVN tree, and committed them to the
server. Of course, that meant loss of commit history and suchlike from
the SVN repository, but that wasn't a problem for me in this case.

I'll hope that Henrik can wave a magic wand first.

itself, but a new one has appeared. Please see the thread from the =
ietf-general mailing list from yesterday and today. This same issue was =
reported by Russ Housley on a non-IETF mailing list in June, and it =
persists.

I'd like to bet that it didn't exactly fix itself; I've had to take care
of a number of problems after having to move all svn and trac support to
a new server after the active svn.tools.ietf.org failed to come up after
a power failure on September 5th...

Thanks, Paul.

The clues unearthed by people on ietf@ietf.org helped me find a fix.

Generally speaking, the best address to make me aware of both problems
and discussions (like the one on ietf@ietf.org) which can throw light
on problems with tools.ietf.org is <webmaster@tools.ietf.org>. I happened
to check the tools-discuss email folder not too long after you sent this
alert, but mail to <webmaster@ietf.org> will end up directly in my main
inbox and be dealt with in a much more timely manner than list mail.

Best regards,

	Henrik

trac was being updated yesterday - there was a period where it was =
generating
interesting errors, but afaik it isn't now. Maybe something got =
inappropriately cached?

Hello,

Thanks for this great tool. It's much better than alternatives (hdiff,
diff2html, ...). The style of the HTML output is really outstanding.

I have a bug report, feature requests and questions.

Bugs:
     $> cd rfcdiff-1.41/
     $> make
Makefile:6: ../Makefile.common: No such file or directory
make: *** No rule to make target `../Makefile.common'. Stop.

Why the Makefile includes "../Makefile.common" from the outer directory?

Features:
   Add an option (-R) to compare directories;
   Add an option (-o) to choose an output file;
   Add an option (-s) to check spaces;

Questions:
Why not to give this tool a general-purpose name? It seems to be able to
compare non-RFC files.

I'm planning to integrate this tool to my open-source project [1] to
show differences in C/C++ header files.

I'm happy to hear that :-)

The bugs (the one below, and the others in separate email) are noted --
I don't know that I'll be able to fix them in the very near timespace,
but I'll try to get to them within a couple of weeks.

Ah. Distribution tarball bug. It works for me locally, of course.
Attaching it to this mail for your use till I get that fixed.

The -R seems like it would need some work, but the two other ones could
probably be accomplished fairly easily.

> Questions:
> Why not to give this tool a general-purpose name? It seems to be able to

Don't know -- it started out as a dedicated tool exactly because the
regular diffs couldn't handle the shifting page splits of the IETF
documents very well at all :-)

> I'm planning to integrate this tool to my open-source project [1] to

Cool! And an interesting project!

(And a nit report in return for you: The graphic on the front page,
http://linuxtesting.org/upstream-tracker/index.html:
http://linuxtesting.org/upstream-tracker/versions/history.png
has this vertical text to the left: "Avg number of ABI breaks ..."
which should probably say 'API' instead of ABI :-)

It's working for me after this patch:

I've created a temporary workaround for -R by combining HTML reports for
standalone files into the one big HTML file and finally integrated the
tool on the site. This is a sample result:
http://linuxtesting.org/upstream-tracker/diffs/libssh/0.4.8_to_0.4.90/diff.html

There are also a bunch of libraries updated with the new HTML diff in
the Tracker: Qt4, KDE Libs, Barry, OpenBabel. Remaining 365 libraries
will be updated on the next build.

This is exactly an ABI, that is Application Binary
Interface=API+compiler ABI, "API on binary level" or more simply
"compiled API". If ABI is stable (i.e. the library is backward binary
compatible), then programs can run on newer versions of a library
without the need to recompile. The Tracker is planned to be updated soon
to check also an API stability of libraries, i.e. backward
build-time/source compatibility.

There was a real error couple of days ago, possibly with similar outputs to these. We reported it to Henrik and he fixed it quickly (as usual :-) I've seen it once after that, but that may have been some over-enthusiastic proxy holding state from before.

The problem appeared randomly on various tools.ietf.org wg pages and as far as I could tell, occurrences were seen for a day or two.

Ah. Ok, I understand. I wasn't aware of this use of 'ABI'; thanks for
the explanation!
