Hi Ted,

On 2013-11-10 20:07 Ted Lemon said the following:
> I've been getting several of these a day on various document aliases.
> They are clearly spam. Is there any way for tools to block a sender
> that's a known spammer?

Several; none of them foolproof. I'll blacklist both the sender and the
MTA, and hope that is sufficient.

Best regards,

	Henrik

Hi,

I created a tiny converter to eliminate the tedious creation of XML
references for anything that's not an RFC or I-D. Alas, this is still
needed even with lyx2rfc.

You can find a bibtex citation for essentially any academic paper, so
now it's just a matter of pasting it into the tool, and out pops a
beautiful <reference/> element. The code is at
https://github.com/yaronf/bibtex2rfc. Comments, fixes and forks are
welcome. Enjoy!

Input:

@INPROCEEDINGS{Bellovin92encryptedkey,
     author = {Steven M. Bellovin and Michael Merritt},
     title = {Encrypted Key Exchange: Password-Based Protocols Secure
Against Dictionary Attacks},
     booktitle = {IEEE SYMPOSIUM ON RESEARCH IN SECURITY AND PRIVACY},
     year = {1992},
     pages = {72--84},
     publisher = {}
}

Output:

<reference anchor="Bellovin92encryptedkey"><front><title>Encrypted key
exchange: password-based protocols secure against dictionary
attacks</title><author fullname="Steven M. Bellovin" initials="S. M."
surname="Bellovin" /><author fullname="Michael Merritt" initials="M."
surname="Merritt" /><date year="1992" /></front></reference>

Yes, I know some information was lost. As I said, fixes are welcome...

Thanks,

     Yaron

Thank you Yaron. I'm sure this will be very useful.

Hi,

The online xml2rfc converter is currently hosted on only one server, one
of the IETF tools servers which I provide. Unfortunately, it is in need
of some service today, and since I don't have control over the xml.resource.org
DNS record in order to re-point it to another service, there will be a service
interruption.

We'll try to make it as brief as possible, but in order to make things
easier for you, in case you're in the middle of working on a draft and are
using the online service, I've set up xml2rfc on another of the tools
servers, for your use:

	https://xml2rfc.tools.ietf.org/

I expect the service interruption on xml.resource.org to take place from
14:30 to 15:00 today, but will come back with an updated time if needed.

Best regards,

	Henrik

Update:

The work is going slower than expected (because the machine in question
is a rather old box); we now expect a downtime of 60 minutes, i.e., we're
expecting the following down period:

  22 Nov 2013	14:30 to 15:30 CET
  22 Nov 2013	13:30 to 14:30 UTC
  22 Nov 2013	08:30 to 09:30 EST
  22 Nov 2013	05:30 to 06:30 PST

Best regards,

	Henrik

Has anyone checked with the Secretariat what is and could be made
available? Over in the rtcweb Working Group people noted that at the
moment the logs do not expose globally unique identifiers, which may
be necessary to identify who said something in the channel during a
meeting (I think that's a bug as much as it is a feature).

Hi Carl,

Earlier today, I had to take down merlot.tools.ietf.org (which handled
xml.resource.org) for service, and it's failing to come back up after
re-boot.  I've set up the xml2rfc service on grenache.tools.ietf.org
instead -- would you be kind enough to re-point xml.resource.org to
grenache.tools.ietf.org?

  grenache.tools.ietf.org has address 77.72.230.30
  grenache.tools.ietf.org has IPv6 address 2a01:3f0:1:2::30

Best regards,

	Henrik

New update:

Unfortunately, the machine that has been serving xml.resource.org does not
seem to want to come online again after re-boot. I've asked for the DNS
records to be re-pointed to the machine which is now providing the xml2rfc
online service (xml2rfc.tools.ietf.org). Until that happens, please
continue to go to xml2rfc.tools.ietf.org if you need to use the online
xml2rfc service.

Sorry for the bother :-(

	Henrik

The server software that is/was being used (ejabberd) would either put =
the log files in XML or HTML but not both. Since they wanted them hosted =
on a web page, they chose HTML.

They are in the process of switching the ejabberd server to prosody. We =
are hoping there will be more flexibility once this transition happens.

Thanks,
Tom

Fair. I wondered, as I wrote that reply, if this is actually
documented anywhere. I think the naming convention is just a
tradition that the tools team latched onto ("Hey, wouldn't it be
helpful if we grabbed all of these pre-WG docs?"), and now the tools
reinforce the tradition.

Write to them. See if that's what it is, and encourage documentation.

Hi Randy,

My reference is Section 7 of http://www.ietf.org/ietf-ftp/1id-guidelines.txt ,
in particular the description of ID filename components 2 and 3.

But yes, it's also the case that I at some point in time said "Right, it
might be useful for people if I filtered on the 3rd name part and presented
that as related documents for a WG".

This is a useful feature and there are some chairs that encourage ID
authors to name drafts accordingly.

What would perhaps be useful is to add a link (or explanation) to the
heading "related active documents ..." that explains that the list is
generated entirely from the ID name, and that it may not be complete
or accurate. I.e., partly to explain to folk how the list is generated
and is thus just a convention/hueristic while also explaining what
folk should do if they want their ID to appear in the list...

yes, i probably read

   3. Document name. For non-working group documents that are targeted
       at a working group, this string often begins with the working
       group abbreviation. This document name is a word or two that
       reflect what the draft is about.

in 1938. but how was i to infer that 'often begins' became magic in the
21st century?

i guess it's cool if one knows about it. thanks.

i would think that the wg page maintainers would be able to add
documents to that section which did not have magic names. it is
"related documents" not "magically named documents," and i can envision,
for example, the foo wg thinking a bar wg document was related. but i
think the bikeshed really should be magenta.

:-)

One other problem with "related documents" is that I can think of more
than a few documents that authors would claim are related to 1/2 dozen
WGs or more... Could quickly get out of hand...

It could, but that's where it would be nice if the chairs could
control it. It's fine for the default to be that documents with the
wgname as the third token are put in the list by default, but it would
be really nice if the chairs could:
1. add other documents that they consider to be related, not requiring
the authors to artificially rename the doc and *allowing* a doc to be
related to more than one WG, and
2. toss docs out of that list -- just because an author wants it to be
related doesn't always make it so.

Hi,

http://xml.resource.org/ says:

> rsync access is available at two independent servers =
(rsync1.xml.resource.org::xml2rfc.bibxml, and =
rsync3.xml.resource.org::xml2rfc.bibxml) =97 after you pick one, you =
shouldn't switch.=20

both of these seem down?

rsync2.xml.resource.org aka runaway.fenron.com is up, but not sure if it =
is up-to-date?

Lars
