I still think "octets" is more accurate and that is a good reason to
use "octets" instead of "bytes".

I agree, but at the very least a footnote should define bytes as 8-bit
bytes... It seems trivial, but I'd wager that at least one
implementation will be saved a lot of headache by this simple definition.

I'd be very surprised if anyone has shipped an implementation using the
"*-bytes" property names yet (I know Apple hasn't because we're waiting
for a consensus on the issues), so this is probably the best time to
make a name change.

I agree. At first I wondered about the discussion. For me a byte had 8 bits.
But octets avoids all discussions how many bits it has. So now would be the
time to change.

Cheers, Edgar

P.S. I didn't get any reaction on some earlier posts. But I guess silence
means disagreement :-), so it's ok.

Current plan: I'll change it to octets. I had a hard time determining
consensus on this one given the reaction at the in-person meeting.

I think the consensus at the WG meeting was that using the word "octet" was
dumb, as we don't refer to "mega-octets" rather than megabytes, but that we
should clarify that "byte" refers to 8 bits for the sticklers.

Well.

This is an application of WebDAV, and WebDAV is an extension to HTTP. Can't
we just stick to HTTP terminology?

Hi,

I am working with a company that works in Document Management Systems. =
It has its own DMS. And i have written WebDAV server to access the =
shared repository of this DMS. I am following the RFC 2518.
The exact scenario in which i am working is as follows:
 - I'm using Tomcat4.0 and have written the WebDAV server using RFC =
2518.
 - and using Microsoft WebFolders to access the DMS repository.
=20
Now i am facing two majors problems:
1. First is regarding Multiple Logins. Actually, i have used the Tomcat =
Authentication module. So, whenever a user wants to access the shared =
repository of the DMS through Microsoft WebFolders, he/she has to go =
through the authentication procedure. Once authenticated, he can access =
the DMS contents. But whenever he opens resources through webfolders =
which open in Microsoft native applicaions like MS Word, Office, =
Internet Explorer etc, he is prompted for authentication again although =
he has already been authenticated. Therefore a single user makes =
multiple connections at the server. I want to find a solution so that a =
user is authenticated only once.
2. Also there is no means to disconnect the user from the server while =
using WebFolders. I also want to ask is there anyway to disconnect the =
user.

These are the major issues that are halting my progress. therefore, =
please help me to resolve these issues.
Thanx a lot.

Anil Bhandari

Hi, I am working on Tomcat 4.1.x for a project. My project has a requirement
to have web folders for uploading images that can be viewed in the site, that
we are developing. The number of image files will be very large and that will
be a daily operation. I wana know more about how I can use webdav that is
implemented in tomcat 4.1.x for this. Since I was not able to get more
documentation on the 4.1.x. I say the slide project but i dont need that much
for my project. I just need to give authentication for the webfolders
folders dynamically.

Thanks in advance,
Prabahar

I can't find any discussion of this detail on the list or in the bis spec:

IMO the production for "Resource" in the tagged list form of the If
header should change to allow an absolute path as well as absolute URI,
for the same reason that the Destination header was changed.

Hi,

I have created a server with Dav enabled that supports the options and
propfind methods. I have tested it with a Dav client it is working fine.

but when I have tried it with the microsoft windows XP 'my network places',
windows client send to my server a propfind request with an empty body and I
respond by giving all the prop properties but on the client side, windows
gives an error

"[my server] is not accessible."

eventhough I have no security restriction on my server.

what could be the problem with communicating with a microsoft window client?

Thanks,

Burhan

This was the only feedback I've seen. If we have consensus here, I think we
should add an issue to Jason's list, and note that the resolution is to add
the allprop/include behaviour into RFC2518bis.

If there's disagreement, I'd like to hear about it. This issue has been
around way too long :-)

Subject: [Moderator Action] Problem with Single Sign-On and DAV

Hello - I am using a document management product and have enabled its
authentication through an SSO product. In addition, the Document management
product has WEBDAV. However, when I try and access the system through DAV,
it challenges me with USERID and PWD again. The problem is that the
USERID/PWD no longer are in the Document Management product. They are in
the SSO database. How do I resolve this issue?

I appreciate your help!

Hello,

This is a reminder to people planning to attend Interim WEBDAV WG
meeting in January to RSVP at least 1 week before the meeting so
visitor badges can be printed, and refreshments and meals can be
planned. Apple Computer will be closed for the holidays from December
24, 2002 through January 1, 2003 so any RSVPs made during that time
will not be acknowledged until after the first of the year.

I've copied the details concerning the meeting and how to RSVP below.

- Jim

I think Jim Luther neglected to give the precise RSVP contact info for the
Interim WG meeting:

Please RSVP to Nora Mosqueda <mosqueda@apple.com> and let Nora
know that you plan to attend the IETF WebDAV Working Group Interim
Meeting (include "WebDAV WG Interim Meeting" in the title of your
email), what day(s) you will be attending, and if you have any dietary
requirements we should be aware of.

Thanks!

Hello--

I am trying to mount a DAVfs2 file system (davfs2-0.2.1) served by
Christian Scholz's python davserver (0.5.2), and have encountered a
problem with lock requests. Both client and server are running on
Debian GNU/Linux 3.0.

First of all, the server package is mostly Class 1-compliant, according
to the Litmus tests; it definitely does not support locking. I am able
to mount the DAVfs file system, get directory listings, read files, and
create new files. But when I attempt to overwrite an existing file, the
following happens:

  1. DAVfs attempts to acquire an exclusive write lock on the resource.
  2. The server returns a 501 error.
  3. The client fails to overwrite the resource (I have tried to edit
and save the file directly with Vim, and to save the file locally
and 'cp' it to the DAVfs directory; same result either way).

I can see a couple of possible server-side issues that may be preventing
the resource from being overwritten: one is that the body of the 501
error message appears to be sent before the headers; the other is that
the file permissions may not allow overwriting. But I would like to know
what the server and client should be doing in this situation. I don't
see any relevant language in RFC2518, and both client and server
software are minimally documented. Are there references I should be
looking at, or is there an informal consensus as to what should happen
here?

Thanks in advance for any information, and happy holidays (assuming it
is a holiday in your part of the world)!
