#264: xml:space and spanx style attribute implemented

 I fixed xml:space in xml2rfc v2, '''without''' modifying the DTD
 (rfc2629.dtd).

 The behavior is exactly as one would expect, which I tested against a
 variety of inputs for both the artwork and spanx elements.

 Additionally, I implemented the semi-documented spanx styles bare, vemph,
 strong, deluxe, and nobreak. (See xml2rfc-12.pdf.)

 I am including two patches: the first patch includes extensive debugging
 information during development. The second patch has this debugging
 information removed. (This upload also has my modifications for the other
 ticket, but those modifications such as to the DTD can be removed if it is
 overly bothersome. For the defect at hand, no DTD modification is
 necessary.)

 Can we please start with a description of a bug?

 What do you mean by "I fixed xml:space in xml2rfc v2" -- what was broken?

#264: xml:space and spanx style attribute implemented

Comment (by dev+ietf@seantek.com):

 Description of bug:
 Setting xml:space to "preserve" or "default" did not have any effect. It
 should have had an effect. Various documentation insists that it should
 have an effect; therefore, it should be fixed.

 draft-reschke-xml2rfc says "Determines whitespace handling."
 Prior documentation dating back to RFC 2629 indicates that xml:space
 should have some effect.

#264: xml:space and spanx style attribute implemented

Comment (by dev+ietf@seantek.com):

 More detailed description of fix (regarding xml:space):
 xml:space = "preserve" preserves whitespace (SP and HTAB) and line breaks.
 xml:space = "default" collapses whitespace (SP and HTAB) and line breaks
 into a single space.

 For either value, auto-wrap (i.e., wrap to box/word break) is unaffected.

#264: xml:space and spanx style attribute implemented

Comment (by julian.reschke@gmx.de):

 This is bug, not a feature. Citing myself: "According to the DTD, the
 default value is "preserve". Tests however show that it doesn't have any
 effect on processing; thus this attribute will be removed in future
 versions of the vocabulary."

 What problem are you trying to solve here?

#264: xml:space and spanx style attribute implemented

Comment (by dev+ietf@seantek.com):

 The problem I solved is that it did not work; now it works. I see the
 draft documentation. Now the draft documentation can be updated to reflect
 that it has an effect on processing, as described above.

 To your specific question: "What problem are you trying to solve here?" I
 tried to solve the problem where xml:space = preserve did not preserve
 whitespace and line breaks; conversely, xml:space = default did not
 collapse whitespace and line breaks into a single space.

#264: xml:space and spanx style attribute implemented

Comment (by julian.reschke@gmx.de):

 a) Now it has an effect in one of three v2 implementations., and still
 will be removed in v3. So what's the gain?

 b) I'm trying to understand why this (mis-)feature is needed in practice.
 Please provide use cases.

#264: xml:space and spanx style attribute implemented

Comment (by dev+ietf@seantek.com):

 a) Well I am willing to work on the other v2 implementations, if you point
 me to them.

 b) I have already provided several use cases (i.e., related to prior posts
 about line breaks). In addition: the HTML output is meaningfully enhanced.
 For example if you want to have code snippets inline in the text, and you
 want to highlight particular segments, <spanx style="vstrong"
 xml:space="preserve"> does the job. Remember that <spanx> elements cannot
 be nested. In some languages the number and positioning of spaces is
 meaningful--hence preservation of whitespace is desirable in and of
 itself, without recourse to no-break-space kludges. I am sure that others
 can chime in with other examples.

#264: xml:space and spanx style attribute implemented

Changes (by julian.reschke@gmx.de):

 * status:  new => closed
 * resolution:   => wontfix

Comment:

 Again, spanx is dead and being phased out. Please use your energy to
 review the v3 spec and provide feedback.

 Preservation of whitespace in code examples is indeed needed, and that's
 what we currently have <artwork> for.

#264: xml:space and spanx style attribute implemented

Comment (by dev+ietf@seantek.com):

 Look, preservation of whitespace in code examples is indeed needed, but
 <artwork> forces these examples into figures that in HTML are rendered
 with the <pre> tag. In text it also forces the code to be offset by blank
 lines; I have need to refer to these code examples inline with the text
 (without extraneous CRLF CRLF characters).

Comment (by julian.reschke@gmx.de):

 I recommend that you provide a complete example (of spec text, not
 markup), showing what you need. And please do so on the rfc-interest
 mailing list. This is a new feature, so that's the right venue to discuss
 it.

#265: Multiple paragraphs in numbered list item

 It is not unusual in a numbered list to have a single list item with
 blank-line-separated material at the same indention as the rest of the
 list item. With xmlrfc v1, that form can be constructed as
   <list style="numbers">
     ...
   <t> this item is numbered
   <vspace blankLines="1"/>
   this is more material under the same number, with the same left
 alignment.
   </t></list>

 With the current version, the "this is more material" paragraph is left-
 justified to the containing section.

 If that were the intended behavior now, it should be possible to simulate
 the desired layout with

   <list style="numbers">
     ...
   <t> this item is numbered
   <list style="empty">
   <t>this is more material under the same number, with the same left
 alignment.</t></list>
   </t></list>

 But, with the current version, that produces text left-justified a few
 characters to the right of where it should be.

#266: Cross references in appendix to appendices produce "Appendix" twice

 If an appendix references another appendix with an <xref>-stype cross
 reference, the text produced is, e.g., "Appendix Appendix A", not
 "Appendix A". Nothing the RFC Editor can't fix manually, but it is
 rather ugly.

#267: Infinite loop when word-joiner is present

 xml2rfc v2.4.8 goes into an infinite loop when certain illegal characters,
 specifically &wj; (either word joiner or an unrecognized entity
 reference), are present.

 For example, with the attached XML file, if the following text is present
 around line 78:
 ldap:/&wj;/&wj;/&wj;cn=ExampleCA,o=ExampleCo,st=California,c=US

 Then, the following output will come out of xml2rfc:

 {{{
 WARNING: Illegal character replaced in string:
 WARNING: Illegal character replaced in string:
 …(continues until process killed)
 WARNING: Illegal character replaced in string:
 ^CTraceback (most recent call last):
   File "/usr/local/bin/xml2rfc", line 225, in <module>
     main()
   File "/usr/local/bin/xml2rfc", line 210, in main
     pagedwriter.write(filename)
   File "~/Library/Python/2.7/lib/python/site-
 packages/xml2rfc-2.4.8-py2.7.egg/xml2rfc/writers/base.py", line 1173, in
 write
     xml2rfc.utils.safeReplaceUnicode(self.r)
   File "~/Library/Python/2.7/lib/python/site-
 packages/xml2rfc-2.4.8-py2.7.egg/xml2rfc/utils.py", line 301, in
 safeReplaceUnicode
     element.text = _replace_unicode_characters(element.text)
   File "~/Library/Python/2.7/lib/python/site-
 packages/xml2rfc-2.4.8-py2.7.egg/xml2rfc/utils.py", line 326, in
 _replace_unicode_characters
     entity = match.group(1).encode('ascii', 'xmlcharrefreplace')
 }}}

 Therefore, it appears that something is going wrong in
 _replace_unicode_characters in utils.py.

 This infinite loop condition seems to appear both in a locally executed
 version, and on xml2rfc.ietf.org.

#268: Crash with <reference> that has no anchor attribute

 The intention (c.f., draft-reschke-xml2rfc-09) is apparently that the
 anchor attribute of <reference> elements is now mandatory. As of v2.4.6
 (svn r1450),
 the DTD used by xml2rfc (trunk/cli/xml2rfc/templates/rfc2929.dtd) has:
 <!ELEMENT reference   (front,seriesInfo*,format*,annotation*)>
 <!ATTLIST reference
           anchor      ID                 #IMPLIED
           target      %URI;              #IMPLIED>
 making the anchor optional.

 Accordingly parsing a xml2rfc source with a reference that has no anchor
 attribute does not trigger an XML parsing error, but it crashes later with
 the following traceback (from the online version):
 Traceback (most recent call last):
   File "/usr/local/bin/xml2rfc", line 5, in <module>
     pkg_resources.run_script('xml2rfc==2.4.9dev0', 'xml2rfc')

   File "lxml.etree.pyx", line 2295, in lxml.etree._Attrib.__getitem__
 (src/lxml/lxml.etree.c:59806)
 KeyError: 'anchor'

 The error occurs whether the PI is symrefs="no" or symrefs="yes".

 A file that triggers the error is attached.

 Presumably the fix is to change the DTD from:
           anchor      ID                 #IMPLIED
 to:
           anchor      ID                 #REQUIRED

 Note: This part of the DTD has been copied over from v1.36. The online v1
 tool also crashes when symrefs="no" but produces a sensible error message
 when symrefs="yes".

 Tested the attachment with version 2.4.8, which worked Ok. I believe this
 has been fixed
 in one of the releases since the bug was filed.

#198: Misleading warnings for content encoding not matching the <?xml
encoding="..."?> XML declaration

Comment (by duerst@it.aoyama.ac.jp):

 Changed summary because the XML declaration is not a PI (see
 http://www.w3.org/TR/xml/#sec-prolog-dtd).

#269: Not all <?rfc private="Final" ?> actions implemented

 When <?rfc private="Final" ?> is present in the source document, the V1
 xml2rfc adds a "Final" notation to the document header to the left of the
 author list. This is not done by V2.

 Also, when <?rfc private="Final" ?> is present in the source document, in
 V1, no expiration date is emitted, including in the .txt document footers.
 However "Expires ..." is emitted by V2, even for final documents.

 Building the attached source file demonstrates both of these differences
 in the .txt output. The "Expires ..." behavior occurs in the .txt output
 but not the .html.

#270: Extra information emitted after the document title by V2

 XML2RFC V2 emits the draft name string after the document title in the
 title page, whereas V1 does not. It's not clear that this addition is
 necessary.

 The attached source file demonstrates this both in .txt and .html output.
 Specifically the string "openid-connect-core-1_0" is emitted on a new line
 after the title line "OpenID Connect Core 1.0".

#247: &rfc.number; yields "XXXX" no matter what

Comment (by tony@att.com):

 Place a reference to one of the predefined entities, such as &nbhy;.

 Xml2rfc will generate a spurious message about "WARNING: Parsing Error:
 Entity 'nbhy' not defined, line xxx, column yyy."

 Parser.py, around line 420 has this code:

 {{{
         # Get hold of the rfc number (if any) in the rfc element, so we
 can
         # later resolve the "&rfc.number;" entity.
         try:
             for action, element in context:
                 if element.tag == "rfc":
                     self.rfc_number = element.attrib.get("number", None)
         except lxml.etree.XMLSyntaxError as e:
             xml2rfc.log.warn("Parsing Error: %s" % e)
             self.rfc_number = None
 }}}

 Then around line 111, there is this code:

 {{{
         if request == u"internal:/rfc.number":
             if self.rfc_number:
                 return self.resolve_string(self.rfc_number, context)
             return self.resolve_string("XXXX", context)
 }}}
