#257: extraneous warnings for entities

Comment (by arusso@amsl.com):

 In case this helps anyone troubleshoot their own installation: this was
 resolved by updating several software packages (including lxml) to the
 current versions.

#289: Deployment of XML2RFC on xml2RFC.ietf.org uses wrong options

 When using XML2RFC on xml2rfc.ietf.org one gets a waring:

 WARNING: The -f and --filename options are deprecated and will go away in
 version 3.0 of xml2rfc.  Use -f instead
 WARNING: You should not specify conflicting -f and -o options. Using -o
 OUTPUT

 Can you please correct this deployment so this warning doesn't hide real
 warnings related to document.

#289: Deployment of XML2RFC on xml2RFC.ietf.org uses wrong options

Comment (by henrik@levkowetz.com):

 These should of course not show, but I know I've changed the -f option in
 one place, so a bit more information about
 url and form options would be good to have when debugging this.

 Also, I'm not sure how these are hiding real warnings -- it would be good
 to get more information about that, too.

#289: Deployment of XML2RFC on xml2RFC.ietf.org uses wrong options

Comment (by tony@att.com):

 Henrik, xml2rfc.cgi invokes xml2rfc with the arguments

 {{{
 xml2rfc --verbose --cache=/tmp --$MODE --out=$OUTNAME $INPUT
 }}}

 It generates this warning message:

 {{{
 WARNING: The -f and --filename options are deprecated and will go away in
 version 3.0 of xml2rfc.  Use -f instead
 WARNING: You should not specify conflicting -f and -o options. Using -o
 OUTPUT
 }}}

 To replicate, use the web form at http://xml2rfc.ietf.org and feed it a
 file. At the top of the next page, you'll see the message "Warnings
 exist". This is triggered by the above WARNING message, as well as any
 other real Warnings.

 If you can let me know what arguments SHOULD be used by xml2rfc.cgi to
 invoke xml2rfc, I'll adjust xml2rfc.cgi accordingly.

Hi,

I can't seem to get a draft to be processed. I always get a "Unable to
resolve external request:" for references, e.g.:

	ERROR: Unable to parse the XML document: INPUT
	 INPUT: Line 674: Unable to resolve external request:
"http://xml.resource.org/public/rfc/bibxml/reference.RFC.2119.xml"

I verified that the link exists and can be opened. The same happens
both on the website and when launching the xml2rfc tool on my PC
locally. Passing the XML to the old version of the website works.

Strangely enough, it doesn't seem to be doing the same for *all*
references: that is, if I comment the RFC2119 line, it works fine with,
e.g., RFC3261 and a few others, but then fails on another reference
(RFC7092). Not sure as to what may be the cause, as all references have
exactly the same format (and same host), and worked fine up to a few
weeks ago (when I converted the last version of my draft).

Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with Python, so I don't know what I
can do to check what's wrong myself. Let me know if there's anything I
can do to help you tackle this issue.

Thanks,
Lorenzo

It it hurts, don't do it :-)

(Translation: if your file was self-contained and wouldn't depend on
external dependencies, you wouldn't have this problem)

I have been updating a couple of internet drafts and find that the
external referencing mechanism no longer works for XML2RFC.

Has something changed in the method to specify external references?

Regards,

Steve

We're working on resolving this.

A temporary workaround has been put into place, so you should be able to
continue working.

Hi Tony,

thanks for looking into this!

Unfortunately the workaround doesn't seem to be working for me: I'm not
getting any error anymore, but the service returns an empty txt file.
I'm still getting the same error when trying the tool (updated via pip)
locally instead, but I'm not sure the workaround has been pushed there
so please disregard in case.

I can provide the xml source that is causing this, if you think it can
help debugging the issue.

Thanks,
Lorenzo

#290: URI don't add up

 So I have this 80-page draft,
 https://gist.githubusercontent.com/miekg/0251f3e28652fa603a51/raw/7e0a7028506f7d2948e4ad3091f533711bf5f2a4/learninggo.txt

 actually this is a book, but I'm testing my conversion to xml2rfc. And the
 URI section has:

 {{{
 9.2.  URIs

    [1] http://golang.org/doc/

    [2] fig/array-vs-slice.png

    [3] fig/stack.png

    [4] fig/reflection.png

    [5] https://www.debian.org
 }}}

 However the book has URI going up to 7:

 {{{
    o  "len(array) == cap(array) == m"

                           fig/array-vs-slice.png

                           Array versus slice [7]

                     Figure 1: An array versus a slice.

    Given an array, or another slice, a new slice is created via
 }}}

 I tried to make a shorter example that has the same defect, but I failed.
 Maybe someone more familiar with the xml2rfc code can comment before I try
 that.

#247: &rfc.number; yields "XXXX" no matter what

Changes (by henrik@levkowetz.com):

 * status:  new => closed
 * resolution:   => worksforme

Comment:

 This was finally traced down to a library problem. Upgrading pip, then
 upgrading the requirements fixed this.

Hi,
(I thought maybe I should be asking someone from the RFC editor, but I coul=
dn't find contact info anywhere.)

I'm trying to use this validator: http://xml2rfc.ietf.org/

I'm starting from this template: http://www.rfc-editor.org/template-bare-05=
.txt
(Found from IETF tools page)

But the validator doesn't load the template; there are multiple problems.

Can you tell me which is more correct, the template or the validator?
I think the template is probably more correct, since it has,
<rfc category=3D"info" docName=3D"draft-ietf-xml2rfc-template-05" ipr=3D"fu=
ll3978">

But the validator doesn't understand that value of "ipr".
Also confusing is http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2629, which indicates "full=
2026" as a possible value of "ipr".

Can you help me sort out which templates and tools are current?

Thanks,

David Dolson

#287: missing line breaks in list in NROFF output

Comment (by henrik@levkowetz.com):

 Ok, I've identified where this fails, and should be able to insert the
 appropriate nroff command, but I'm not sure what the correct nroff should
 look like. Could you provide a sample? I might guess at something like
 the following, but guessing isn't quite the thing to do here ,:-)

 {{{
 Here is a list:
 .in 6

 apples
 .br
 bananas
 .br
 cherries
 .br
 dates
 }}}

#287: missing line breaks in list in NROFF output

Comment (by tony@att.com):

 The v1 nroff processor would repeat the .in indent command. (Actually, v1
 uses a combination of .in and .ti [temporary indent].)

 When the list has blank lines between, they are done using a blank line in
 the input.
 For example,
 {{{
 .ti 3
 apples
 .ti 3
 bananas
 .ti 3
 cherries
 .ti 3
 dates
 }}}

 or

 {{{
 .ti 3
 apples

 .ti 3
 bananas

 .ti 3
 cherries

 .ti 3
 dates
 }}}

 The use of .in and .ti should be considered equivalent. (The leading dot
 in each command is an implicit .br.)

#287: missing line breaks in list in NROFF output

Comment (by henrik@levkowetz.com):

 Ok. Is the use of .ti 3 (or .ti 6, or .ti N) a must, or would .br work,
 too? To me, the use of .ti N in addition to the current .in in front of
 the list looks a lot more hacky than using just .br, and in addition to
 that the code to produce it becomes more complex than for .br , since I
 then have to make the indentation level available at the place where .ti
 would be inserted, which is a different place than where the .in N is
 handled.

 No big deal, but I'd like to understand and not make things more
 complicated and less readable if it's all the same ,:-)

Alice,
Thanks, that worked.

Another thing I've noted is that the tool at http://xml2rfc.ietf.org/ doesn=
't generate working links for references to RFCs or I.Ds

For example, this is the link generated for "BCP 78" in the boilerplate:
http://xml2rfc.ietf.org/home/www/tools.ietf.org/tools/rfcmarkup/rfcmarkup?b=
cp=3D78

And this is the link generated for RFC2119:
http://xml2rfc.ietf.org/home/www/tools.ietf.org/tools/rfcmarkup/rfcmarkup?r=
fc=3D2119

This is the link generated for an ID:
http://xml2rfc.ietf.org/home/www/tools.ietf.org/tools/rfcmarkup/rfcmarkup?d=
raft=3Ddraft-homma-sfc-forwarding-methods-analysis-01

These links don't work for me, getting "Object not found!" errors.

Dave,

We have updated that template to use one of the current options (ipr=3D'tru=
st200902') as described on http://xml2rfc.ietf.org/ under "To generate the =
latest boilerplate".

The RFC Editor can be reached at rfc-editor@rfc-editor.org. Additional cont=
act info is here: http://www.rfc-editor.org/contacts.html

Thank you.

Normally there are no links generated in the boilerplate. I'm not clear
why you are getting a link there.

I assume you're referring to the HTML output format. That is indeed what
it generates, but if you save the .htm file to disk, this becomes an internal
link to the list of references, and the list of references has an external link
to http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2119. No problem there.

And similarly for I-Ds.

Mostly though, you need to worry about the text output format, which is what we
post on-line. I find the HTML format useful for proof-reading.

(Although I generate http://www.ietf.org/about/process-docs.html using XML2RFC;
it looks different because of the IETF style sheet.)

#287: missing line breaks in list in NROFF output

Comment (by tony@att.com):

 I believe that using .br would work fine. And if you need a blank line
 between, then use .sp instead.

#287: missing line breaks in list in NROFF output

Comment (by tony@att.com):

 (I always thought that the v1 nroff code spent WAY too much effort trying
 to keep indentations correct and could have been simplified drastically.)

#287: missing line breaks in list in NROFF output

Comment (by arusso@amsl.com):

 I agree that .br seems fine. (AFAIK, the issue here is only when
 subcompact="yes", so .sp is not an option.)

#287: missing line breaks in list in NROFF output

Changes (by henrik@levkowetz.com):

 * status:  new => closed
 * resolution:   => fixed

Comment:

 Fixed in [1885]:

 Modified the nroff table output for PI subcompact=yes so as to produce a
 list, rather than a paragraph of run-together list entries. Fixes issue
 #287.

#291: Replace scripts option with entry_points option in setup.py

 setup.py uses the scripts option to install the xml2rfc script. Under
 Microsoft Windows this has the disadvantage that Windows is not able to
 directly execute the script.
 [https://pythonhosted.org/setuptools/setuptools.html#automatic-script-
 creation setuptools is able to generate an executable if the entry_points
 is used].

#292: subcompact oddity when turned on/off multiple times

 It seems the PI subcompact="no" is being disregarded when there is more
 than one instance of setting subcompact within the file (and some other
 condition that I don't know).

 Background: In general, the RPC uses compact="yes" and subcompact="no" to
 get a blank line between list items, but there are situations where the
 preference is to turn subcompact on/off within a document. In this
 specific case, the author chose to do that. (With v1, it could be turned
 on/off within a file. And I thought this worked with a past v2 release,
 but it doesn't work with 2.4.10 or 2.4.12.)

 Attached files:
 a) draft-jwa.original.xml (as submitted by the author of draft-ietf-jose-
 json-web-algorithms-40.txt)

 b) draft-jwa.stripped.xml (I removed all the subsequent subcompact PIs --
 and then the output is as desired.)

 c) sample.xml (It works fine in a short doc with a couple instances of
 turning it on/off.)

 In the text output from (a):

 {{{
   1. Generate a digital signature of the JWS Signing Input using ECDSA
       P-256 SHA-256 with the desired private key. The output will be
       the pair (R, S), where R and S are 256 bit unsigned integers.
   2. Turn R and S into octet sequences in big endian order, with each
       array being be 32 octets long. The octet sequence
       representations MUST NOT be shortened to omit any leading zero
       octets contained in the values.
   3. Concatenate the two octet sequences in the order R and then S.
       (Note that many ECDSA implementations will directly produce this
       concatenation as their output.)
   4. The resulting 64 octet sequence is the JWS Signature value.
 }}}

 Desired output (and as it was in draft-ietf-jose-json-web-
 algorithms-40.txt -- which presumably was made using draft-
 jwa.original.xml )

 {{{
