Hi folks,

Here is a new version (-01) of draft-mohali-dispatch-originating-cdiv-par=
ameter "P-Served-User Header Field Parameter for Originating CDIV session c=
ase in Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)".

The purpose of this draft is to register a SIP parameter defined in 3GPP fo=
r the P-Served-User header field defined as per RFC5502.

In this new version:

- incorrect statements are corrected

- some text has been improved for a better understanding

URL: https://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-mohali-dispatch-=
originating-cdiv-parameter-01.txt

Diff: https://www.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=3Ddraft-mohali-dispatch-o=
riginating-cdiv-parameter-01

Comments are welcomed!

Best Regards,

Marianne Mohali

RFC 7462 defines a series of "alert" URNs that can be used in the SIP
Alert-Info header. When a UA receives an INVITE or a provisional
response to an INVITE, the UA should process the "alert" URNs to
determine which signal (ring tone or ringback tone) to present to the
user. RFC 7462 provides normative constraints on the UA's processing of
the URNs. It also provides a non-normative algorithm that a UA can use
which satisfies the constraints.

But the algorithm in RFC 7462 is complicated and we know of no
implementations.

I've worked out how to construct a finite state machine to process the
'alert' URNs in an Alert-Info header to select one of the alerting
signals of a UA. Once you fix the set of signals and their meanings
(the URNs that the signal indicates), there's an algorithm to construct
the FSM, and it ensures that FSM satisfies the rules in RFC 7462.

I've written a draft to describe the process in detail. The draft also
points to an implementation of the algorithm in Python, so people can
try out this method and see how it works for them.

I believe that this draft (or something very much like it) is necessary
and sufficient to make RFC 7462 usable in practice.

I'd like to hear any feedback you have.

Dale

Abstract:
The "alert" namespace of uniform resource names (URNs) can be used in
the Alert-Info header field of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)
requests and responses to inform a VoIP telephone (user agent) of the
characteristics of the call that the user agent has originated or
terminated. Based on the URNs in the Alert-Info header field, the
user agent must select an the best available signal to present to its
user to indicate the characteristics of the call. This document
describes a method by which a user agent's designer can, based on the
user agent's signals and their meanings, constructing a finite state
machine (FSM) to process the URNs to select a signal in a way that
obeys the restrictions given in the definition of the "alert" URN
namespace. In many situations, the resulting FSM is simpler and
faster than the previously described selection algorithm.

Hi all,

The wiki has been updated with the dates for IETF-97 and topics from
IETF-96:
https://trac.tools.ietf.org/wg/dispatch/trac/wiki

The dates are as follows:

   - October 3, 2016. Cutoff date to notify the chairs/DISPATCH WG of plans
   to submit a proposal.

   - October 10, 2016. Cutoff for charter proposals for topics.

   - October 17, 2016. Announcement of topics that have been dispatched for
   IETF-97.

   - October 31, 2016. Draft deadline.

As a reminder, it's extremely helpful if folks would use the usual draft
naming convention of including the WG name (i.e., - dispatch) in the
document name. That makes it a whole lot easier for us to make sure we're
not missing documents and to find links to the docs for the wiki, minutes,
etc.

Regards,
Mary.

Hi all,

As you may already know, TLS-level compression will be removed from the
next version of the TLS protocol (currently named TLS 1.3) whereas NNTP
was relying on this feature (as we can read it in the abstract of RFC
4642, dealing with the use of TLS with NNTP).
In order to refresh RFC 4642 to be consistent with the latest published
RFCs about TLS, I suggest two drafts:

- one that defines an NNTP extension to allow a connection to be
compressed (inspired from the IMAP COMPRESS command defined in RFC 4978):
     https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-murchison-nntp-compress-05

- one that toilets all obsolete TLS-related stuff, in discrepancy with
latest RFCs and UTA BCP 195:
     https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-elie-nntp-tls-recommendations-01

In case some of you are interested and have time to review these drafts,
do not hesitate to send your comments.

For your information, Alexey is considering AD-sponsoring them. IETF
Last Call has been sent for draft-murchison-nntp-compress-05 today, and
draft-elie-nntp-tls-recommendations-01 will probably be also reviewed by
people in the UTA WG.

P.-S.: I've just seen that RFC 6648 deprecates the use of the "X-"
prefix in application protocols. I bet it should be taken into account
in the examples of Section 2.1 and 2.2.3 (X-SHRINK) as well as in
Section 7.1 of draft-murchison-nntp-compress-05.

Thanks beforehand for your valuable comments about these drafts.

I've looked at them, and they seem fine to me. Section 3 in the
Murchison draft, offering advice on how to tune your compression,
strikes me as premature overoptimization, but since it only affects
compression efficiency, not interop, it's not very important.

Thanks for having looked at the drafts.
Maybe Section 3.1 should directly begin Section 3 (dealing with
interoperability), and the current begin of Section 3 (advice of
optimization) be an Appendix?

It's not clear in all of section 3 whether the advice is based on
observations of how traffic actually compresses, or guesses about what
will happen. Do you know which it is? If it's observation, the whole
section can stay. If it's guesses, the whole section should go.

I ran some tests last year about compression ratios, and Bo Lindbergh
about the use of different flush options:
   https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/news.software.nntp/ZXrwlcAUMMM
   (thread beginning with Message-ID <n2d9ha$41r$1@news.trigofacile.com>)

Netnews articles are pretty similar to e-mails, so it is not surprising
to find a performance similar to what Section 4 of RFC 4978 (COMPRESS
for IMAP) mentioned.

When we say that "responses not related to article header/body retrieval
(e.g, CAPABILITIES, GROUP, LISTGROUP, LAST, NEXT, STAT, DATE, NEWNEWS,
NEWGROUPS, LIST, CHECK [RFC4644], etc) are highly compressible; zlib
using its least CPU-intensive setting compresses typical responses to
25-40% of their original size."

We for instance have:

LIST ACTIVE answer
Uncompressed: 1393931 bytes
Compressed with level 1: 394856 bytes (28%)
[...]
Compressed with level 9: 314809 bytes (22%)

LIST NEWSGROUPS answer
Uncompressed: 2564921 bytes
Compressed with level 1: 836486 bytes (32%)
[...]
Compressed with level 9: 718244 bytes (28%)

LISTGROUP answer
Uncompressed: 53793 bytes
Compressed with level 1: 20177 bytes (37%)
[...]
Compressed with level 9: 20329 bytes (37%)

NEWNEWS answer
Uncompressed: 474178 bytes
Compressed with level 1: 147513 bytes (31%)
[...]
Compressed with level 9: 128067 bytes (27%)

These are the most used commands in question, and the ratio is 25-40%
for level 1.
Maybe in the list given in example of commands, we should drop 1-line
answers that in fact won't save many bytes. We're speaking of 30 bytes
or like answers... And they are not compressed to 10 bytes, but as
often as not remain of the same size, or are 70-100% compressed.
Let's just keep LISTGROUP, NEWNEWS, NEWGROUPS and LIST for clarity. No
need to list all existing NNTP commands!

And for Base64 attachments, the result is not surprising:
Uncompressed: 13710605 bytes
Compressed with level 1: 10532602 bytes (76%)
[...]
Compressed with level 9: 10357010 bytes (75%)

> If it's observation, the whole section can stay. If it's guesses,
> the whole section should go.

We can then keep it in Section 3 instead of an Appendix.

Hi,
I received a proposal to charter a new WG. Proponents are discussing it
on id-event@ietf.org mailing list. Note, that at the moment it is not
clear whether this will land in ART or SEC Area, this is to be decided.
Please comment on the strawman Charter, which is shown below:

 Chairs:
     TBD

 Applications and Real-Time Area Directors:
     TBD

 Applications and Real-Time Area Advisor:
     TBD

 Mailing Lists:
     General Discussion: id-event@ietf.org
     To Subscribe: https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/id-event
     Archive:
     https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/browse/id-event/

Description of Working Group:

Many identity related protocols require a mechanism to convey messages
between
systems in order to prevent or mitigate security risks, or to provide
out-of-band information as necessary. For example, an OAuth
authorization
server, having received a token revocation request (RFC7009) may need to
inform affected resource servers; a cloud provider may wish to inform
another
cloud provider of suspected fraudulent use of identity information; an
identity provider may wish to signal a session logout to a relying
party.

It is expected that several identity and security working groups and
organizations will use Identity Event Tokens to describe area-specific
events such as: SCIM Provisioning Events, OpenID RISC Events, and
OpenID Connect Backchannel Logout, among others.

The Security Event working group will produce a standards-track Event
Token
specification that includes:
 - A JWT extension for expressing security events
 - A syntax that enables event-specific data to be conveyed
This Event Token specification will be event transport independent.

The working group will also develop a simple standards-track Event
Delivery
specification that includes:
 - A method for delivering events using HTTP POST (push)
 - Metadata for describing event feeds
 - Methods for subscribing to and managing event feeds
 - Methods for validating event feed subscriptions

Goals and Milestones:
October 2016 - Initial adoption of event token and event delivery
  drafts
February 2017 - WG last call of event token draft
April 2017 - Event token draft to IESG as a proposed standard
July 2017 - WG last call of event delivery draft
September 2017 - Event delivery draft to IESG as a proposed standard
November 2017 - Work completed; discuss rechartering if needed

Hi,

Concerning draft-holmberg-dispatch-received-realm-03 section 5.5.2, the
Via parameter syntax does not appear to be backward compatible with
via-extension which is a generic-param. To remain backward compatible,
the received-realm value would need to fall within the syntax of token,
host, or quoted-string.

Thanks,
Brett

Hi Brett,

You are correct. The intention was to define the whole value as quoted-stri=
ng, so the LDQUOT shall be in front of operator-id.

I'll correct it in the next version.

Thanks!

Regards,

Christer

Hi,

Concerning draft-holmberg-dispatch-received-realm-03 section 5.5.2, the Via=
parameter syntax does not appear to be backward compatible with via-extens=
ion which is a generic-param. To remain backward compatible, the received-=
realm value would need to fall within the syntax of token, host, or quoted-=
string.

Thanks,
Brett

I support this I-D. For me, it is in the spirit of RFC 2543 and RFC 3261.
As a nit: this I-D reproduces ABNF from RFC 5502. The text should say that ABNFs are informative, not normative; RFC 5502 is normative.

In collaboration with members of the Robocall Strike Force (https://www.fcc=
.gov/news-events/events/2016/08/first-meeting-industry-led-robocall-strike-=
force), I have submitted two I-D's:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-schulzrinne-dispatch-status-unwanted=
/

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-schulzrinne-dispatch-callinfo-spam/

that fill in operational needs for dealing with SIP spam. The first defines=
a new status code (666) that users can use to mark unwanted calls, either =
as a response code to an INVITE or in a Reason header in a BYE response. (T=
his will likely be supplemented in practice by API-based mechanisms for pos=
t-call spam reports.)

The second defines a set of Call-Info parameters that allow the carrier or =
other UE-trusted SIP entity in the path to indicate the spam probability, t=
ype of call and other related information that will allow the UE and user t=
o make better call handling decisions.

This complements the 'verstat' work being submitted to 3GPP (by others), fo=
r indicating the level of trust in the From/PAI tel URI.

Both are obviously pretty drafty, so comments on the approach are particula=
rly appreciated.

Audacious move choosing 666!

I want to verify that it is crystal clear that the meaning of this
response is that requests (often calls) from this caller are unwanted,
rather than simply that this *call* is unwanted.

At the time of call initiation there is of course little else that the
callee has to go on to reject the call this way. But I guess I could
imagine a UA that is intended only for originating calls, that considers
*all* incoming calls to be undesirable, regardless of caller. In that
case it would be bad to use 666 if that then put the caller on a list as
an undesirable caller.

And of course this code can be used with Reason to signify displeasure
with a call after it has been answered. At that point there may be a
wider range of reasons to object to the call. E.g., the subject matter
is objectionable, the caller is identifiable and objectionable even
though coming from a usually unobjectionable number, etc.

It isn't necessary to boil the ocean here covering all the cases. I just
want to make certain the all those using this code have a common
understanding of the semantics.

	Thanks,
	Paul

Yes, this is meant to indicate that the calls from that caller are unwanted=
. Given that numbers get re-assigned and that sometimes people hit the wron=
g button (such as hitting the "spam" button in gmail when I meant delete), =
this should presumably be treated more as a statistical indicator. I didn't=
want to be too prescriptive here; for example, it is possible that such ca=
lls, if they are not yet on a global blacklist, end up in the equivalent of=
the email spam folder, i.e., voicemail, or that, again mimicking email, yo=
u get a text message indicating calls that got this treatment, just in case=
 this was a mistake.

I'll add a sentence about the caller being unwanted.

I had considered adding Call-Info "type" information to allow the called pa=
rty to provide more information, but I doubt that most users will want to m=
ake in-depth selections of the nature of the badness when they just want to=
get rid of the call. More detailed feedback seems more appropriate for a p=
ost-call app-style response (and existing robocall filtering apps seem to a=
llow this type of labeling).

Call-Info can't be used in a BYE, so that method doesn't quite work.

My inclination is to keep it simple for now, and consider adding more struc=
tured information as a parameter separately and later if there's need.

        Thanks,
        Paul

I just want to ensure that all the users of this are on the same page
regarding its meaning. How it is institutionalized is more important
than what the exact wording is in this document. Users are going to push
a button on their phone to reject the call. (Probably the same one that
is there now.) What they mean and how that is used had better be in
agreement.

	Thanks,

I'd envision two hang-up buttons: the usual one and the "spam" one. Some th=
ird-party Android dialer apps already do something like this, and Nougat ap=
parently has a related feature.

I just want to ensure that all the users of this are on the same page
regarding its meaning. How it is institutionalized is more important
than what the exact wording is in this document. Users are going to push
a button on their phone to reject the call. (Probably the same one that
is there now.) What they mean and how that is used had better be in
agreement.

        Thanks,
        Paul
