Subject: [dispatch] Request for input. FW: I-D Action: =
draft-pfautz-service-provider-identifier-urn-00.txt

As some of you may have seen from the proposed DISPATCH agenda, this
document is proposed for discussion. It is in a early draft stage and =
needs
comment and community input.

That said I want to strongly support both the concept and the direction =
this
draft is taking. It highlights and proposes a solution to an extremely
important problem in SIP interconnection among global SIP service =
providers.
The problem is who do you send the session to if, typically, all you =
have is
a E.164 number.=20

OK some of you would say ..that is what ENUM was supposed to do and
certainly no one wants listen to me rant on about ENUM anymore, but the
problem of number translation in SIP service provider networks remains =
and
is a serious impediment to global deployments.=20

There is substantial technical precedent for this type of solution. In =
the
North American Numbering Databases there is a Service Provider
Identification Code (SPID) that has proved very useful for SIP service
providers in deploying Network to Network Interconnection interfaces. =
The
very existence of this identifier has permitted interconnected SIP to =
expand
to nearly 30% of the US voice market according to 2010 data from US =
Federal
Communications Commission Statistics. This draft proposes to extend this
technique.

The elegance of this solution is that it does not propose any new =
protocols,
nor does it define what type of databases or class of users can use the =
URN.

As the draft points out, this concept has been discussed for some time =
in
various industry groups and has been discussed as part of the overall =
DRINKS
architecture. It is, IMHO, a "good thing".=20

Hi All,

Here are some comments on my review of this I-D. Overall, it looks to be ve=
ry well put together - precise and succinct.

1. Section 1: Introduction: The opening para states that "SPPP is bes=
t supported by ....". It might be helpful to state the rationale why these =
"features" are necessary for SPPP. However, this is more of a nit than a ne=
cessity - as the expectation is that whoever is reading this document is fa=
miliar with SPPP and its needs.

2. Section 3:, 3rd para: "Document Literal Wrapped style...<snip...<s=
nip>...is generally regarded as an optimal approach that....". It will be g=
ood to provide some reference(s) that support this. Not sure if it is accep=
table practice to have any non-standard bodies URLs be listed in the refere=
nce section (other standards organizations documents are ok - such as ITU-T=
 etc).

3. Section 3, page 6 - last sentence: SOAP and WSDL are referenced, b=
ut not present in the Reference section.

4. Section 4, page 7 - last sentence: HTTP is reference, but not pres=
ent in the Reference section.

5. (nit) Section 7.1 - last sentence of first para: Typo - "Thes" sho=
uld be "These".

6. (nit) Section 7.2 - last sentence of second para: Typo - "reasonab=
l" should be "reasonable".

IMO, It is good to go with these changes.

I'm looking at implementing an SPPP server with a MySQL backend. The obvious
approaches to an SQL schema cap the string lengths at some fixed boundary.

The protocol spec doesn't seem to have any bounds on various string
identifiers.

What might be reasonable numbers for the various identifier lengths?

This is a multipart message in MIME format.

It would be helpful to have some validation criteria for all of the data
fields in the protocol - and these should be then implemented in the Schema.

This would mean - string lengths, integer sizes and so on

[SA] Yes. The XML examples in this section are valid and conform to sppp
schema towards the end of the document.

[SA] In the examples, I am using the absolute form of UTC time (indicated
with=20
the 'Z'). Though a literal value where the time is expressed with the
timezone (as in +- 00:00) is a valid XML Schema 'dateTime' presentation
and should be acceptable. Having said that, I think use of local time
should be discouraged since this forces the consumer to make an assumption
about the timezone that will lead to use of mechanisms (or even
assumptions) outside the SPPP protocol. This can potentially lead to
interoperability issues or worse. Unless I receive further comments, I
will go ahead and add this clarification in the protocol document.

All,

according to the draft agenda posted here:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/81/agenda.html

we've been allocated two slots for DRINKS (Tuesday afternoon and Friday
afternoon, respectively). We will, however, just hold a single session
in Quebec, and hence return the shorter slot (scheduled for Friday). The
Friday slot would collide with VIPR anyways, which would be problematic
for many DRINKS contributors.

This would leave us with a single slot on Tue afternoon. As always,
please not that this is just the DRAFT agenda, hence or slot assignment
might still be changed.

See you all in Quebec!

Alex
