*2nd IMRA WORKSHOPInternet Measurements Research in Africaco-located to
AFRICOMM 2018, 29-30 Nov, Dakar, Senegal*

*Call for Papers/Presentations*
Internet measurements provide useful insights into the accessibility of the
Internet (e.g. coverage of WiFi and cellular networks), performance (e.g.
Internet throughput and latency) and Internet usage. Internet development
campaigners, national regulators, and policy makers in the developing
regions are recognising the crucial role that Internet measurement data
can play in facilitating evidence-based policy-making and regulation. Given
that the Internet ecosystem comprises a diversity of stakeholders and
service providers it is difficult for any other single entity to access all
of Internet topology data without the cooperation of the Internet
community. For this reason, appropriate acquisition of Internet data
requires a variety of cooperative research methods, including wide
distribution of Internet probes for technical measurements, located in
diverse locations and networks, as well as region-specific techniques and
demand-side surveys on Internet access and use.

The aim of the workshop is to facilitate discussions around mechanisms and
challenges of measuring Africa=E2=80=99s Internet; to evaluate the breadth =
of
Internet measurements research and to formulate strategic directions for
such research in Africa; and to initiate and accelerate collaboration among
Africa=E2=80=99s Internet measurements researchers.

The workshop is calling for high-quality papers that are focused on
Internet measurements research in Africa. Papers are invited on topics
related to tools, methods and analysis of:

End-to-end Internet performance metrics
Internet topology characteristics, including peering and routing
Application-level performance, including DNS, Web, CDNs, Cloud Computing
Physical layer performance measurements, including for TVWS, WiFi, and 3G/4=
G
Mobile and Cellular technologies
Detection of middleboxes, censorship, and content filtering
Data analytics for network monitoring, traffic analysis and network
Network topology and performance visualization
Internet access, use, and Quality of Experience (QoE) surveys

Dear NMRG,

IEEE Communications Magazine has started a new series on Telecom Software, =
Network Virtualization, and Software Defined Networks.

Kohei, one of the Series Editors, kindly asked me to forward the open call =
for papers (cf. below).

This series might be relevant to the work of the RG.

Best regards, Laurent.

                                              CALL FOR PAPERS

                                    IEEE Communications Magazine Series on
Telecom Software, Network Virtualization, and Softw=
are Defined Networks

ization-and-software-defined-networks)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------=
--------------------------------------------

The key role software is increasingly playing in Telecommunications is e=
nabling unprecedented levels of abstraction,
disaggregation, and programmability in network infrastructures and=
services. This gave birth to the trend
of "network softwarization" that advocates for network architectures that =
 separate the software implementing network
functions, protocols and services from the hardware running them.

Propelled by the maturity of technologies like network function virt=
ualization, and software-defined networking,
software-based networking is radically changing the way communicatio=
n infrastructures are designed, programmed,
integrated and operated. This enables rapid and innovative service creati=
on with easy deployment, and opens the door
for a faster pace of innovation in the networking and ICT industry.

Underpinning this global trend, this IEEE Communications Magazine Series ai=
ms at bringing together the latest advances,
technical innovations, open source projects, research, and development i=
n Telecom Software, Network Virtualization,
and Software Defined Networks. Contributions from industry and academia =
are welcome. Authors are invited to submit
manuscripts in all topics within the scope of this Series including, but =
not limited to, the following aspects of
software-based networking:

- Software-based network architectures/infrastructures, network sl=
icing, network function virtualization,
and service function chaining.
- Network operating systems, network functions, interfaces, deployment a=
nd integration with software-based control,
management and orchestration.
- Programmability of data, control and management planes.
- Performance measurements, evaluation and monitoring, validation and debug=
ging.
- Scalability, elasticity, resilience, maintainability.
- Safety and security.
- Experience reports from experimental testbeds, software-based networks st=
andards, open-source projects and solutions.
- New and emerging topics (e.g., end-to-end and multi-domain softwar=
e-based networks; Artificial Intelligence-
assisted networks; high precision network software, infrastructures and s=
ervices with QoS guarantees).

The IEEE Communications Magazine (ComMag) is a flagship publication of the =
IEEE Communications Society and the world's
top-ranked magazine in Telecommunications with an Impact Factor (IF) of 10.=
435 and a Five-Year IF of 9.119.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------=
--------------------------------------------

Papers can be submitted anytime during the year. They will receive a r=
eview process, and if accepted, they will be
published in the first slot available for this Series.

Manuscripts must be submitted through the magazine's su=
bmissions Website available at
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/commag-ieee. You will need to register=
and then proceed to the author center.
On the manuscript details page, please select "Telecom Software, Net=
work Virtualization, and Software Defined
Networks Series" from the drop-down menu. Manuscripts should be tutor=
ial in nature and should not be under review
for any other conference or journal. They should be written in a style =
comprehensible and accessible to readers
outside the specialty of the article. Mathematical equations should=
not be used. For detailed submission
guidelines, please refer to the magazine website for the list of =
guidelines that must be followed by all
submissions to the IEEE Communications Magazine: https://www.comsoc.org/com=

Dear NMRG,

We have received several candidacies after opening the call for new co-chai=
r of the NMRG.
I would like to thank all the candidates, I really appreciated receiving su=
ch diversified and excellent profiles, and the views shared on the future o=
f NMRG with very useful inputs.

At IETF 102/Montreal, Allison (IRTF chair) and I reviewed the candidacies a=
nd discussed about the next steps.
One of the conclusions was to take more time to select the new co-chair and=
work on an evolution of the NMRG (e.g. with a new/evolved charter).

So the process is still "on" and I will keep you updated as we progress wit=
h Allison.

Thanks for your understanding.
Best regards, Laurent.

Subject: NMRG - Announcing call for new co-chair

Dear NMRG,

Lisandro Zambenedetti Granville, who has been serving as co-chair since Mar=
ch 2011, needs to step down because of other professional commitments.

I would like to deeply thank Lisandro for all the great work achieved under=
his guidance, and the nice interactions we had and will continue to have t=
hrough the NMRG!

We are now starting the process of identifying interested people to become =
co-chair of NMRG.

If you want to volunteer or know good candidates, please contact Laurent Ci=
avaglia at laurent.ciavaglia@nokia.com<mailto:laurent.ciavaglia@nokia-bell-=
labs.com> or the IRTF Chair Allison Mankin at allison.mankin@gmail.com<mail=
to:allison.mankin@gmail.com>.

It would be also interesting to hear some words about your thoughts and pla=
ns for NMRG if you have some (what would you like to keep/change, for examp=
le).

Best regards, Laurent and Allison.
