Dear co-authors,

You mentioned that you had some implementations you even performed =
interop testing ? Anything hat you could share with the WG in order to
make progress on that front, before WG LC ?

Thanks.

Hi JP,

indeed we have. By the way, we already posted ROLL on this subject on Jan
20th (see http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/roll/current/msg06625.html).

The updates to the specification from -05 to -07 were prompted by the
results of the latest P2P-RPL interop.

This interop was carried out last month with INRIA's implementation against
Sigma Design's implementation, and a report is available over here
http://hal.inria.fr/docs/00/66/16/29/PDF/RR-7864.pdf

Experiments with P2P-RPL have also taken place on the Senslab testbed
gathering boards based on MSP430 and 802.15.4 at 2.4GHz, see for instance
the experiments documented in this report
http://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/docs/00/65/16/03/PDF/SOFTCOM-2011.pdf

The INRIA implementation is by the way available upon request.

Best regards,

Emmanuel

Hi ROLL WG,

This is a business-as-usual email to let you know that we will be changing one
of the ROLL co-chairs effective the end of the ROLL session at the Paris IETF.

After providing years helping to lead the working group, David Culler has
decided it is time to step down as co-chair. Fittingly, this will coincide with
publication of RPL as an RFC. I know you will join with me in thanking David for
his expert guidance. I hope that he will continue to be involved in the work we
do.

Michael Richardson (mcr+ietf@sandelman.ca) has agreed to step into the breach.
Michael is, in my experience, a stickler for doing the right thing in the right
way. For ROLL that means you can expect to be asked to follow IETF process, and
you can expect searching and exacting questions to force you to provide your
technical justifications for your work.

I look forward to the next wave of work consolidating and extending RPL under
the chairmanship of Michael and JP.

Thanks,
Adrian

Hello guys,

While reading MRHOF draft (for ETX metric), I identified some discrepancie=
s between the RPL and the MRHOF draft:

* The rank of a DODAG root according to ROLL RPL draft is MinHopRan=
kIncrease (default value =3D 0x100). According to MRHOF, the rank of the D=
ODAG root is MIN_PATH_COST (default value =3D 0)

* The algorithm for computing node rank is not clearly described in=
the MRHOF draft. Once the path cost for all neighbors is computed and the =
preferred parent is selected, the node rank is calculated just by adding Mi=
nHopRankIncrease to the smallest path cost (to the preferred parent path co=
st)?

Do you have any comments related to these issues?

Thanks,

t/#stephen-farrell
It has been there for 9 months, and we need to act on it, because
this DISCUSS is keeping draft-ietf-roll-of0-20 from advancing,
and that will keep draft-ietf-roll-rpl-19 from being published.

So to be clear, this chain of dependancies/references means that while
rpl-19 has been done for some time, it won't get published until we do
something.

Stephen Farrell will lift his DISCUSS on this and let us proceed if he
sees some credible plan to get useable security into the layer-3 of
RPL.=20=20

For a lot of you, you have assumed security at layer-2 is enough, and
you may never care about this mechanism, but I still need your
participation here.=20=20

2) We will need to provide, in the draft-ietf-roll-security-framework,
a clear set of security related *questions* that each applicability
statement will need to answer. In esssence, this is a template
that needs to be filled out.

3) A proposal for moving forward is to adopt/adapt MIKEY
   (RFC3830) for our uses.
   This has been proposed in:
      draft-alexander-roll-mikey-lln-key-mgmt=20

This draft needs to be resubmitted for the WG to consider it.
(A rumour is that it can be found at:=20
     http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-alexander-roll-mikey-lln-key-mgmt-02.txt
   )

The WG is open to other proposals, but they need to come in quickly.
We do not need to complete the work, but we do need to know what work
we need to do, and we need to update our milestones to include that work
in order that we can progress.

Dear Michael,

Our work on version number and rank authentication addresses some
layer-3 security issues that is not addressed by layer-2 security
mechanisms. In particular, layer-2 protection does not prevent a
malfunctioning or misbehaving (compromised) node from initiating the
reconstruction of the DODAG with itself as the root. Also manipulating
the rank value in DIO messages may result in the distortion of the
topolgy, i.e., a misbehaving node can appear to be closer to the root
than it really is. The mechanisms that we proposed try to prevent these
misdeeds. They are also lightweight, using hash functions and symmetric
key crypto as much as possible.

Our draft is available at:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-dvir-roll-security-authentication-01

We also have an implementation (on both TinyOS and Linux) of RPL and the
version number authentication mechanisms that we plan to make available
soon.

My colleague, Amit Dvir will be in Paris for the IETF meeting to present
this work and to discuss it further.

Best regards,
Levente Buttyan

Michael, WG:

My understanding of the DISCUSS on the security framework draft is that
it seeks to address the perceived lack of key management for RPL.
However, the second item in your post seems to go beyond that; is it a
set of questions to justify the use or non-use of RPL security, for
example? Please clarify.

Thanks,
Tzeta

I agree that your proposals are rather usefu additions, and I would like
to see them adopted by the WG.

However, the concern that the ADs had is essentially about how would
one bootstrap layer-3 security? Assume that we had your proposal in
place, we still require an initial set of symmetric trust relation to
use them.

The issue on the table is: how do we get that?

I agree that point #2 is almost a non-sequitar.
My appologies for this, I should have seperated it out.

It came out of a discussion thread which I think was not well archived.
(In fact, due to top-posting, I could barely understand it)

What I did was share three things with the ADs involved to confirm my
understanding prior to posting.

I think it is up to the writers of the applicability statement to decide
if they want to recommend layer-2 or layer-3 security for an LLN
deployment in their environment that includes RPL.=20=20
If they recommend layer-2, then it is, "not our problem".

If they recommend layer-3 or do not make a clear recommendation, then
there needs to be a clear set of questions. These are questions
relating to the knobs which are presently available in rpl-19, not to
things that we might invent to do key management.=20=20

We are making the same request in these documents for things like
MinHopRankInc, Storing Mode, etc.

draft-ietf-roll-security-framework has essentially setup a list of
requirements, which rpl-19 has tried to satisfy with some knobs.

For instance, should an industrial network operate with Authentication
Enabled? Yes/No.
Should they use KIM 0, 1 or 2? If so, what LVL?

draft-ietf-roll-security-framework should be identifying why we have
those 3 x 4 choices. (i.e. what were the security requirements that
made us decide we needed MAC-32/ENC-MAC-32 and 64-bit versions)

Call for Workshop Proposals

ACM SenSys 2012

Toronto, Canada

November 6-9, 2012

http://sensys.acm.org/2012/

The 10th ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems (SenSys
2012) is a highly selective, single-track forum for the presentation
of research results on systems issues in the area of embedded,
networked sensors. Distributed systems based on networked sensors and
actuators with embedded computation capabilities allow for an
instrumentation of the physical world at an unprecedented scale and
density, thus enabling a new generation of monitoring and control
applications. SenSys provides a cross-disciplinary venue for
researchers addressing the rich space of networked sensor system
design issues to interact, present and exchange research results, and
demonstrate their work in a hands-on research exhibition.

Workshops will be a full day event on the first day of the conference.
The ideal workshop proposal should focus on a specific area, be of
current interest, and be able to attract a number of high-quality
submissions. The proposal should be no longer than three pages and
should clearly identify the name of the workshop, theme of the
workshop, topic areas of interest to define the scope, names and
affiliation of main organizers/program chairs and potential program
committee members, the name of the organizing committee member who
will be the main point of contact, a tentative call for papers with
workshop deadlines and expected number of submissions and
participants. The proposal should also specify if this will be a
full-day or half-day workshop, and any logistical needs
(demos/audio/video projection etc). If this workshop has been held
before, also include its history (number of submissions, number of
accepted papers, and number of attendees).

Please send proposals in PDF format by March 23rd, 2012, 12:00
midnight EST, to the workshop chair, Bodhi Priyantha at
bodhip@microsoft.com

We are planning to submit an updated version of the RPL-MIB
<http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-sehgal-roll-rpl-mib-02>.

Our goal is to narrow down the number of marked issues but we will
likely continue to have some open issues left where WG input likely
will help us. So if there is time, we like to use some of it.

Yes, how exactly is MinHopRankIncrease used for rank calculation in MRHOF?

In the case of using the ETX metric, could it be something like the
following:
my_rank = cur_min_path_cost = parent_rank + (MinHopRankIncrease * {ETX
of link with parent})
Where MinHopRankIncrease = 128.

Please could someone clarify.
