Dear all,

Just a few words to tell you that I really enjoyed forming and co-chairing =
ROLL for 5 years.
I would like to sincerely thank Adrian, and all other active contributors o=
f the WG and
there are quite a few ! As a WG we can be proud of the work achieved so far=
 with=20
millions of nodes running RPL and dozens of implementations, and there is m=
uch=20
more to do :-) ! Thanks also to Michael who so smoothly stepped in as co-ch=
air quite
some time ago now, and I have no doubt that Ines will be an outstanding WG =
co-chair.
As pointed out by Adrian, I suggested to step down as co-chair (lack of tim=
e ...) since
I have been focussing on other technologies, still related to IoT. See you =
soon.

Cheers.

JP.

Dear roll folks, especially for the chairs:

Let me introduce my issue (again). I would appreciate if I can have some comments on the idea or suggestion for alternate approaches.

The issue I have is how to deploy a mesh network over even larger network, maybe up to 10,000 nodes, with very low application traffic. At the same time, we need communication channels for relatively-low latency (few seconds) broadcast for commanding and enough reliable broadcast file transfer. The draft draft-doi-roll-mpl-nan-requirements-00 introduces the requirement.

For the objective, MPL seems to be the only choice for us. But it lacks some functionarities for operation and management. One of the spec we need is to configure and/or update MPL forwarder after deployment. My proposal for configuration and re-configuration is DHCPv6 option: http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-doi-roll-mpl-parameter-configuration-03

I expect this would be a part of a ZigBee profile. I would appreciate if the WG can discuss the topic as WG item.

Best Regards,

Yusuke

Dear roll folks, especially for the chairs:<br>

Let me introduce my issue (again). I would appreciate if I can have some co=

The issue I have is how to deploy a mesh network over even larger network, =
maybe up to 10,000 nodes, with very low application traffic. At the same ti=
me, we need communication channels for relatively-low latency (few seconds)=
broadcast for commanding and enough reliable broadcast file transfer. The =
draft draft-doi-roll-mpl-nan-<u></u>requirements-00 introduces the requirem=

For the objective, MPL seems to be the only choice for us. But it lacks som=

to configure and/or update MPL forwarder after deployment. My proposal for =

Let me describe little bit more on this topic.

The following issues are what I need to solve.

1) MPL configuration and reconfiguration
  - New domains may appear after deployment
  - Existing domain configuration may be changed
  - Of course, it should be scalable
(Peter suggested me to use SNMP, but we're going to scale out up to 10k)

2) Management I/F of MPL nodes, especially, seeds.
  - MIBs? Netconf? CoAP???
  - How many 'active transmitting data messages'? for rate control

I did preliminary analysis on MPL reconfiguration after ML discussion two-months ago, and now nearly-confident that the only problem is unbalanced transmission and almost no message will be lost just because of parameter update. Timers for running transmissions can be 'reset' as if there are some inconsistency detected, just after parameter update.

Here's list of parameters and expected effects after reset. Assumption is the forwarder is the only one with the updated parameter set:

PROACTIVE_FORWARDING false->true:
the forwarder is almost always have to send the first data messages

PROACTIVE_FORWARDING true->false:
the forwarder will not send the data message at the first interval

SEED_SET_ENTRY_LIFETIME increased:
the forwarder will continue to keep old data message and bitmap, if
there are some transmission happend after neighbor's expiry and
before the node's expiry, the forwarder may need to send old messages
  again (should not happen frequently)

SEED_SET_ENTRY_LIFETIME decreased:
vice versa, the forwaeder may receive old messages.

IMIN, IMAX decreased or K increased:
  more chance to send messages

IMIN, IMAX increased or K decreased:
  less chance to send messages

TIMER_EXPIRATIONS incresed:
more messages to send. At the end of consistent intervals before
expiration, the forwarder may be the only node to send the message

TIMER_EXPIRATIONS decreased:
  less messages to send.

So, as far as I can recognize, parameter update is possible for implementations that can accept temporal unbalanced load of transmission. For battery-powered devices it may not be acceptable, but for power-supplied devices it should be acceptable as far as it does not harm the mesh network itself.

Regards,

Yusuke

p.s. I'll be on winter vacation on later this week, and many of you weel be in holiday week when I'm back to office, so please accept longer latency on communication. Happy hollidays!

	Pages : 40
	Date : 2013-12-15

Abstract:
This document presents a security threat analysis for the Routing
Protocol for Low-power and lossy networks (RPL, ROLL). The
development builds upon previous work on routing security and adapts
the assessments to the issues and constraints specific to low-power
and lossy networks. A systematic approach is used in defining and
evaluating the security threats. Applicable countermeasures are
application specific and are addressed in relevant applicability
   statements.

<HAT OFF>

Last night I posted draft-ietf-roll-security-threats-06.
The diff from -04 to -06 is likely more useful.

http://www.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url1=draft-ietf-roll-security-threats-04&difftype=--html&submit=Go%21&url2=draft-ietf-roll-security-threats-06

1) I believe that I have closed all of the comments that came up during
the security directorate review of the document.
Please see: http://goo.gl/A5uYb0 for the list of closed tickets.

2) I have been through the text, and changed "ROLL" to "RPL".
This is a document about security threats relevant to the protocol
in RFC6550, not some hypothetical future protocol.

3) A few revisions ago, I moved a </section>, and caused many sections
to get moved up a level and renumbered. That was an error, and I
changed that back. Teach me to read only the XML version.

4) where it makes sense I have referred to specific features or attributes
of RFC6550 which mitigate certain attacks. For instance, in section
6.2.4 explains how, I think that trickle mitigates many replay attacks,
as trickle's reaction to idempotent information is to do nothing.
Further, section 6.3.1. Countering HELLO Flood Attacks and ACK Spoofing
Attacks, I explained how the DAO-ACK confirms bidirectionality.

5) I wrote:
-> For distance vector protocols, such as RPL, where information is <-
and well, maybe I'm wrong. I just thought I'd check :-)

6) I have touched little of section 7, except for removing a chunk,
and then stopping... Does this section still serve any purpose
now that I've incorporated the RPL specific defense mechanisms into
   section 6? ("Countermeasures")

7) There is new normative reference to ZigBeeIP,
   ROLL-terminology,
   [RFC6719] MRHOF.

   non-normative to: [AceCharterProposal], MLE, RFC3610,
RFC6192 "Protecting the Router Control Plane"
RFC6574 "Report from the Smart Object Workshop"
   RFC6824 MPTCP
SmartObjectSecurityWorkshop -- was there ever a report on this?
   The Solace IRTF "proposal".

#135: Point to the Security Considerations section of RFC 6550

 Source: http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/secdir/current/msg04477.html

From: Chris Lonvick <clonvick at cisco.com>
 Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2013 11:41:54 -0800 (PST)

“The document is incomplete but it appears that the authors know where
they want to go with it.
I would recommend that the Security Considerations section point to the
Security Considerations section of RFC 6550 (RPL) and say that the roll-
applicability-ami document is a description of the applicability of 6550
to the ami, therefore the considerations of 6550 apply.”

#136: - draft-ietf-roll-applicability-ami - Add a section of the Security
Considerations for each instance where the RPL security mechanism are not

 Source: http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/secdir/current/msg04477.html

From: Chris Lonvick <clonvick at cisco.com>

“The authors note that other security mechanisms may be used, which would
mean that the security functions of RPL would not be needed. I would
recommend that a section of the Security Considerations be added for each
instance where the RPL security mechanism are not to be used. Each of
those sections should show how the replacement mechanisms will meet the
requirements of the RPL security services that are described in 6550.”

#137: - draft-ietf-roll-applicability-ami - Incorporate a model for initial and

“I also see that the authors are also trying to address the initial
deployment and incremental deployments, which is laudable. The authors may
wish to look at restructuring the Security Considerations section to
address these things through the FCAPS model or something similar.

“The document is well written and was quite educational for me. However
the Security Considerations section is incomplete and not quite ready.
 > This document does not specify operations that could introduce new
 > threats. Security considerations for RPL deployments are to be
 > developed in accordance with recommendations laid out in, for
 > example, [I-D.tsao-roll-security-framework].

This document got obsoleted by a WG document. I am not entirely sure
whether this is intended to be draft-ietf-roll-security-threats or draft-
ietf-roll-security-framework. Please update your draft to point to the
 latest document.”

While this sounds plausible, this is not very helpful for deployments. Are
there any documents (maybe even research papers) that talk about different
types of deployments and suitable security mechanisms for them?”

Pointing to RFC 6550 and describing how RPL security services described
there can be replaced by link/transport/application-layer technologies
 would be helpful as well."

These sections need completing. Looking at draft-ietf-roll-applicability-

 initial keys and trust anchors.”

http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-roux-roll-mpl-eval/
was recently posted, with the abstract:

Abstract

This draft presents simulation work and first results related to MPL
performance evaluation. The simulation makes it possible to evaluate
MPL performances in the context of a large network. The simulated
network introduces 500 nodes. The general principles of the
simulator are described. Then reference settings are introduced, and
evaluation indicators are proposed. Finally preliminary results are
presented under the form of a few tables, that show the proposed
indicator values depending on some specific parameter which is used
as a variable argument. Among various results, the advantage of
using reactive mode for MPL is shown in terms of the capability to
maintain loss free diffusion in harsh radio conditions.

====

I've read the document, and I like the direction which it is going.
It would be interesting to have feedback from deployments about how accurate
the random placement matches real life: I think that real life won't be
random at all!

The ROLL charter hardly mentions MPL at all; so having an experience draft
on it, is neither here nor there.

** May I ask what the authors intend for this document?

Do you think that the additional work will occur prior to IETF90,
and might be feedback into possible re-chartering of ROLL?

I think that it is very useful for the technology to have a rigorous
analysis of MPL like this, and very useful for standardization to have
some clear advice on setting the parameters.

Is the software used in this simulation available for others to play with?

I'm concerned that this is a particularly academic paper, and might get
the kind of peer review that I think it deserves as an ID (vs a submission to
a journal).

I missed the word "NOT".

Should read:

I'm concerned that this is a particularly academic paper, and might NOT get
the kind of peer review that I think it deserves.

(being able to site somethings elsewhere is always good)
