I was too late to join the call :-(. My apologies.

I have nothing big to report. It looks like ID Submission draft
got approved. I plan to resume work on the ID Info draft this weekend.

Alex.

Watching newtrk, I think it would help a lot to start on 'rfc/std
info' tools - infrastructure to help both ietf-ers and others to find
better information about standards track items.

From: The IESG <iesg-secretary@ietf.org>
Subject: Document Action: 'Requirements for an IETF Draft Submission
         Toolset' to Informational RFC
Date: Thu, 02 Jun 2005 09:55:56 -0400
To: IETF-Announce <ietf-announce@ietf.org>
Cc: Internet Architecture Board <iab@iab.org>, RFC Editor
    <rfc-editor@rfc-editor.org>

The IESG has approved the following document:

- 'Requirements for an IETF Draft Submission Toolset '
   <draft-ietf-tools-draft-submission-09.txt> as an Informational RFC

This document has been reviewed in the IETF but is not the product of an
IETF Working Group.

The IESG contact person is Brian Carpenter.

Technical Summary

This document specifies requirements for a toolset to support Internet-Draft
submission, validation and posting.

TOOLS Team Summary

This is the result of discussion in the TOOLS team and significant public
comment during IETF Last Call. The requirements and their priorities
represent
rough consensus among the participants.

Technical Quality

Brian Carpenter reviewed the specification. It has not been implemented but
appears to be implementable.

Note to RFC Editor

In Section 6. Overall Toolset operation:

OLD:

The Toolset sources should be publicly available (R152/b) under a
license certified by the Open Source Initiative [OSI] (R144/a), with
an interface to report bugs and request enhancements (R145/b). These
requirements are meant to enable the Toolset transfer from one
management team to another and to allow for public review and
contribution. To meaningfully satisfy these availability
requirements, the Toolset has to implement the required functionality
without relying on software with different availability conditions.

NEW:

It must be possible to transfer the Toolset from one management
team to another, to incorporate work by volunteers, and to allow
for public review of the developed code. To meet these goals, the Toolset
source codes should be publicly available (R152/b) and there
should be an interface to report bugs and request enhancements (R145/b).
Development should be structured to avoid lock-in to proprietary
platforms or backends. The tools team believes that developing
the Toolset sources under one or more open source licenses
following the Open Source Definition [OSD] would provide an
effective way of meeting these requirements at reasonable
cost. Care should be taken that the licenses selected allow code
from different implementers to be mixed.

Under Informative References:

OLD:

[OSI] "Open Source Licenses Approved by the Open Source
              Initiative", 2004.

NEW:

              Source Initiative, 2005, available at
              http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php

Ok.

Bill and I had a nice chat. I'll try to get started on an overall-
xml meta information schema draft this week, and Bill is hoping to
get the liaison statement handling tool deployed soon.

Hi,

I'd like to welcome Andrew Sullivan to the TOOLS team.

Andrew has offered to help with reorganising the IETF web site, so we
plan to pull down a copy of the site, and see what we can do to make
it easier to navigate and find things in, and then feed that design,
or individual improvement suggestions based on that work, back to
whoever the IASA selects to run the IETF website.

Good to have you with us, Andrew!

Regards,

	Henrik

Hi,

I've put together a proposal for an updated TOOLS-team charter
which includes a IETF website reorganisation proposal as a work-item,
as well as another item requested by Brian. The proposal is here:

  http://tools.ietf.org/charters/charter-2005-06-17.html

Comments are welcome.

I am somewhat more animated by the prospects of tools for
RFC, Standards, BCP, Interoperability, IPR information,
which I think is more narrow and perhaps has a different
audience than the general "improving usability of the
IETF web site" question.

Personally, I think many of the requirements that
NEWTRK is struggling with could be partially addressed
by better web-based information on the status of
IETF standards and related documents. But NEWTRK
is chartered only to look at "changes to standards
process", so I think that "tools for working with
web-based information" is probably in the domain
of this group instead.

Secondly, I wish it were in scope to look at IANA tools,
while we're looking at tools. The IANA registry
information is very hard to use and hard to
figure out how to update.

Larry

Hi Larry,

For your second point, it seems like the opportunities
to look at IANA tools may come, as a result of the Admin
Reorg., but we're not there quite yet.

For the first point, I guess all of the areas you mention
are in scope. Is there a particular tool you'd like to
take on, to specify or prototype, among these?

# Is there a particular tool you'd like to
# take on, to specify or prototype, among these?

Well, looking through the 'newtrk' mailing list archive,
I think I might start with:

"Means of reporting implementations and interoperability,
feature-by-feature:"

http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~llynch/newtrk/msg01109.html

but I'd also like to consider "means of reporting relationship
between RFCs and 'sub-areas'".

I hope the interface will include compliance claims in addition to
interoperability claims. You have probably seen my rants why one is
pretty much pointless without the other.

It may also be a good idea to add "implementation comments" or similar
interface.

In other words, we need a "feature-indexed" reporting tool, with several
kinds of "reports" attached to each protocol feature of interest.

It would be interesting to see how we can solve the
feature-versus-requirement scoping problem (each level may be important
depending on the protocol or even implementation).

Alex.

Hi,

Here are the minutes from today's meeting:

---------------------------------------------------------

0. Present: Andrew, Henrik, Bill, Alex

1. Agenda bashing

Nothing at first, then Henrik remembered his question about
   Dashboards. Added to AoB.

2. Comments on minutes from last teleconference.

None, really. There wasn't extensive minutes from Henrik
   and Bill's informal chat :-)

3. Welcome to Andrew

   * Work for affilias, registry company; database geek;
     offered to work on the IETF web-site.  Database replication;
Postgres. Worked in the PovRay group and on implementation
of same. Won't be at the IETF-63, but should be in IETF-64.

4. The new IAD is now in office - how this affects the team

   * Ray Pelletier is now in office. Henrik will send picture.
Communication with the tool implementers will now go through
and/or with CC: to Ray, rather than the IETF Chair, but the
IETF chair is still the AD for the tools team.

5. Action items for next few weeks

Are there things we should try to complete before the
     draft deadlines?

     * Henrik's IETF meta-information draft before 11th
     * Alex' draft before 18th

Bill has been communicating with IANA about data
interchange between trackers - should probably go into
     the meta-information draft.
     * Try to meet up in Paris.

Alex: The website work - will we be able to publish
anything about that? Henrik: Probably not - should
first do a prototype, then possibly a write-up. A bit
too early for these deadlines. Andrew: I agree.

Alex: What is the focus here? Look, functionality,
standards compliance? 1) Functionality 2) Compliance

We might want to see if we could get web designers
     involved for free, too.

6. Any other business

   * Dashboard. Does anybody know of Open Source
implementations of dashboard technology? Henrik has
looked, but not found any non-commercial stuff.

Andrew: not sure, but will look around. May have
     something.

7. Action item summary:

Henrik: Get first version of meta-information draft out
      	   before -00 deadline

Alex: Get a new version of the internet-drafts info
draft out before going on vacation

Andrew: Pull down a mirror of the website to work with,
and get started looking at how it could be improved

Andrew: Check whether there is some open source Dashboard
software we could adapt to the IAD's needs for
keeping track of the RFC editor policy

Bill, Henrik: Arrange to meet up with the IANA people
in Paris, to talk about tool information interchange
format. (Anybody else in the team who are interested
	   are also welcome to attend!)

8. Next meeting:

Teleconference Wednesday 6 July, 16:00 GMT (same local time
  as today).

Much as I wish that were true, it's not; I must have mentioned one of
my earlier projects, but I can't think of what is must have been
right now. I was and am involved in the current implementation of
database replication engines for Postgres, though. The only
production-grade one I'm involved with right now is Slony-I
(http://www.slony.info will get you there). We're currently working
out a multimaster and synchronous system. That's a little trickier.
