Folks,

I'm trying to produce a list with a sub-list (i.e. a nested list). I was
expecting the following output:

---- cut here ----
   1.  FIRST ITEM

   2.  SECOND ITEM

   3.  THIRD ITEM

          One parenthetical note

       Now, the subitems:,

       A.  THIRD-ITEM, FIRST SUB-ITEM (3.A)

       B.  THIRD-ITEM, SECOND SUB-ITEM (3.B)

       C.  THIRD-ITEM, THIRD SUB-ITEM (3.B)
---- cut here ----

However, what I atually get is a sublist that starts with "B" (rather
than "A"), as in:

---- cut here ----
   1.  FIRST ITEM

   2.  SECOND ITEM

   3.  THIRD ITEM

          One parenthetical note

       Now, the subitems:,

       B.  THIRD-ITEM, FIRST SUB-ITEM (3.A)

       C.  THIRD-ITEM, SECOND SUB-ITEM (3.B)

       D.  THIRD-ITEM, THIRD SUB-ITEM (3.B)
---- cut here ----

Here's the code I'm using:

---- cut here ----
<list style="numbers">
<t> FIRST ITEM </t>

<t>SECOND ITEM</t>

<t>THIRD ITEM
   <list style="hanging">
   <t>One parenthetical note</t>
   </list>

   Now, the subitems:,

   <list style="letters">
      <t>THIRD-ITEM, FIRST SUB-ITEM (3.A)</t>

      <t> THIRD-ITEM, SECOND SUB-ITEM (3.B) </t>

      <t>THIRD-ITEM, THIRD SUB-ITEM (3.B)</t>

   </list>
</t>

</list>
---- cut here ---

FWIW, what seems to be screwing things up is the "parenthetical note".
If I remove it, I get the expected numbering (i.e., starting with "A",
rather than "B").

Any ideas on how to get the inner "numbering" right (without removing
the parenthetical note, of course)?

Thanks!

Best regards,

That's a bug in xml2rfc.tcl; it works with rfc2629.xslt. You may want to
open a big report (-> <http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/xml2rfc/trac/>).

BTW: this is another case where a list container element would be
useful. It would be great if we finally get back to enhancing the
xml2rfc grammar :-)

Hi there,

I recently encountered:

       <reference anchor='BCP9'>
           <front>
             <title abbrev='Internet Standards Process'>The Internet
Standards Process -- Revision 3</title>
             <author initials='S.' surname='Bradner' fullname='Scott O.
Bradner'/>
             <date year='1996' month='October' />
           </front>
           <seriesInfo name='BCP' value='9' />
           <seriesInfo name='RFC' value='2026' />
           <seriesInfo name='RFC' value='6410' />
       </reference>

Note that it has *two* seriesInfo entries of type "RFC".

There are (at least) two ways to look at his:

1) BCP 9 indeed consists of these RFCs, so the citation is correct.

2) The vocabulary (<http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2629#section-2.4.1>)
defines seriesInfo as:

   ...The "seriesInfo" element has two attributes, "name" and "value"
that identify the document series and series entry, respectively...

Note the term "identify" here: RFC 6410 does not identify the document
(only part of it), so there's a problem here.

When generating HTML, implementations currently produce a hyperlink to
the first RFC mentioned, which of course is the wrong thing to do.

If we ever get to revising the vocabulary, we should think about how to
reference collections of documents...

Best regards, Julian

BCP 47 is another example of a BCP that consists of more than one RFC.
This is explicitly mentioned at the top of
http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/bcp/bcp47.txt, which is otherwise a
concatenation of the two relevant RFCs (RFC 5646 and RFC 4647). This
also seems to have been done for
http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/bcp/bcp9.txt. The problem is that this is
really quite rare. But it's still important to get it right.

Regards,   Martin.

Another problem related to this is that rfcmarkup doesn't handle it well
(it doesn't expect concatenations of documents).

Two comments:

1. This was a conscious choice at some time in the past, when people
started citing BCP numbers - so that they would get the whole BCP from
the cited URL. It is supposed to be done for every multi-part BCP.

2. As a matter of fact, the same thing was done for STD numbers,
see http://www.rfc-editor.org/std-index.html, or for a specific
example, http://www.rfc-editor.org/std/std5.txt. However, people
have never taken to citing STD numbers, probably because the
Internet runs on Proposed Standards.

There's an idea. It'd be great if they were in a git repo*.

* Actually, it'd be great if the tools team were to switch to git.

I'm agnostic on source control tools, but git works fine for me.

Well, sure, that's easy, but someone has to be the authority...
That's got to be... the tools team, right?

Alright, let's spare ourselves a flame war on that topic. If the
tools team hearts SVN, well, I'll understand -grudginly-, but an
svn2git gateway would be useful in terms of getting contributions.

still running tcl <blush>. maybe i will update tomorrow, especially if
it will get me through this one.

how do i get a list element that has more than one paragraph? e.g.

    <list style='format 2.%d'>
      <t>I can not do a close of the t after this or it will create
        a new list element. So I try
        <vspace /><vspace />
        But it does not work. I do not get a space between the two
	paragraphs.</t>

produces

   2.1 I can not do a close of the t after this or it will create a
         new list element. So I try
         But it does not work. I do not get a space between the two
         paragraphs.

Again: run your input through proper XML parsers. xml2rfc.tcl is very
"forgiving", which doesn't help finding bugs.

For creating a reference element for a subseries identifier that =
contains more than one RFC (for example: BCP 9 or STD 62) -- from the =
perspective of the RFC Production Center, this text is recommended:

  [BCP9] Bradner, S., "The Internet Standards Process -- Revision
             3", BCP 9, RFC 2026, October 1996.

             Dusseault, L. and R. Sparks, "Guidance on Interoperation
             and Implementation Reports for Advancement to Draft
             Standard", BCP 9, RFC 5657, September 2009.

             Housley, R., Crocker, D., and E. Burger, "Reducing the
             Standards Track to Two Maturity Levels", BCP 9, RFC 6410,
             October 2011.

In XML, as a work-around, the annotation element can be used to create =
that entry (the text can be copied & pasted from the RFC bibliographic =
entries on ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc-ref.txt):

     <reference anchor=3D'BCP9'>

Standards Process -- Revision 3</title>
	  <author initials=3D'S.' surname=3D'Bradner' fullname=3D'Scott =
O. Bradner'>
	    <organization />
	  </author>
	 =20
	  <date year=3D'1996' month=3D'October' />

	 =20
	  <seriesInfo name=3D'BCP' value=3D'9' />
	  <seriesInfo name=3D'RFC' value=3D'2026' />
	 =20
	  <annotation>
	    Dusseault, L. and R. Sparks, "Guidance on Interoperation and =
Implementation Reports for Advancement to Draft Standard", BCP 9, RFC =
5657, September 2009.
	  </annotation>

  Showing Errors (**), Warnings (==), and Comments (--).
  Errors MUST be fixed before draft submission.

  Checking boilerplate required by RFC 5378 and the IETF Trust (see

     Provisions of 28 Dec 2009, Section 6.b.i or Provisions of 12 Sep 2009
     Section 6.b -- however, there's a paragraph with a matching beginning.
     Boilerplate error?

     IETF Trust Legal Provisions of 28-dec-2009, Section 6.b(i), paragraph 3:
