Hi,

Is there a recommended way to whack in alternative boilerplate? Here's
my issue. I will occasionally write a draft that I do not want posted
into the drafts system, and want a way to signal that to the recipient,
and perhaps even the ID upload tool. Ideally I'd like to be able to
specify the copyright and some text.

Ideas?

Eliot
ps: yes, for the moment I've whacked my copy, but it's not pretty enough
to share.

The "private" processing instruction should turn off all boilerplate.
You can add your own using <note>s.

You want to use the upload tool, but not post to the drafts system???

It would just be to catch something that oughtn't be there.

To be certain, that really requires a standardized flag that says
"reject any attempt to submit this into the I-D" mechanism.

One of the improvements I'd love to see made to xml2rfc is in how it
handles widows and orphans. This is one of the steps that the RFC Editor
currently does by hand during their final post processing step.

Is there a list of the changes made by the RFC Editor, which xml2rfc
can't do?

That list would constitute a kind of work order for the package, to make
it possible to generate an actual RFC from xml.

I've talked with Alice and Sandy a few times about the shortcomings of
xml2rfc from the Rfc Editor point of view. But I've never seen such a
list committed to screen.

Dave, Tony,

The placement of page breaks is the primary one.

Over a year ago, we documented items that would be an improvement on =
xml2rfc v1; these were input to the xml2rfc v2 RFP. Since the =
development of v2, we've been testing it and reporting various issues in =
the issue tracker (20+, which have been addressed by the developer - =
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/xml2rfc/trac/report/6). After =
xml.resource.org posts v2 as beta, we will provide information on the =
rfc-interest list regarding the RFC Production Center's transition to =
v2. As we gain more experience with v2, we will continue to add issues =
to the issue tracker and hopefully get to the point that manual tweaks =
are not needed.

Thank you.

Hello,

I'm comparing the output of xml2rfc v1.36 with v2.3.5 (see
for yourself at:=20
    v1 version: miek.nl/downloads/draft.v1.txt
    v2 version: miek.nl/downloads/draft.v2.txt

I like v2 as it is fast! The line numbers mentioned below are those
of draft.v2.txt.

The ToC does not start on a new page in v2. (Don't know if that
is a setting).

The underscore settings of spanx elements, changed from _bla_ to -bla-,
I like the latter, but still its a change.

In section "Multiple paragraphs in a list.", I fake
multiple paragraphs in a list with a <vspace>. In v1 the new "para"
is indented, in v2 it is not indented (line 787).

If you look for 'A lowercase roman list.' you see that '<list style=3D"form=
at
%i.">' isn't supported (line 810).

If you look for 'An uppercase roman list.' you see that, "<list style=3D"fo=
rmat
(%d)">' in v1 displays as "(1) Item1" and in v2 as "(1 )Item1" (line 816).

'<list style=3D"format %C.">' is allowed in v1 (was a hidden feature, but s=
till).=20
It shows "A. First item", in v2 it convers to "%C.First item" and a warnin=
g=20
(line 850).

If you look for "List with a sublist with a paragraph above the sublist", y=
ou
get a nice indented sublist with A. and B. as list items. In v2 it isn't
indented and the listitems are numbered with a. and b. (line 878).

 Regards,

I'm using the experimental version of XML2RFC, and encountering some
problems with generated boilerplate. When I select text as the output,
it looks fine. When I select HTML as the output, I get

When I use the production version of XMLRFC, I get correct output on

&#8288; is &#x2060; or U+2060, WORD JOINER. This is a zero width
non-breaking space. It was introduced into Unicode in order to separate
the zero width non-breaking space functionality from U+FEFF, which
carried two functions, byte order mark and zero width non-breaking
space. (If implemented correctly,) its only functionality is to suppress
linebreaks where it's inserted.

The intent here is clear: Avoid line breaks in the middle of an URI.
That is in principle a good idea. But it is a problem because
copy-pasting said URI will not refer to the intended address.

The right thing (because we are talking about HTML) is to add some
style, e.g. like this:

<a href='http://trustee.ietf.org/license-info' style='white-space:
nobreak'>http://trustee.ietf.org/license-info</a>

(see http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS2/text.html#propdef-white-space and e.g.
http://www.quirksmode.org/css/whitespace.html)

Of course, it would be even better if the style setting were moved to
the stylesheet.

So this should be treated as a bug, and fixed. I hope you can submit a
bug to the bugtracker.

Regards, Martin.

...but then there is no whitespace inside the element, so the

Indeed. I have opened a ticket
(<http://trac.tools.ietf.org/tools/xml2rfc/trac/ticket/62>), but
optimally, everybody who tests this tool would do that him/herself :-)

The name of the property may indeed be somewhat misleading. Fortunately,
there isno need to be overly sceptical. The spec says:

nowrap
This value collapses white space as for 'normal',
but suppresses line breaks within text.

It says "line breaks within text", not "line breaks at whitespace", so
it should be what we need. Testing with the attached file in the five
major browsers I have at hand here confirms this nicely.

Regards, Martin.
