Ack.

That being said, as far as I can tell, the code in xml2rfc actually
tries to do the reverse: make sure that the URI can be broken across
lines in certain positions.

Just found at that there is a newer version of xml2rfc (version 2.3.9),
=66rom http://pypi.python.org/pypi/xml2rfc/2.3.9.

Apparently xml.resource.org still lists 2.3.5 as the latest version. But
the good news: 2.3.9 looks very good in my tests. In fact I only see
two differences:

* In version 1, a link like "XML of xml2rfc [1]", will be referenced
  in an "URIs" section:

    [1]  <http://xml.resource.org/>

  This is completely missing in 2.3.9

* If you have a "<t hangText=3D"Item to explain:"><vspace/>", the following
  text is put on a new line, but the position is dependent on the previous
  text. In v1 it is just indented 3 spaces.

Roman numerals works. Yeah!

I'm writing some text about handling of whitespace in a protocol, and
I'd like to include inline examples with more than one space character
in a row, e.g., a sentence that has "foo " with two spaces. In the
txt output, the two space characters get reduced to one. Is there a
way to control this in a <t/> element, or only in <artwork/>? (It
seems not, so I might simply remove the inline examples.)

I think your protocol description would be clearer anyway if you used _

Are you saying this based on other parts of the code? Or on how it
worked previously? Or because that's what you think it should do?

If the purpose is adding breakpoints, U+2060, which is explicitly a
*non*-breaking space, is definitely the wrong thing to do. Something
like U+200B, ZERO WIDTH SPACE, would be the way to go. But I still think
using such characters is the wrong way to go, because it breaks
copy-paste. Also, for HTML, I think introducing linebreaks in URIs/IRIs
is not a good idea. For plaintext, that's different; there's simply no
way to put an 80-char URI into a 72 column plaintext document.

Regards,    Martin.

As a matter of fact, this is a case where non-ASCII characters (in the
new format) might help (see for instance
<http://xahlee.blogspot.de/2011/11/unicode-character-for-space.html>).

Best regards, Julian

Hi=20

This may be an old topic but I scanned the archives and could not figure ou=
t how to put in references to non-RFCs.=20

I'm updating an existing XML draft but the external references were hand ed=
ited.=20

For external refs that show up in informative references: I found this sort=
 of works:

     <reference anchor=3D"r.8021Q" target=3D"">
        <front>
          <title>8021Q</title>

          <author>
            <organization>"IEEE Standard for Local and metropolitan area Me=
dia
            Access Control (MAC) Bridges and Virtual Bridge Local Area
            Networks. IEEE Std 802.1Q"</organization>
          </author>

          <date year=3D"2011"/>
        </front>
      </reference>

It produces this:=20

  [r.8021Q] "IEEE Standard for Local and metropolitan area Media
              Access Control (MAC) Bridges and Virtual Bridge Local Area
              Networks. IEEE Std 802.1Q", "8021Q", 2011.

I wanted to use 8021Q as the anchor but that failed. I found ref.8021Q work=
ed and I found I could shorten it to the above. There is an extraneous "802=
1Q" that must come from the title. However if I put all the text in the tit=
le it shows up in the XREF text location. Is there a way around that? I g=
uess I'm not using it the way it was intended.=20

Is there boiler plate for non IETF references somewhere?=20

Thanks,
Don=20

This is because (I believe) that xref links can't start with a digit.

You are not (but don't feel bad: many of us fudge here). An example of =
something that has an author, a title and (for extra credit) a URL would =
be:

As Paul pointed out, anchors can not start with a digit (because they
are XML IDs).

Otherwise, the "8021Q" is not extraneous; after all, that's what you
specified as title. On the other hand, you have lots of stuff in the
<organization> element that doesn't belong there.

Best regards, Julian

Don,

The citation libraries listed on http://xml.resource.org include =
references for non-IETF documents. After W3C, JSF, and 3GPP libraries is =
the "Miscellaneous" library =
(http://xml.resource.org/public/rfc/bibxml2/), which includes references =
for ANSI, FIPS, IEEE, ISO, and ITU documents, among others. Generally, =
these references can be used as a starting point and will require an =
update.

Example: =
http://xml.resource.org/public/rfc/bibxml2/_reference.IEEE.P802-1Q.1998.xm=
l

Potentially updated to:
<reference anchor=3D"IEEE.802.1Q-2011">

<date year=3D"2011" />
</front>
<seriesInfo name=3D"IEEE Std" value=3D"802.1Q" />
</reference>

Hello folks,

How do I get a page break in xml2rfc?

Alternatively, how do I protect a table from getting
a page break in the middle?
