#179: needLines needs work

Comment (by cheshire@apple.com):

 Is the needLines directive even implemented in xml2rfc-2.4.2? It appears
 to be ignored as far as I can tell. This is a pretty major issue for me. I
 make liberal use of the needLines directive to suppress awkward page
 breaks, and without it I don't think I can use xml2rfc-2.4.2.

#179: needLines needs work

Changes (by henrik@levkowetz.com):

 * priority:  medium => major
 * component: Version 2 cli => Version 2 cli txt

Comment:

 needLines is certainly supposed to work, but it's also possible that some
 change broke it in 2.4.2. I think the tests only cover the 0 and 1 cases,
 so test coverage needs to be expanded when I dig into this. Bumping the
 priority up a notch.

#184: Windows version of xml2rfc completely disfunctional

 I downloaded xml2rfc-gui-0.8.0.msi and everything installed.
 I have tried converting several files. Each time I get

 Parsing file path-to-xml-file
 Resolving entity... C:\Program Files\IETF\xml2rfc\templates\rfc2629.dtd

 and then nothing further happens.

 The same files convert correctly using the online tool or the old tcl
 version.

#185: ignored PIs

 "compact" PI has no effect on the text or PDF output (always compact
 whether "yes" or "no" or absent). Similarly "rfcedstyle" PI has no
 effect. Used online version as Windows version simply hangs (already
 opened ticket).

#185: ignored PIs

Comment (by henrik@levkowetz.com):

 Hi Yaakov,

 I have several test cases in the test suite where compact does change the
 generated
 ascii text; however I believe there are at least one ticket about the html
 not being
 quite what is expected. The PDF output from the online tool is simply a
 post-processing
 conversion of what xml2rfc produces, so it should never show a difference
 compared with
 the direct output, unless the postprocessing is broken.

 Do you have a sample document showing where you would expect compact to
 make a difference,
 but it doesn't? Could you attach that to this ticket?

 Best regards,

     Henrik

Dear all,
I run into a problem while using the PI "include" inside <artwork>.
The problem was present in the old (TCL based) version of xml2rfc and
it seems to persist in the new (python based, just installed) one.

I have something like

   <figure>
   <artwork>
   John
   <?rfc include="u.xml"?>
   the dancing hog
   </artwork>
   </figure>

where the u.xml file contains "1, 2, 3 prova..." The perplexing result is

    John

    John

    John

If I use <?rfc include="u.xml"?> outside <artwork>, everything works
fine.  Any ideas?

In order to allow you to experiment, I am attaching to this e-mail the
XML "main" file (draft-test.xml), the file to be included (u.xml) and
the result (draft-test.txt)

#186: "private" processing directive failing

 In the previous version, '<?rfc private="yes"?>' suppresses the RFC or I-D
 boilerplate. It is used in combination with '<?rfc topblock="no"?>' and
 '<?rfc authorship="no"?>' to produce non-I-D documents using the xml2rfc
 tools and elements.

 With the current beta version, <?rfc private="yes"?> appears to be
 ignored, at least in unpaginated plain text output mode.

#187: Crash as detailed below

Comment (by elwynd@dial.pipex.com):

 I have now edited this document to remove the overlong lines and the tab
 characters in the figures.

 This has fixed the crash.

 The revised doc is also attached.

 Elwyn.

#106: reference for an STD or BCP that contains multiple RFCs

Comment (by john-ietf@jck.com):

 Of course, that workaround then needs reformatting in the nroff and
 doesn't permit use of seriesInfo to generate metadata about the RFCs
 involved, and so on. So it is better than nothing, but definitely not a
 satisfactory solution.

#183: <eref> in <annotation> does not work

Comment (by john-ietf@jck.com):

 Curiously, if I understand the original design correctly, it would be
 better to say
   <seriesInfo name="Current version at"
     value='&lt;eref target="http://www.w3.org/TR/xml-stylesheet"/>'>
 or just
   <seriesInfo name="Current version at"
     eref='target="http://www.w3.org/TR/xml-stylesheet"'>
 or some such thing, but they introduce even more complicated issues.

 However, it would be good to think about this and get right, rather than
 just trying to patch.

Comment (by julian.reschke@gmx.de):

 How would that be "better" for any value of "better"? It's am abuse of an
 element that has a completely different purpose.

#188: Hang text not showing up in some cases

 The text output using the the beta XML2RFC differs from the output using
 the old version of XML2RFC. In the old version all the hangText shows up
 and in the new version some text is missing for some reason. See File
 http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-ietf-emu-eap-tunnel-method-07.xml, section
 4.1 for some examples.

#189: Spurious dot/point(.) characters in front of author names on page 1

 The (online) tool is inserting a dot character followed by a space before
 each author's name in the header of page 1. Thus:
 Network Working Group . Quintin Zhao
                                                           ^^
 Octal dump of start of output:
 0000000  \n  \n  \n  \n   N   e   t   w   o   r   k       W   o   r   k
 0000020   i   n   g       G   r   o   u   p
 0000040
 0000060                                                           .

#189: Spurious dot/point(.) characters in front of author names on page 1

Changes (by henrik@levkowetz.com):

 * priority:  medium => minor

Comment:

 Hmm. Interesting. This seems to be the result of providing an author
 surname attribute
 without providing an initials attribute. It shouldn't behave quite like
 this, of course,
 but I can see how it hasn't been caught by the current test suite. The
 workaround is
 to let the surname attribute be the surname, rather than the full name,
 and provide the initials attribute:
 {{{

#190: Exception thrown

 I'm trying to generate a txt file from of my XML. I'm using the on-line
 version from xml.resource.org. It is 2.4.2. I get an empty txt file. To
 see the error, I used "Use frames to show warnings & errors".

 The errors list ends up with the following:
 Traceback (most recent call last):
   File "/usr/local/bin/xml2rfc", line 224, in <module>
     main()
   File "/usr/local/bin/xml2rfc", line 209, in main
     pagedwriter.write(filename)
   File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/xml2rfc/writers/base.py",
 line 1088, in write
     self.post_rendering()
   File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-
 packages/xml2rfc/writers/paginated_txt.py", line 286, in post_rendering
     self.emit([''] * remainder)
   File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-
 packages/xml2rfc/writers/paginated_txt.py", line 164, in emit
     if self.page_length == 1 and text.strip() == '':
 AttributeError: 'list' object has no attribute 'strip'

 XML that causes that issue is attached. It generates on the old xml2rfc.

#190: Exception thrown when generating txt from xml

Comment (by tomasz.mrugalski@gmail.com):

 Minor correction: "It generates on the old xml2rfc." => "It generates ok
 on the old xml2rfc (http://xml.resource.org/old.html)."

Yes, I had the same thought. I hope to have time to take care of this
and a number of other bugs during next week.

Best regards,

#187: Crash as detailed below

Comment (by arusso@amsl.com):

 The RPC has gotten this error as well. Also, R. Raymond reported it on the
 list 24 July ([xml2rfc] bug in XML2RFC AttributeError: 'list' object has
 no attribute 'strip').

 The last lines of Elwyn's report are the same as the error we get (except
 it's python 2.6 on our system):
 {{{
 File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/xml2rfc/writers/base.py",
 line 1088, in write
 self.post_rendering()
 File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-
 packages/xml2rfc/writers/paginated_txt.py", line 286, in post_rendering
 self.emit([] * remainder)

 File "/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-
 packages/xml2rfc/writers/paginated_txt.py", line 164, in emit
 if self.page_length == 1 and text.strip() == :

 AttributeError?: 'list' object has no attribute 'strip'
 }}}

 It seems to be:
   * corrected by removing a line in artwork that is over 72 chars.
   * intermittent. i.e., not always re-creatable w/ the same file.

#169: extraneous \% before Section

Comment (by arusso@amsl.com):

 Bug in the nroff output: if the xref-created 'Section X' is at the
 beginning of a sentence, then there is only one space after the preceding
 period. (Should be 2 spaces after sentence-ending period.)

 Examples from attached test.nroff:
 {{{
 of different options for dealing with them. \%Section\03.1 discusses
 the problem of how to deal with file management of groups of files,
 or content collections. \%Section\03.2 deals with a related topic:
 }}}

 The nroff yields text with 1 space after 'them.' and 'collections.' when
 it should be 2 spaces.

#191: missing the \& to escape a period at the beginning of a line

 (This item was part of #118, which is marked fixed, but it seems the fix
 doesn't handle figures.) In the nroff output, \& should escape any . at
 the beginning of a line.

 Example from figure in the attached file:
 {{{
 . Object Data (optional, variable length) .
 }}}

 Should be
 {{{
 \&. Object Data (optional, variable length) .
 }}}

#192: in texttable, presence of \0 yields bad format

 In a <texttable> in the XML file, the RFC Editor inserted &nbsp; in order
 to get 2 spaces after the sentence-ending periods contained in <c>. This
 works as expected for txt output, but causes bad formatting in the nroff
 output (more accurately, the text created from the nroff).

 v2 converts &nbsp; to \0 (in nroff) which is a good thing; however, within
 a texttable it seems to cause a miscalculation about line length for
 placement of the '|' on the right.

 In the nroff-generated text output (attached test_fromnroff.txt), see the
 table in section 2.1; excerpt below.

 v2 nroff output (from test.xml attached to #191):
 {{{
  | Metadata | 4-bit field that defines the optional encoding of |
  |   Encoding | the Object Metadata field (see Section 7). \0Two     |
  |    (MDEnc) | values are currently defined. \0A value of 0         |
  | | indicates that the field contains UTF-8 encoded |
  |            | [RFC3629] text. \0A value of 1 indicates that the    |
  |            | field contains GZIP [RFC1952] compressed UTF-8       |
  |            | encoded text.                  |
 }}}

 Text from v2 nroff:
 {{{
     | Metadata | 4-bit field that defines the optional encoding of |
     | Encoding | the Object Metadata field (see Section 7). Two |
     |    (MDEnc) | values are currently defined.  A value of 0         |
     | | indicates that the field contains UTF-8 encoded |

     |            | encoded text.                                        |

 }}}

 (Fyi, v1 handles this correctly.)

#193: nroff output should have the same line breaks in URLs as text output

 v2 text output nicely places a line break in a URL (or long string
 containing '/'); would be good if v2 nroff output did the same. (This
 issue exists whether the URL is in an <eref> or just text in <t>.) Example
 below.

 A) v2 text:
 {{{
    File and append the relative URL. In this case, the segment would
    then be requested from http://surrogate.server.cdn.example.com/
    content_1/segments/segment1_1.ts.
 }}}

 B) v2 nroff:
 {{{
 File and append the relative URL. In this case, the segment would
 then be requested from http://surrogate.server.cdn.example.com/conten
 t_1/segments/segment1_1.ts.
 }}}

 C) text from v2 nroff (same as B):
 {{{
    File and append the relative URL. In this case, the segment would
    then be requested from http://surrogate.server.cdn.example.com/conten
    t_1/segments/segment1_1.ts.
 }}}
