#240: spurious commas in <reference

 xml2rfc 2.4.5, when processing the not-quite-published XML version of
 RFC7158, produces spurious commas in the the references list. Seems to be
 produced by <date/>? If someone gets to this I can get you the latest
 XML.

Unless I hear any objections, the anchor is going to become a required
attribute in the dtd at the end of the week.

Subject: [rfc-i] XML2RFC ticket #227 - failure for reference missing anchor
attribute

I find this to be a weird bug for xml2rfc. Is there any reason why the
anchor attribute should not be a required element in the DTD? If you don't
have an anchor then you cannot refer to the reference from the body of the
text. This would tend to indicate to me that the reference would not be
needed in any event.

Jim

I agree that the processor should behave this way, and if changing the
DTD is how you get there: +1.

That being said: are we also ok with making this change in the v2 spec?
I personally think it's a good idea.

Best regards, Julian

#241: format="counter" doesn't work for a texttable

 In an xref, format="counter" can be used to mention a figure or table by
 its number only. However, it's not working currently for texttable. (Also,
 v2.4.5 CLI doesn't give an error msg when it creates this output.)

 Sample XML:
 {{{
 A type extension registry for each of these TLV types with values
 as listed in Tables <xref target="table_IANA_packet_TLV_types"
 format="counter"/>, <xref target="table_IANA_message_TLV_types"
 format="counter"/>, and <xref target="table_IANA_addressblock_TLV_types"
 format="counter"/>.
 }}}

 errored output (from v2.4.5):
 {{{
    o A type extension registry for each of these TLV types with values
       as listed in Tables , , and .
 }}}

 desired output (from v1):
 {{{
    o A type extension registry for each of these TLV types with values
       as listed in Tables 1, 2, and 3.
 }}}

Jim, what directive are you referring to?

Dear group,

a question concerning the reference section, in particular the display
of author names of publications referenced by RFCs:
xml2rfc uses two distinct variants for displaying a) the name of the
_last_ co-author in the author's list and b) all other author names.
The last co-author in a publication's author list is shown as "F.
Lastname" whereas all others are shown as "Lastname, F.". Is this
inconsistent naming really by design (suppose it is, as it has been used
already in early RFCs)?
Could someone please detail on the rationale behind?

tia,
regards
Joachim

Xml2rfc and TCL both support this. I don't know of any specific
documentation for it.

Jim

#243: problem in HTML rendering of minimal references

 The xml2rfc FAQ at http://xml.resource.org/xml2rfcFAQ.html recommends
 (section 3.7) a construct like this for minimal references to external
 HTML documents:

 {{{
 <reference anchor="SDO-3GPP" target="http://www.3gpp.org/">
   <front>
     <title>3GPP Home Page</title>
     <author/>
     <date/>
   </front>
 </reference>
 }}}

 This doesn't work, however, in xmlrfc 2.4.5. If the above quoted reference
 is the ''first'' one in the references element, you get this trace:

 {{{
  File "/Library/Python/2.7/site-packages/xml2rfc/writers/base.py", line
 1108, in _build_document
     self.write_reference_list(reference_list)
   File "/Library/Python/2.7/site-packages/xml2rfc/writers/html.py", line
 552, in write_reference_list
     a.tail = ', '
 UnboundLocalError: local variable 'a' referenced before assignment
 }}}

 If you move the problematic reference down in the list, you don't get the
 exception (because a local variable "a" will have been set by one of the
 previous references) but the item is not rendered correctly.

 Workround in both cases is to include either a surname or an organization
 name in the currently empty author element. The HTML rendering is still
 sub-par (there's a spurious comma in the output) but at least it doesn't
 crash.
