I'm trying to deal with DOI:10.1145/1496091.1496095.

I can reference it by using

<xref target=3D'DOI_10.1145_1496091.1496095'/>

and have to put

<?doi include=3D'bibxml7/reference.DOI.10.1145/1496091.1496095' ?>

in the references section, where I also use

<?rfc include=3D'reference.RFC.4960' ?>

I'm wondering why I have to use the 'bibxml7/' prefix. I expected it to =
be
prepended automatically. To be precisely, I expected

<?doi include=3D'reference.DOI.10.1145/1496091.1496095' ?>

to work...

Hey Randy,

I browsed to
https://xml2rfc.tools.ietf.org/public/rfc/bibxml-doi/reference.DOI.10.1145/2975159.xml
and see that the generated anchor is <reference
anchor="DOI_10.1145_2975159">, so try <xref target="DOI_10.1145_2975159"/>?

If you don't want this to be the reference name, the web page says

The anchors are automatically generated based on the DOI or IANA table
name. The anchor may be overridden by adding a "?anchor=EXAMPLE" argument
to the URL.

and I tried
https://xml2rfc.tools.ietf.org/public/rfc/bibxml-doi/reference.DOI.10.1145/2975159.xml?anchor=yippee
and it gave me <reference anchor="YIPPEE">.

  Bill

There is no "<?doi>" processing instruction.

Well, nobody said that that works, right?

The PI is called "rfc", and the include needs the full URI. So

<?rfc
include='https://xml2rfc.tools.ietf.org/public/rfc/bibxml-doi/reference.DOI.10.1145/2975159.xml?anchor=yippee'
?>

should get you something that can be referenced with (ack Bill F.)

  <xref target"yippee"/>

Correct. Just guessing...

OK. However for RFCs I always used

<?rfc include=3D'reference.RFC.4960' ?>

instead of

<?rfc =
include=3D'http://xml2rfc.ietf.org/public/rfc/bibxml/reference.RFC.4960' =
?>

which I find a very handy. I can just leave out =
http://xml2rfc.ietf.org/public/rfc/bibxml/.

Because nobody wrote that code yet-

If <?rfc include> doesn't work with parameters, I recommend using proper
XML inclusion instead. See
<https://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/rfc2629xslt/rfc2629xslt.html#examples.internalsubset>.

Hmm...my Chrome says:

or application.

And this after much more than 2.16 seconds.

I do a reload, and get:

Check the status here.

When I "check the status" I see among other things:

> Pages	78
> File size	0 bytes
> Formal languages used	None recognized

Did click "Request full access URL"

When there, I could click on my name, get confirmation and the I-D was po=
sted.

So no manual processing needed. Just an additional confirmation.

I just updated to Firefox 61.0 the other day. The problem still happens
with it. But I don't see the problem with Chrome 67.0.3396.87 on Mac.

OK. But according to your above statement, it should not be written and =
the
RFC abbreviation support should be removed... As long as I know what is =
working
I can deal with it.

proper XML inclusion instead. See =

I don't need a particular way of reference. My position is that I =
provide the
logical links and the tool provides the output as preferred by the RFC =
editor.
That way I don't have to deal too much with the layout stuff.

Thanks for your help!

Randy,

I tried the following:

   <section title="Blah">
    <t>totally <xref target="JUPITER"/> tubular</t>
   </section>
...
 <back>
...
   <references title="Informative References">
      <?rfc include="
https://xml2rfc.tools.ietf.org/public/rfc/bibxml-doi/reference.DOI.10.1145/2975159.xml?anchor=JUPITER
"?>
...

and I got

8.  Blah

   totally [JUPITER] tubular

and

   [JUPITER] Singh, A., Germano, P., Kanagala, A., Liu, H., Provost,
              J., Simmons, J., Tanda, E., Wanderer, J., HAP.lzle, U.,
              Stuart, S., Vahdat, A., Ong, J., Agarwal, A., Anderson,
              G., Armistead, A., Bannon, R., Boving, S., Desai, G., and
              B. Felderman, "Jupiter rising", Communications of the
              ACM Vol. 59, pp. 88-97, DOI 10.1145/2975159, August 2016.

Is your <?rfc include...?> inside the references section? Location in the
file is my only guess about what could be going wrong for you here.

  Bill

good idea

 The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete
 your request. Either the server is overloaded or there was an error in
 a CGI script.

The server _is_ heavily loaded, I see. Will look at that. But assuming
that your laptop has internet connectivity, there should be no difference
using the web service compared with the latest local xml2rfc, which is the
one you have.

Bill's text should work; I've just verified that the reference generated
at:

   https://xml2rfc.tools.ietf.org/public/rfc/bibxml-doi/reference.DOI.10.1145/2975159.xml?anchor=JUPITER

does return a reference with anchor="JUPITER".

However, if you've already run xml2rfc with that url but without the queryarg,
it may have cached the result.

Please clear the cache with

  $ xml2rfc --clear-cache

and try one more time.

Best,

	Henrik

Ok, I've identified the issue. What takes time is the first time through
idnits processing. During the preprocessing stage, a very simplified
parser tries to extract all 4-digit numbers, in case they are RFC numbers,
and then goes and fetches xml state files for each of those to cache, in
order to be able to look up things like standards levels to check downref
status, etc.

If there is a lot of 4-digit numbers that haven't been seen during the last
24 hours, that is going to take a looong time.

Once idnits' cache is up-to-date, I see reasonable response times.

Now, with idnits due for a total rewrite within the next few months, I'm not
going to fix up the old code, but I'm sorry for the extra trouble this has
caused, and I'll make sure that the rfc state handling and the parsing
avoids this issue in the rewrite.

Best regards,

	Henrik

OK. I'm thinking that Firefox must have added a faulty optimisation
which has also been picked up by Waterfox: namely to cache a file
reference instead of re-opening the file, when auto-filling the
HTML form with the previous values. If the file is rewritten in between,
this might produce a garbage result.

I had a quick look for a bug report on this but don't have
time now to search further and/or report it.

Hi,

This is an automatic notification about a new xml2rfc release,
v2.10.0, generated when running the mkrelease script.

Release notes:

xml2rfc (2.10.0) ietf; urgency=medium

  This release introduces the vocabulary v3 text formatter. In order to
  invoke this formatter, use the regular --text switch for text output, and
  add the --v3 switch to specify the v3 text formatter.

  Xml2rfc in v3 text formatter mode accepts any valid xml2rfc input file, but
  since the actual formatter only understands the XML elements and attributes
  which have not been deprecated by RFC7991, it first applies the xml2rfc v2v3
  converter in order to transform any deprecated markup to the elements and
  attributes it understands, and then applies the preptool in order to
  normalize the input before it starts rendering.

  This is the first release of the v3 text formatter, and there are some
  known rough edges and deficiencies:

  - The current table output renders all table borders. This differs from
    the v2 formatter, and will be remedied in a later release. The reason
    for doing the first release with this rendering of tables is that the
    table layout options have changed substantially with the possibility of
    using rowspans, and the table layout code is much more complex than for v2
    as a consequence. With all table borders visible, the initial testing of
    the layout code has been easier than if horizontal borders were not
    rendered.

  - The statement of work for the text formatter coding does not include
    paginated output, and as a consequence the Table of Contents is much less
    informative than it would be if it was able to show the page for each ToC
    entry.

  - The xml2rfc v3 vocabulary (RFC 7991) does not provide 'align' attributes
    for tables, which means that the ability to center and right-align tables
    is lost. All tables are left-aligned. (Alignment of text within each cell
    is still supported, though.)

  - The index generation (using <iref> elements) has some known issues, which
    will also be fixed in a subsequent release.

  The v3 schema used in this release differs from the schema specified in
  RFC7991 in some respects. A separate document will be published with
  details about the changes: draft-levkowetz-xml2rfc-v3-implementation-notes.
  The issues leading to the changes will also be entered in the document
  issue trackers and sent to the xml2rfc-dev mailing list for discussion.

  Feedback on the v3 text formatter will be appreciated. Please send feedback
  to xml2rfc-dev@ietf.org or henrik@levkowetz.com.

 -- Henrik Levkowetz <henrik@levkowetz.com>  12 Jul 2018 12:29:39 -0700

The preferred way to install xml2rfc is by doing 'pip install xml2rfc',
and 'pip install --upgrade xml2rfc' to upgrade. If there are system-
installed python modules which pip will not upgrade, you may have to
use 'pip install --upgrade --no-deps xml2rfc' and install dependencies
manually.

The new version is also available through SVN checkout, with
  'svn checkout http://svn.tools.ietf.org/svn/tools/xml2rfc/tags/cli/2.10.0'

Regards,

	Henrik

Thanks for this, Julian.

Not sure I'll have time to fix during the ietf week, but I'll have a new
rev out as soon as I can.

Best,

#346: --v3 fails with python stacktrace on test document

Changes (by henrik@levkowetz.com):

 * status:  new => closed
 * resolution:   => fixed

Comment:

 Fixed in [2555]:

 Removed an assert that prevented rendering of document top when some
 elements are so long that the line width will be more than 72 characters.
 Added support for <note> with <name>. Added <xref> format default for
 included references. Added warning for <xref>s without 'pn' attribute
 (which can happen if the <xref> is pointing at an element for which pn is
 not generated (this is probably an error in RFC 7998). Fixes issue #346
