Hi,

As far as I know, mobility is not part of lowpan charter currently.
However, I have published a draft which will be discussed under
mobopts IRTF wg.

draft-chakrabarti-mobopts-lowpan-req-00.txt

Comments welcome.

Hello all:

In order to begin a discussion on IPv6 Neighbor Discovery
issues for Lowpan network, Erik Nordmark and I have published
a strawman proposal for ND changes for minimizing signaling
and broadcasting over the Lowpan network.

The draft will appear in the draft directory soon.

Hi Samita,

I don't have a negative stance regarding your document,
but as you know, 6lowpan is being severely considered
as limited code and resourse space. Your approach seems
to input at least redundant mobility function to the 6lowpan
node. If yes, I think it is beyond scope of 6lowpan at least
this time.

Let me know your view on this if I am missing anything

My draft on mobility is a requirement draft. I am not sure
what you mean by the approach for redundant mobility function.

Also, in my vision, 6lowpan nodes are mix of FFDs and RFDs as
defined by IEEE802.15.4 document.

I am not arguing that "mobility" should be part of "6Lowpan"
charter rightaway, but Lowpan networks or sensor networks
must deal with mobility in reality at some point.
Currently, I don't mind taking the work in IRTF wg.

Hello Daniel,

I have some comments/suggestions in your new draft: 6LoWPAN Ad Hoc Routing
Protocol(LOAD):

            1) In introduction you say that "the existing AODV protocol is
not suitable for 6LoWPAN", I think that in general case all the MANET
protocols can not be directly applied to 6LoWPAN, since they do not take in
consideration its characteristics (i.e. strong energy limitations);

            2) In the overview chapter you say that your protocol relies on
three routing tables: neighbor, routing and route request. But in chapter 5
you only described the last two tables. Are you not considering describing
the Neighbor Table, just because it is build on MAC layer?

            3) In chapter 3 you affirm that LOAD cooperation with
hierarchical routing is TBD, but do you think that it will be possible to
merge these two concepts? It seems to me that they present a very different
structure;

               4) How is calculated the link cost, just by "accumulated link
cost from the originator to the destination"? This approach could lead to
bad choices, since a path can have a good energy average but it could
present a node with low energy level.

Tiago Camilo

Hello Tiago,

>I have some comments/suggestions in your new draft: 6LoWPAN Ad Hoc
Routing Protocol(LOAD):
> 1) In introduction you say that "the existing AODV protocol is=
not suitable for 6LoWPAN", I think that in general case all the MANET prot=
ocols can not be directly applied to 6LoWPAN, since they do not take in con=
sideration its characteristics (i.e. strong energy limitations);

I agree on this.

> 2) In the overview chapter you say that your protocol relies o=
n three routing tables: neighbor, routing and route request. But in chapter=
5 you only described the last two tables. Are you not considering describi=
ng the Neighbor Table, just because it is build on MAC layer?=20

One of the main reason of missing the description of neighbor table is
that the table will be used in the hilow(hierarchical routing over
6lowpan) and described in the draft
(http://daniel.vsix.net/ietf/6lowpan/draft-daniel-6lowpan-hilow-hierarchica=
l-routing-00.txt).
The use of the neighbor table in LOAD is still TBD. We will update it
soon.

> 3) In chapter 3 you affirm that LOAD cooperation with hierarchi=
cal routing is TBD, but do you think that it will be possible to merge thes=
e two concepts? It seems to me that they present a very different structure=
;
Currently, we believe that LOAD should work cooperatively with
HiLow(hiearchical routing) due to its simple routing nature working
even without routing tables.

> 4) How is calculated the link cost, just by "accumulated link=
cost from the originator to the destination"? This approach could lead to =
bad choices, since a path can have a good energy average but it could prese=
nt a node with low energy level.
The way of calculating the link cost is TBD currently. We will update
the mechanism soon. Thank you for your all valuable comments.

All comments and feedbacks are warmly welcome.

Thanks and Regards,
__

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IPv6 over Low power WPAN Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Transmission of IPv6 Packets over IEEE
                          802.15.4 Networks
	Author(s)	: G. Montenegro, N. Kushalnagar
	Filename	: draft-ietf-6lowpan-format-00.txt
	Pages : 21
	Date : 2005-7-13

This document describes the frame format for transmission of IPv6
packets and the method of forming IPv6 link-local addresses and
statelessly autoconfigured addresses on IEEE 802.15.4 networks.
Additional specifications include a simple header compression scheme
using shared context and provisions for packet delivery in IEEE
   802.15.4 meshes.

Folks,

As you may have seen, we've submitted a new version of the IPv6-over-15.4
document. As it is now an official WG draft, it has also undergone a name
change:

OLD:
   draft-montenegro-lowpan-ipv6-over-802.15.4-02.txt
NEW:
   draft-ietf-6lowpan-format-00.txt are as follows:

I also wanted to draw your attention to one change in particular:

The LoWPAN encapsulation was modified to allow 11 bits of protocol
type (prot_type field). Because of this, the minimum overhead
grew from 1 octet to 2 octets. This was done in order to allow
more protocol types as the previous format started with a field
only 5 bits wide. Whereas growing it to 7 bits was possible in
the future, this would always entail 2 octets of overhead for the
longer protocol types to be used.

This increase in the protocol_type field was done in response to some feedback
about the previous scheme being very limited, and its extension being
somewhat complicated.

One can say "protocol X is not suitable for LoWPAN cuz of reason Y" for *any* protocol X,
given
a particular scenario. Besides, in the deployment model envisioned by IEEE 802.15.4, the
FFD versus
RFD separation implies that in a very common scenario, FFDs will be mains powered. In
this particular
scenario, only the FFDs participate in the ad hoc routing protocol, while the puny
battery-driven
RFDs don't (given that most of their sorry lives they are asleep, having them participate
is more
trouble than it's worth). All these need to do is discover a closest FFD in a fashion
similar to how
"normal" hosts just do router discovery, and leave routing protocols up to routers.

So in this scenario, I don't see such issues. This happens to be an important scenario
commercially.
It is an important one for ZigBee, which is, perhaps, why they chose a simple variant of
AODV
as one of the mesh-enabling solutions.

Folks,

Here's another example of a mesh for LoWPANs...

We've submitted a draft on AODV-over-LoWPAN as an initial stab.
The suggestion is to use a simplified version of AODV, similar to what
TinyOS did. I was told by some ZigBee folks that this is also
what they have done.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : AODV for IEEE 802.15.4 Networks
	Author(s)	: G. Montenegro, N. Kushalnagar
	Filename	: draft-montenegro-lowpan-aodv-00.txt
	Pages : 8
	Date : 2005-7-12

This document describes how to use the Ad Hoc On-Demand Vector
Protocol (AODV) in IEEE 802.15.4 networks.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-montenegro-lowpan-aodv-00.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-montenegro-lowpan-aodv-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-montenegro-lowpan-aodv-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

A simplified AODV is exactly what we've implemented in our stack that we
have running here in Invensys and in pilots. I wouldn't necessarily
characterize the Zigbee network layer as a simplified aodv, but more as
a modified aodv.

Hello,Kim=20
I have some questions/suggestion about your new draft: 6LoWPAN Ad Hoc=20
Routing Protocol(LOAD)
1)In the chapter 3, you mention LOAD may utilize both of the two device=20
types for mesh routing. I think, in order to reduce the energy consumptio=
n=20
of RFD, it is better to use star topology between RFD and FFD while using=
=20
mesh topology between FFDs ,and then FFD takes on the default router of t=
he=20
RFD!

2)In the chapter 5, you point out the data structure of the router table=
=20
entry. I want to know, due to the limit storage space, some router table=20
entry should be reserved if it is not use for a long time? Is it better i=
f=20
we add "valid time"?

 3) In the chapter 6, I consider, if the destination node generates route=
r=20
replies for all router requests, the entire cost will be larger. In our=20
scheme, the destination node instead of intermediate nodes chooses the be=
st=20
path ,and unicast only one RREP to RREQ originator. In this way, less RRE=
P=20
will be delevered, and less energy will be used.

Hello, Montenegro
I have one suggestion about your new draft: AODV for IEEE 802.15.4=20
Networks
In the charpter 3, you suggest, "only hop count is used to determine be=
st=20
routes". I think, over IEEE 802.15.4 networks, we should take the minimum=
=20
LQI of the wireless path into consideration. I use a function of the=20
minimum LQI and hops from the originator to the final destination to=20
determinate the best routers.

i'd like to caution people against this assumption. in my experience
there's a really strong rationale for allowing battery-powered
routers/FFDs and it woul dbe a mistake to rule it out from the get-go.

Lowpanners,

there are 9 drafts that are relevant to this week's meeting at the IETF.

Two working group drafts:

draft-ietf-6lowpan-format-00.txt
draft-ietf-6lowpan-problem-00.txt

Seven independent submissions:

draft-chakrabarti-lowpan-ipv6-nd-00.txt
draft-chakrabarti-mobopts-lowpan-req-00.txt
draft-daniel-6lowpan-hilow-hierarchical-routing-00.txt
draft-daniel-6lowpan-interoperability-01.txt
draft-daniel-6lowpan-load-adhoc-routing-01.txt
draft-daniel-6lowpan-sslp-00.txt
draft-montenegro-lowpan-aodv-00.txt

It is pretty clear that we can't cover this ground in the one-hour
meeting we have on the official agenda.
Since most of the authors and other interested people are here in
Paris, I'm proposing that we have an off-line meeting

Monday, 18:30, at the corner of the terminal room to the right
of the entrance (where the L-shaped table arrangement is).

We need to discuss:

What is the impact of each of the seven independent submissions on
the probable course of action?
Is the charter's assumption that we'll finish the encapsulation/
format first and then tackle security/routing the right way forward?
Are the additional proposals going to require changes in our current
standards track document (draft-ietf-6lowpan-format-00.txt)?
What do the authors want to have happen to the additional submissions?

Of course, no decisions are made in smoke-filled rooms; this is just
about maximizing use of the face time.
We will summarize the discussion to the list.

Gruesse, Carsten

Lowpanners,

given the mismatch between the number of submissions and the time
available, we haven't finished the agenda for Thursday's meeting yet.

Here is an outline:

THURSDAY, August 4, 2005
0900-1000 Morning Session I
Room 342 INT 6lowpan IPv6 over Low Power WPAN WG

5 Agenda bashing
5 Problem
    draft-ietf-6lowpan-problem-00.txt
10 Format
    draft-ietf-6lowpan-format-00.txt
8 IPv6 gatewaying and related changes
    draft-chakrabarti-lowpan-ipv6-nd-00.txt
    draft-daniel-6lowpan-interoperability-01.txt
16 Routing
    (draft-chakrabarti-mobopts-lowpan-req-00.txt)
    draft-daniel-6lowpan-hilow-hierarchical-routing-00.txt
    draft-daniel-6lowpan-load-adhoc-routing-01.txt
    draft-montenegro-lowpan-aodv-00.txt
8 Discovery
    draft-daniel-6lowpan-sslp-00.txt
8 How to proceeed
   (WG Charter)

As I said in a previous message, we do want to discuss some of this
offline, so there may be good reason for a couple more changes.

Gruesse, Carsten
