Hello,

I am working under the 6LoWPAN protocol, trying to implement a module
for scapy to be able to test devices. I was reading the RFC 4944, 4919
and the draft from february 2011.

In RFC 4944, there is a table with pattern for dispatch bits. the
broadcast dispatch is overwritten by LoWPAN_IPHC dispatch byte. And
the draft says nothing about mesh packets dispatch byte.

So... My question is....Broadcast packets will be contained in
LoWPAN_IPHC packets? What about Mesh packets? I didnt get it...

If you have some example packets, it would be great!
Thanks in Advance.
Cesar

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : Lightweight Secure Neighbor Discovery for Low-power and Lossy
Networks
Author(s) : B. Sarikaya, et al.
Filename : draft-sarikaya-6lowpan-cgand-01.txt
Pages : 12
Date : 2011-05-10

This document defines lightweight secure neighbor discovery for low-
power and lossy networks. The nodes generate a Cryptographically
Generated Address, register the Cryptographically Generated Address
with a default router and periodically refresh the registration.
Modifications to 6lowpan Neighbor Discovery protocol are described
for secure neighbor discovery for low-power and lossy networks.
Cryptographically generated address and digital signatures are
calculated using elliptic curve cryptography, so that the
cryptographic operations are suitable for low power devices.

The HIP IG met at the IEEE 802.15 meeting this week. The minutes are

https://mentor.ieee.org/802.15/dcn/11/15-11-0393-00-0hip-hipig-minutes-for-may-2011.doc

The direction is to leverage the new Multipurpose Frame and Information
Elements for carrying ANY Key Management Protocol, see:

https://mentor.ieee.org/802.15/dcn/11/15-11-0381-00-0hip-key-management-over-4e-multipurpose-frames.ppt

There was a presentation in the WNG session for a call for 802.1X support:

https://mentor.ieee.org/802.15/dcn/11/15-11-0400-00-wng0-802-1x-over-802-15-4.ppt

The authors were invited to join the current effort, as the intent is
generalization for any KMP.

For the next period there will be work to develop a framework document

Dear Bob-san,

Thank you for your long valuable effort on sensor network security.

Just a clarification;
I believe, IEEE802.15WG has just started to consider a new study group
to be formed in July, which is going to prepare PAR/5C (project scope)
of Task Group to be established, hopefully in November.

Kind regards,

Shusaku Shimada
Yokogawa Co.

Hi all

Fragmentation of RPL control messages has emerged as one of the key concerns when RPL is run over IEEE 802.15.4 networks. The submitted draft specifies a compression mechanism for RPL control messages. We have currently specified compression formats for DIO messages and some of the options that sit inside a DIO. Future versions of this draft may include compression formats for other DIO options as well as other RPL control messages. The mechanism can even be extended to ICMPv6 messages in general.

Thanks
Mukul

A new version of I-D, draft-goyal-6lowpan-rpl-compression-00.txt has been successfully submitted by Mukul Goyal and posted to the IETF repository.

Filename: draft-goyal-6lowpan-rpl-compression
Revision: 00
Title: A Compression Format for RPL Control Messages Over a 6lowpan
Creation date: 2011-05-17
WG ID: Individual Submission
Number of pages: 10

Abstract:
This document specifies a compression format for ICMPv6 RPL control
messages over a 6lowpan. The specified format is in accordance with
IPv6 header compression framework defined for a 6lowpan.

How does this compare to draft-bormann-6lowpan-ghc? It seems most of =
the gain will be from compressing out prefixes and zeros, which ghc =
should handle quite well.

I would be able to do a comparative analysis of two methods as soon as I understand the mechanism described in draft-bormann-6lowpan-ghc. I have already spent a couple of hours trying to understand draft-bormann. At the moment, I cant figure out how the compression mechanism (Section 2) works and how was it applied to the examples listed in the draft. I suspect the draft does not have sufficient level of explanatory text at the moment.

Thanks
Mukul

Hi Mukul,

as usual for compression specs, the spec defines the *de*compressor (on =
one page, because that's all that's needed -- ignore the experimental =
nibblecode part, as that doesn't seem to be too popular).
The spec does assume some basic familiarity with compression technology =

though), which you may want to look up.
As with most compression technologies, there are many ways to write a =
compressor, so specifying a compressor would be overspecification; of =
course, with the rather limited set of elements in the spec, there =
aren't *that* many ways of doing it.

When approaching such a specification, it is probably best to look at =
the examples and satisfy yourself that your understanding of the =
decompressor indeed generates the uncompressed bits. The annotated =
example on slide 38 of the Prague 6LoWPAN tutorial slides =
(http://www.iab.org/about/workshops/smartobjects/tutorial/Bormann.pdf) =
might help, too. Then go ahead and think about a good way (reasonably =
efficient, but not complex) to generate the compressed bits.
The compressor I used for generating the examples is a bit simple-minded =
at about 50 lines of code (the decompressor is 30 lines). It =
essentially runs through the uncompressed bytes, finding sequences of =
zeros and prefix matches in previous uncompressed bytes, and then (if =
both are the case) deciding somewhat naively which of the two are more =
compact; if none are the case, it generates a copy element up to the =
next useful match.

I you have pcaps of the kind of RPL messages that you want to compress =
with your spec, I could also simply run them through my example code.

Mukul,

I just looked at your draft in a little more detail.
Certainly, a purpose-built spec to squeeze out redundancy from a =
specific packet format will generally be more efficient than the generic =
compression I have written up.

However, the arguments in section 1.1 of =
draft-bormann-6lowpan-ghc-02.txt apply to the fullest here.
Since the HC spec needs to be understood by all nodes, it creates a =
powerful obstacle in evolving the subject protocol. The strong coupling =
between the subject protocol and the compression spec also creates =
opportunity for interesting interoperability problems.

As a distant observer of the ROLL WG, one thing I don't understand is =
why this is necessary in the first place.
As far as I understand, the domain of RPL is low-power (i.e., =
constrained) networks.
6LoWPAN is just one of the network types RPL will be used on, and =
redoing this work for every other type (that benefits from compactness) =
sounds wasteful to me.
Why doesn't RPL itself define a reasonably compact representation then?

I think that is a good idea. The reasons I targetted 6lowpan:

1) In my view, RPL over 6lowpan is a common case.
2) 6lowpan already has a mechanism for next header compression, that we could use.

Thanks

Dear all,

A comment on Section 1.3 of 6lowpan-nd-15, last bullet:

When a node moves away from the registered default router, it SHOULD first =
de-register by
sending a registration message with zero lifetime and then
registers with a new default router that is reachable

- it should probably say "moves away from _a_ registered default router" he=
re, because there may be more default routers? Or otherwise if there is onl=
y one that should be made explicit as a special case.
- If a node has >1 default routers, it could also de-register from one with=
out registering with a new router, or not?
- why shouldn't a node register first with a new default router before de-r=
egistering with the router it is moving away from? This ensures that the no=
de remains reachable. This works only of course in those cases the new rout=
er is already available prior to the move.
- finally, this text should probably not be under the "1.3 Assumptions" sec=
tion because it describes normative node behaviour in case of mobility, not=
 only an assumption.

best regards,
Esko

We submitted a new version of ND optimizations for 6LoWPAN, closing the =
two editorial tickets we had from Prague. In addition we made =
improvements to the tables at the end of the document (thanks to =
Carsten) and aligned the title to match HC. These changes do not affect =
implementations of the specification.=20

> Title: Neighbor Discovery Optimization for Low Power =
and Lossy Networks (6LoWPAN)
> Creation date: 2011-05-24
> WG ID: 6lowpan
> Number of pages: 60
>=20
> Abstract:
> The IETF 6LoWPAN working group defines IPv6 over Low-power Wireless
> Personal Area Networks such as IEEE 802.15.4. This and other =
similar
> link technologies have limited or no usage of multicast signaling =
due
> to energy conservation. In addition, the wireless network may not
> strictly follow traditional concept of IP subnets and IP links. =
IPv6
> Neighbor Discovery was not designed for non-transitive wireless
> links. The traditional IPv6 link concept and heavy use of multicast
> make the protocol inefficient and sometimes impractical in a low
> power and lossy network. This document describes simple
> optimizations to IPv6 Neighbor Discovery, addressing mechanisms and
> duplicate address detection for 6LoWPAN and similar networks.

Dear Zach,

Thanks for the update. Could you have a look at my comments that I gave in =
response to WGLC for ND-15 (see below)? I thought they were included in tic=
ket #134, but it seems that was not the case.

best regards,
Esko

1) Parts on multicast may benefit from some more clarification:
section 5.1 "A host would never multicast" -> is this "A host MUST NOT mult=
icast" or SHOULD NOT ?

section 5.6 "Multicast addresses are considered to be on-link and are resol=
ved as specified in [RFC4944] or the appropriate IP-over-foo document."
However section 5.7 says "As all prefixes but the link-local prefix are alw=
ays assumed to be off-link", implying the contrary that multicast addresse=
s are always off-link.
Also, section 5.6 appears to refer to RFC 4944 Section 9, which is only app=
licable for mesh-under configurations. What about multicast in route-over c=
onfigurations? (Should it be made more explicit here?)

Finally, the text in 5.6 "All other prefixes are assumed to be off-link [R=
FC5889]" should perhaps be moved lower, so that it indicates the final case=
of this section. I.e. to first describe the link-local is on-link case, th=
en the multicast is on-link case, then finally describe the "all other pref=
ixes off-link" case would be clearer I think.

2) Registration lifetime calculation:
section 5.8.2. mentions "the maximum Registration lifetime is about 7 days=
". Taking 65535 units of 60 seconds however, I find 45.5 days?

3) Finally, some typos & minor remarks:

section 1.3 last paragraph: "involunterily" -> "involuntarily"

section 1.4 "messages in host-router interface and" -> "messages in host-ro=
uter interfaces and" ?
"multhop" -> multihop

section 3.1 "mechanism using new Address" ->"mechanism using a new Address"

section 3.5 "As Routers send RAs to hosts, and when routers optionally rece=
ive RA messages or receive multicast NS messages from other Routers the res=
ult is Garbage-collectible NCEs."
-> Maybe more clear using: "When Routers send RAs to hosts, and when route=
rs optionally receive RA messages or receive multicast NS messages from oth=
er Routers, the result is Garbage-collectible NCEs."

section 4.1 "an SLLA option MUST be include" -> abbreviation "SLLA" is not =
defined on first use. Also not used in RFC 4861 main text, so could be defi=
ned here.

section 5.5 (last sent.) "use a router it is registered, it" -> "use a rout=
er it is registered to, it"

overall: The text "section section" appears a few times.

We submitted a new version of ND optimizations for 6LoWPAN, closing the two=
editorial tickets we had from Prague. In addition we made improvements to =
the tables at the end of the document (thanks to Carsten) and aligned the t=
itle to match HC. These changes do not affect implementations of the specif=
ication.

Hi all

This draft is an update on draft-goyal-6lowpan-rpl-compression-00. It consists of the following changes:

1) Made the compression scheme independent of 6lowpan header compression
2) Included the compressed versions of metric/constraint objects
3) Included examples of DIO size with and without compression.

Thanks
Mukul
