Can I just check whether the AgentX bakeoff is still scheduled
for Thursday October 14th ?

I'm hoping to be able to attend on behalf of the UCD team,
but I still need to finally confirm this with our Head of Dept,
and arrange flights and the like.
(Not to mention finish writing the damn code!)

Or does it look likely that the date will be slipped a bit?
(which would be no bad thing from my point of view, given the
more-than-usually-hectic start of term we're still fighting through).

This message reminded me about a comment I had on Mike's
message of Sep 07. In that message Mike said

This site is about 40 minutes from Logan and about 30 minutes from
Manchester airport. The Sheraton Tara hotel is within easy walking
distance, and airport shuttles routinely make the trip there.

I think Mike is being somewhat optimistic about getting to Logan
in 40 minutes, especially if you happen to be traveling during
rush hour.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the SNMP Agent Extensibility Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Definitions of Managed Objects for Extensible SNMP
                          Agents
	Author(s)	: L. Heintz, S. Gudur, M. Ellison
	Filename	: draft-ietf-agentx-mib-05.txt
	Pages : 24
	Date : 04-Oct-99

This memo defines a portion of the Management Information Base (MIB)
for use with network management protocols in the Internet community.
In particular, it describes objects managing SNMP agents that use the
Agent Extensibility (AgentX) Protocol.
This memo specifies a MIB module in a manner that is both compliant
to the SMIv2, and semantically identical to the peer SMIv1
definitions.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

  	Filename	: draft-ietf-agentx-rfc-update-02.txt
	Pages : 83

This memo defines a standardized framework for extensible SNMP
agents. It defines processing entities called master agents and
subagents, a protocol (AgentX) used to communicate between them, and
the elements of procedure by which the extensible agent processes
SNMP protocol messages. This memo obsoletes RFC 2257.

Hi,

Folks are having a hard time scheduling around this date,
so there won't be anything happening on October 14th.

We've gotten some feedback that scheduling a bakeoff at/around
IETF meetings would work out better. Bob Natale has offered to
host one at ACE*COMM during or around the 45th IETF in
Washington DC next month. If that (or some other event) would suit
you better please let Bob/us know.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi,

As MikeD mentioned recently, ACE*COMM has offered to host an
AgentX bake-off for implementers of the current set of specs
in conjunction with the forthcoming (46th) IETF meeting to be
held in DC during the week of Nov 8 (Monday) thru Nov 12.

We would like to target a date of 11/8, 9, or 10 for the bake-off,
allowing for an AgentX IETF meeting on Thurs 11/11 or Fri 11/12
to review implementation reports, charter revisions, and any
potential future work for the WG. We can host the event either
at our Gaithersburg facility or at our Frederick facility. Both
are in suburban Maryland, with relatively easy driving access
from the IETF hotel/meeting site in Northwest DC. The Frederick
facility is a bit farther out, but offers a quieter environment
with ample extra office space for private work if needed. While
we think that one full day should suffice for the actual bake-off
this time, we are more than willing to schedule a preparation
day before the actual interoperability testing for anyone who
needs/wants it.

So, if you have or plan an implementation of the current AgentX
specs, please respond -- on list or, if you prefer, directly to
me (direct responses will remain anonymous) -- to the following
questions:

    1. Organization name: ________________________

    2. Implementation of:
2a. Master agent: [Yes or No] ____________
        2b. Subagent(s): [Yes or No] ____________
        2c. Toolkit(s): [Yes or No] ____________

    3. Platform(s) [list variants, if applicable]:
        3a. UNIX: ________________________
        3b. Win32: ________________________

    4. Plan to attend
Bake-off II: [Yes or No] ____________

    5.  Acceptable date(s):
[Yes to include, No to exclude]
        5a. Mon, 11/8: [Yes or No] ____________
        5b. Tue, 11/9: [Yes or No] ____________
        5c. Wed, 11/10: [Yes or No] ____________

    6. Estimated number of bake-off
        attendees from your organization: _________

    7. Comments, questions, suggestions,
        special needs, etc.:
                            ________________________
        ____________________________________________
        ____________________________________________

This information must be submitted by the end of
this business week (i.e., COB EDT Fri 10/15) to
enable us to schedule the associated AgentX IETF
meeting slot by the IETF Secretariat's scheduling
deadline (Mon, 10/18). So, if you (will) have an
implementation of the current AgentX specs, please
let me know -- one or the other -- your responses
to the above survey asap. Thanks.

Cordially,

BobN

Excellent...SNMP agent extensibility protocols are certainly a
ripe field for research. IETF efforts such as AgentX tend to be
driven more by de facto practice than sound analytical theory
based on controlled experimental research -- although there are
exceptions and even the historical record of AgentX development
will show a few attempts at comparative analysis.

>I also think I could write a sub-agent code for a application

That would be tremendously helpful...in fact, we are right now
at the stage where we are looking for implementation reports
(whether complete or in progress reports).

>These are just ideas. Do you know who should I talk to about
>these ideas? I don't know what I could do to contribute the
>agentX project exactly.

First, go to the IETF home page (www.ietf.org) and access
the Working Groups link and then the AgentX page (under the
Operations and Management link):

    - Download the current documents that will be listed
there, review, and begin implementation based on them.

    - [If you have not already done so], follow the instructions
there for joining the AgentX e-mail list (to whom I am
cc'ing this exchange on your behalf). That will enable
you to participate more fully in our online discussions.

Second, plan to attend the forthcoming IETF meetings in DC, if
at all possible (full details are available on the IETF home
page cited above). While not formally scheduled yet, it is
extremely likely that the AgentX WG will meet on Thursday
(11/11) or (less likely) Friday of that week.

Third, raise further questions, make suggestions, and file
implementation progress reports on the AgentX e-mail list.
A sizable number of highly experienced SNMP agent implementers
read the list and one or more of them will almost always reply
to a technical posting.

>Any suggestion will be very helpful.

I hope the above is a good start for you...also, review back
issues (online) of The Simple Times -- I don't have the URL
handy...but I think it's possibly www.simple-times.org ...an
Altavista search sould find it pretty quickly if that's not
correct. At least one full issue (several years ago) was
devoted to SNMP extensible agent technology, with a focus
on AgentX, and later issues have had occosaional articles
on the topic.

>Thanks in advance.

You're welcome...good luck in your studies.

Hi,

Thus far, I have received no notifications of intent to
attend an AgentX bake-off hosted by ACE*COMM here in the
DC area during the time frame of the forthcoming IETF
meetigs (11/8 - 11/12)...other than the one from myself,
on behalf of ACE*COMM. Today is the cut-off date for
letting me know--negative confirmations from those
with implementations (deployed or in progress) would
also be appreciated.

If we do not get at least two other organizations
indicating intent to attend, we will consider those
bake-off plans dead.

In any case, I will request an AgentX WG meeting
slot for DC to discuss implementation reports and
the future of the WG and its documents.

Hi Bob,

I won't be at the November IETF, so did not register to
attend the bakeoff at ACE*COMM.

We're very interested in attending a bakeoff, that's just
not a good time for us.

Hi,

Unfortunately, with our current schedule, it looks like we will not be able
to participate in the bakeoff. However, we'd be interested in
interoperability testing across the network at around that time.

Unfortunately MG-SOFT won't be attending the IETF meeting
in DC... and thus we won't be able to participate in the
AgentX bakeoff with the MG-SOFT's AgentX implementation.

Hi,

Intel's listserv had a severe problem with that a non-English
language HTML posting for the WinSNMP list the other day (late
Saturday night, I believe). Since I am the "error owner" of
that list, this problem resulted in the listserv sending over
200MB of bogus error messages to my mailbox (hosted on a very
old Ultrix box!) in about a 24-hr period. This caused a series
of problems for me -- I was out of town, working over a 28.8Kbps
dial-up line most of the time) and did not have sys admin privs
on the Ultrix box -- and a loss of most new messages on Sunday
and Monday (10/17-18).

If you sent any messages to the AgentX list or if you sent any
message directly to me during this time frame, please [re-]send
a copy of them to me now. I do not mind getting duplicates of
messages I did receive, so don't hesitate to err on the side of
caution. [Mark, I am up to speed on Bert's ok of the BCP 14
and security section edits and your transmittal to the I-D
editor...thanks.]

If you received any messages via the SNMPv3 list or any which
included me on the cc: list during that frame, please forward
a copy to me. (I know that's unlikely, but just in case.)

Thanks for your understanding and assistance. (This kind
of problem still occurs a couple of times a year with
Intel's listserv...but that's an improvement over what it
was like in the first year or two!)

Cordially,

BobN

Hi -

Don't forget that the current month's archives of the agentx list are
available at ftp://amethyst.bmc.com/pub/agentx/archives/current

Earlier archives are also there, with names of the form
ftp://amethyst.bmc.com/pub/agentx/archives/YYYY-MM, e.g:
ftp://amethyst.bmc.com/pub/agentx/archives/1999-09

(yes, amethyst.bmc.com is the same machine as ftp.peer.com is
the same machine as hanoi.bmc.com)

Gaofeng:

It should be relatively trivial to modify the subagent library to work
with a standard select loop. In fact, that was on my list of things to do
when I left CMU. Look in api.c and protocol.c as a place to start.

The CMU master agent accepts SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c requests. That should

myself).

Hope this helps a little,

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the SNMP Agent Extensibility Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Agent Extensibility (AgentX) Protocol
	Author(s)	: M. Daniele, B. Wijnen, M. Ellison, D. Francisco
	Filename	: draft-ietf-agentx-rfc-update-03.txt
	Pages : 85
	Date : 19-Oct-99

This memo defines a standardized framework for extensible SNMP
agents. It defines processing entities called master agents and
subagents, a protocol (AgentX) used to communicate between them, and
the elements of procedure by which the extensible agent processes
SNMP protocol messages. This memo obsoletes RFC 2257.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-agentx-rfc-update-03.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-agentx-rfc-update-03.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-agentx-rfc-update-03.txt".

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Hi,

Every implementor who responded to the tentative bake-off II
arrangements (week of Nov 8-12, DC area) said that they would
not be able to participate at that time; most said that they
would want to do so at some other time; one explicitly offered
to do interoperability testing over the net around that time
(and others have proposed this in the past). Therefore,
bake-off II will not be held at this time as a physical
gathering. I will post one or more separate messages later
in an attempt to (loosely) organize net-based interoperability
tests for that time frame and beyond.

Given the sizable percentage of implementors who do not
plan to attend the DC IETF and the recent publication of
updated versions of our two docs -- with all known issues*
addressed -- I do not see any need for or value in our
WG holding a separate meeting at the DC IETF. I will
request, however, that either the DISMAN and/or SNMPv3
meeting(s) (or, preferably, the Ops Area meeting, if
one is held) allocate a brief agenda slot for an AgentX
update.

[* The latest rev (.03) was just distributed by the
I-D editor...it differs from .02 only by making more
explicit the use of BCP 14/RFC 2119 meanings for
"MUST", "SHOULD", etc. and the specific inclusion
of IPSec as a suggested TLS protocol in the Security
section. These revs were requested during the IESG
review of the spec. Thanks, Mark!]

Some issues we can work on the list in the coming
weeks then are:

    - Net-based interoperability test (arrangements
      and results)
    - Implementation reports
    - Charter revs or WG retirement
    - Others...?

Cordially,

BobN

As disman WG chair, I have not requested a meeting slot, since it appears
that our current work items and issues can be handled on the mailing list.
I am willing to be persuaded otherwise, but time is running short.

The two documents have just been approved by the IESG.
Thanks to the WG, the Editor and also to Randy, who took the lead
within the IESG (I did not want to do that cause I am listed
as co-author on one of the docs).

The formal announcement will come a a few days from Stev Coya.

Hi -

Due to the relocation of our offices from Sunnyvale to San
Jose, the agentx@dorothy.bmc.com and the disman@dorothy.bmc.com
mailing lists will be down this weekend. I expect the outage
to begin around 00:00:00 UTC on 1999-10-30 (5 p.m. Pacific Time
today). The lists should be back in service on Monday; I'll
send an announcement when I'm confident that they're working.

Any relationship between my opinions and BMC's is probably coincidental.
