Hi everyone,

I recently completed a review of the "issues list" on
the AgentX web site and the e-mail discussion list for
the past several months, in conjunction with a final
review of the [13] implementation reports we received
(and which were summarized on this list prior to the
London IETF). As a result, I would like to make a
final request to the WG membership to comment as to
whether:

1. We should ask the IESG to advance the current
RFCs (2741 and 2742) to Draft Standard status.

or

2. Anyone wants to recommend specific changes to
the documents that are *required* for successful
    implementation or interoperability.

My personal assessment is that the record argues for
#1. We received 13 implementation reports, none of
which identified spec defects preventing successful
implementation or interoperability. In addition, there
are at least two known commercial implementations that
did not file implementation reports. A fair number of
the known implementations are aimed at developers of
SNMP-managed products and are known to have fairly
wide distribution (e.g., several hundred development
organizations). Hence, distribution of AgentX technology
is known to be quite wide and on-going discussions on
several of the public e-mail lists indicate that
development and deployment work is continuing at a
fairly lively pace.

The major area (in my judgment) of potential new work
for AgentX is in the area of sharing authentication
information and/or responsibilities between the master
agent and its body of sub-agents. Most likely we would
want this to be done in the context of SNMPv3 interactions
between SNMPv3 command generator and/or notification receiver
applications and the AgentX master agent. If we want to
pursue this, we should do so in the context of a new
charter for the AgentX WG. I just wanted you to know that
that is on the table for future discussion. It should not
be a part of the determination as to whether to advance
the current documents or modify them for advancement.
We will take it up once that primary issue is resolved.

If you feel that specific changes to the existing documents
are *required* for successful implementation or interoperability,
please post the details, including proposed replacement text,
asap...but no later than Wed, 10/10/01 (5pm EDT).

Questions, suggestions, comments welcomed...as always.

Cordially,

BobN

I can give you only a moderately lame answer at this time...but I
hope it helps all the same --

Actually, piecing together how to do the encoding takes a bit of
research into several document sources (IETF RFCs, ITU ASN.1/BER
specs, Douglas Steedham's book), thinking about their contents,
and (at least in my personal experience!) some trial and error coding
efforts.

However, many of the good secondary sources (i.e., text books on
SNMP) give examples (some more detailed, some less). You can find
a decent listing of such texts (through 1999 or so) in an early
section of the WinSNMP API spec (winsnmp.doc, an MS Word file) at
www.winsnmp.com. There are a number of other web sites that give
SNMP book references as well...AltaVista or google should be helpful
with that.

Good luck!

BobN

Hi

I was trying to find out the difference between the AgentX interface and EMANATE from SNMP Research. Difficulty in migrating from EMANATE to AgentX?

Any pointers appreciated.

Hi -

There are lots of ASN.1 resources out there, though I think
the BER spec itself (X.209's 1988 version is fine for purposes
of the SNMP) is all one really needs. A site with lots of
information and links to many secondary sources is:

Hi,

On behalf of the IETF AgentX WG, this is our formal request to
the IESG to advance the two AgentX RFCs -- RFC2741 (protocol)
and RFC2742 (MIB), both published in January 2000 -- to Draft
Standard status.

The WG collected 13 implementation reports earlier this year
and summarized them on June 20, 2001. This summary report may
be viewed online at:

http://www.ietf.org/IESG/Implementations/AGENTX-IMPLEMENTATION

These reports demonstrated that all AgentX features have been
implemented by two or more independent implementations and that
sub-agents from one implementation are able to interoperate
with master agents from an independent implementation. A number
of the implementations are found in well-known commercial SNMP
products; several are found in widely distributed academic and/or
"open source" projects; implementations beyond those with filed
reports are known to exist.

Neither the referenced implementation reports nor the WG Last Call
on this requested action -- issued on October 1, 2001 -- identified
any changes to the cited RFCs that are required for implementation
or interoperability.

Over the course of its deliberations the WG did identify the desire
to add some mechanism for security credentials verification to a
future version of AgentX...or perhaps via a new adjunct protocol.
The WG intends to discuss the best way to charter this activity
after resolution of the present request for advancement. Following
that discussion, the WG -- in concert with its ADs -- will make
an appropriate request or recommendation (in the event that some
other WG might be more appropriate for the work) to the IESG.

Please let me know if you need anything further from me in this matter.

Cordially,

BobN
Chair, AgentX WG

Probably. This is a fairly common use of subagent technology.

...

The indexing structure of the mibs will provide the answer.
If there are "scalar" objects in the MIBs, and you need to
support multiple indexes, you're stuck with multiple contexts.
Otherwise, each card would just register the table regions
corresponding to its interfaces or whatever. If the mib's
index structure is not sufficient to uniquely identify each
instance that has to be managed, you're have to fall back
on multiple contexts.

  Hi ,

I would like to know how most Agentx implementations incorporate the
  validation functionality.

In particular, I want to know how much of validation should be done by
the Agentx framework and how much of it should be left to the managed
  entity ?

Are there any suggested standards in this area ?

  Thanx,
  Rajesh .

There is no specification for how AgentX is to be integrated into a
master agent or subagent. That information would (or should) be contained
in the documentation for the master agent or subagent construction kit. If
you have received an AgentX subagent executable and need to connect it to
your master agent, you may need to contact whomever you received the
subagent from to get instructions.

Note that your master agent may already be running AgentX protocol.
The command "netstat -na" will show you all active IP sockets on both
Windows and Unix systems - look for a listener on TCP port 705, the default
AgentX IP port. If you are on a Unix system, try "ls /var/agentx" - if
there is a file named "master", then that is almost certainly an AgentX
socket.

	Good luck,

This appears to be in direct violation of RFC 2026 (The
Internet Standards Process -- Revision 3) section 10.
I'll update the spam filters to block future occurrances.
