A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Audio/Video Transport Extensions of the IETF.

Title : RTP/RTCP extension for RTP Splicing Notification
        Authors : Jinwei Xia
                          Roni Even
                          Rachel Huang

Abstract:
Content splicing is a process that replaces the content of a main
multimedia stream with other multimedia content, and delivers the
substitutive multimedia content to the receivers for a period of
time. The splicer is designed to handle RTP splicing and needs to
know when to start and end the splicing.

This memo defines two RTP/RTCP extensions to indicate the splicing
related information to the splicer: an RTP header extension that
conveys the information in-band and an RTCP packet that conveys the
   information out-of-band.

The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'RTP/RTCP extension for RTP Splicing Notification'
  (draft-ietf-avtext-splicing-notification-09.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Audio/Video Transport Extensions
Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Alexey Melnikov, Ben Campbell and Alissa
Cooper.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-avtext-splicing-notification/

Technical Summary

Content splicing is a process that replaces the content of a main multimedia stream with other multimedia content, and delivers the substitutive multimedia content to the receivers for a period of time. The splicer is designed to handle RTP splicing and needs to know when to start and end the splicing. This memo defines two RTP/RTCP extensions to indicate the splicing related information to the splicer: an RTP header extension that conveys the information in-band and an RTCP packet that conveys the information out-of-band.

Working Group Summary

The document went through a working group last call. There were
comments and the document was updated to resolve all comments.

The use case of this work (multimedia streaming over RTP) is somewhat
distant from the primary expertise of many AVTEXT working group
participants, so a call was specifically put out to constituencies
that would use the work in order to determine interest and
correctness. A number of such constituencies responded that they were
interested in the work.

An IPR declaration was filed late, after the work had been accepted as
a work item of the working group, from the employer of some of the
document's authors. (The authors indicated that the IPR was from a
different area of the company than the one they worked in.) The
working group considered this and decided that this would not block
going forward with the document.

Document Quality

The document got good reviews from several AVTEXT members.

The document was reviewed by the SDP Directorate, and changes were
made following the comments that were received.

There are reports that at least one vendor has begun field trials of
the mechanism.

Personnel

The Document Shepherd is Jonathan Lennox; the Responsible Area
Director is Ben Campbell.

IESG Note

This version has normative downrefs to RFC 7201 and RFC 7667, that were added as a result of
IETF last call. We ran a second, abbreviated last call that explicitly called out the downrefs
  and received no objections.

1. It's better to indicate in the abstract that this draft updates RF=
C5104.

2. Runing idnits indicates that references to "I-D.ietf-mmusic-rid" a=
nd "I-D.ietf-mmusic-sdp-simulcast" are unused.

3. In section 1, item b., s/Requiring that /Requiring /

4. In section 4, "in sections 3.5.1.5 of RFC 5104", do you mean secti=
on 3.4.1.5?

Subject: [avtext] WGLC: draft-ietf-avtext-avpf-ccm-layered-01

Dear all,

As we agreed in the meeting, draft-ietf-avtext-avpf-ccm-layered-01 is ready=
 for WGLC now.

Today will begin a two-week WGLC on https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-=
avtext-avpf-ccm-layered-01. Please have a careful review and raise any issu=
es you find, and state your support (or lack thereof) on list. This is impo=
rtant to ensure that the document we move on to the IESG has been double-ch=
ecked in detail.

The WGLC will end on Sunday, August 7, 2016.

BR,

Rachel

Hello,
it would be great having frame size (width and height) info in the Frame
Marking RTP header extension [1].

Why?
For example, in the case of using simulcast in an SFU, selecting the stream
by the size would ease the application development and improve the
experience of the users.
Application developers don't usually have deep knowledge about media like
bitrate, etc., but they know which video size has to be rendered in the
GUI, which may depend on the client where the app is running: a mobile, a
PC with a 13"=C2=B7 screen, a PC with 27" screen, etc.

In this way and taking a videoconference app as example, if a participant
select another participant to be rendered as main video, the app could ask
the SFU to select the video quality that better matches to 800x600 size.

What do you think about this idea?

Thanks and best regards!!

Miguel,

You make the assumption that the media distributor will not see the SDP,=
=20
I suppose. While certainly a valid model, I'll admit that I had=20
personally assumed any media forwarding function would see the SDP (or=20
at least be told the PT values and any relevant flow information similar=
=20
to what RFC 6236 provides) and would thus know which PT values=20
correspond to what video resolutions if simulcast is employed.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Audio/Video Transport Extensions of the IETF.

Title : RTP Stream Identifier Source Description (SDES)
        Authors : Adam Roach
                          Suhas Nandakumar
                          Peter Thatcher
	Filename : draft-ietf-avtext-rid-08.txt
	Pages : 9
	Date : 2016-08-26

Abstract:
This document defines and registers two new RTCP Stream Identifier
Source Description (SDES) items. One, named RtpStreamId, is used for
unique identification of RTP streams. The other,
RepairedRtpStreamId, can be used to identify which stream a
redundancy RTP stream is to be used to repair.

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-avtext-rid/

There's also a htmlized version available at:

COMMENT:

In this text from the Introduction,

RTP sessions frequently consist of multiple streams,

would it be possible to add a word or two explaining why this happens? If
it's true that this happens because multiple media types, or codecs, or
... are in use in the same RTP session, that's the level of detail I'm
thinking about.

In this text:

At the same time, when redundancy RTP streams are in use,

could you provide a reference for redundancy RTP streams? I'm guessing
this is using RFC 7198, but that's just a guess.

I was impressed that you included this,

   These
redundant RTP streams may also contain their own unique RtpStreamId.

but (of course) started wondering why you'd do that - can the RtpStreamId
for a redundancy RTP stream appear as a RepairedRtpStreamId for a third
RTP stream? Or is there some other reason to assign an RtpStreamId?

I assume that the media distributor has the information from the SDP (it
performs the SDP negotiation which each "client"), but the point is that
encoders may change the video size depending on the available bandwidth,
the complexivity of the video source, etc., unless the sender forces the
encoders' configuration with a fix frame size...

<div>it would be great having frame size (width and height) info in the Fra=

<br>
</div>
<div>Why?<br>
</div>
<div>For example, in the case of using simulcast in an SFU, selecting the s=
tream by the size would ease the application development and improve the ex=
perience of the users.<br>
</div>
<div>Application developers don&#39;t usually have deep knowledge about med=
ia like bitrate, etc., but they know which video size has to be rendered in=
the GUI, which may depend on the client where the app is running: a mobile=
, a PC with a 13&quot;=C2=B7 screen,
 a PC with 27&quot; screen, etc.<br>
</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>In this way and taking a videoconference app as example, if a particip=
ant select another participant to be rendered as main video, the app could =
ask the SFU to select the video quality that better matches to 800x600 size=
.<br>

<div>What do you think about this idea?<br>

There is one use of normative language but no rfc2119 boilerplate:

"RtpStreamId and RepairedStreamId MUST contain only alphanumeric
characters."

I would actually recommend to add more normative language (and the
boilerplate), e.g.:

" To be clear: the value carried in a RepairedRtpStreamId MUST
match the RtpStreamId value from another RTP stream in the same
session. For example, if a source RTP stream is identified by
RtpStreamId "A", then any redundancy RTP stream that repairs that
source RTP stream will contain a RepairedRtpStreamId of "A" (if this
mechanism is being used to perform such correlation). These
redundant RTP streams MAY also contain their own unique RtpStreamId."

Source Description (SDES) items are normally transported in the RTP
Control Protocol (RTCP). In some cases, it can be beneficial to
speed up the delivery of these items. The main case is when a new
synchronization source (SSRC) joins an RTP session and the receivers
need this source's identity, relation to other sources, or its
synchronization context, all of which may be fully or partially
identified using SDES items. To enable this optimization, this
document specifies a new RTP header extension that can carry SDES
items.

This document is a product of the Audio/Video Transport Extensions Working Group of the IETF.

This is now a Proposed Standard.

STANDARDS TRACK: This document specifies an Internet Standards Track
protocol for the Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions
for improvements. Please refer to the current edition of the Official
Internet Protocol Standards (https://www.rfc-editor.org/standards) for the
standardization state and status of this protocol. Distribution of this
memo is unlimited.
