Hi All,

I've found a couple of complicated tests for .1w in
"Bridge Functions Consortium Test Suite"
(ftp://public.iol.unh.edu/pub/bfc/testsuites/rstp/
from http://www.iol.unh.edu/testsuites/bfc/)

The questions are:
1. How strong do these tests correspond to .1w?
2. Did anyone from IEEE 801.1 WG check these tests?
3. Why these tests are not a part (as an anex) of .1w?

Best regards, Ali

Ali -

I can't answer the first 2 of your questions; however, the short answer to
the third question is that the test suite you refer to has never been
submitted to 802.1 for their consideration, and in any event, development
of test suites was not part of the scope of the 802.1w project.

Tony

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Bridge MIB Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Definitions of Managed Objects for Bridges with Rapid
                          Spanning Tree Protocol
	Author(s)	: E. Bell, V. Ngai
	Filename	: draft-ietf-bridge-rstpmib-03.txt
	Pages : 17
	Date : 18-Jun-02

This memo defines a portion of the Management Information Base (MIB)
for use with network management protocols in TCP/IP based internets.
In particular, it defines a MIB module for managing the Rapid
Spanning Tree capability defined by the IEEE P802.1t [802.1t] and
P802.1w [802.1w] amendments to IEEE Std 802.1D-1998 for bridging
between Local Area Network (LAN) segments.
Provisions are made for support of transparent bridging. Provisions
are also made so that these objects apply to bridges connected by
subnetworks other than LAN segments. This memo also includes a MIB
module in a manner that is compliant to SMIv2 [RFC2578].

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-bridge-rstpmib-03.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-bridge-rstpmib-03.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-bridge-rstpmib-03.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

In RFC 2684 on Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM Adaptation Layer 5, the
Payload Format for Bridged Ethernet/802.3 PDUs is defined as follows:

                +-------------------------------+
   MAC destination address
                +-------------------------------+

  (remainder of MAC frame)

                +-------------------------------+
LAN FCS (if PID is 0x00-01)
                +-------------------------------+

The LAN FCS option is VC dependent.
In case that the LAN FCS is supported, duplicate checksum calculations are
performed: one for the AAL5 frame and one for the Ethernet frame.

In what cases is it required/suggested/worth to support the LAN FCS when
transmitting a packet within an AAL5 packet over an ATM network?

Can a bridge that resides at the end of the ATM, de-capsulate the ATM packet
and transmit the Ethernet packet over a LAN, calculate the LAN FCS and set
it in the Ethernet packet (if required)?

Thanks in advance,
Nurit Sprecher

One more question please.
In case that the LAN FCS is not supported (e.g. in LLC encapsulation format
the PID is 0x00-07), does the LAN FCS appear in the packet with arbitrary
value? I guess that the LAN FCS does not appear in the packet at all in such
a case. Can you please confirm it?
Thanks again, Nurit.

Subject:	Support of LAN FCS in Ethernet packet over
ATM AAL5.

In RFC 2684 on Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM
Adaptation Layer 5, the Payload Format for Bridged Ethernet/802.3 PDUs is
defined as follows:

		                +-------------------------------+
   MAC destination address
		                +-------------------------------+

  (remainder of MAC frame)

		                +-------------------------------+
LAN FCS (if PID is 0x00-01)
		                +-------------------------------+

The LAN FCS option is VC dependent.
In case that the LAN FCS is supported, duplicate checksum
calculations are performed: one for the AAL5 frame and one for the Ethernet
frame.

In what cases is it required/suggested/worth to support the
LAN FCS when transmitting a packet within an AAL5 packet over an ATM
network?

Can a bridge that resides at the end of the ATM,
de-capsulate the ATM packet and transmit the Ethernet packet over a LAN,
calculate the LAN FCS and set it in the Ethernet packet (if required)?

		Thanks in advance,
		Nurit Sprecher
