At the IETF99 Hackathon, we plan to do some work on using COSE in the =
network.  See below.

Gr=C3=BC=C3=9Fe, Carsten

# COSE in the network: Secure Wake-on-Radio (SWORN)

## Champions

* Olaf Bergmann
* Benjamin Piepiora

## Background

COSE is the CBOR object signing and encryption specification, RFC =
8152-to-be.

COSE is mostly thought as a component for application protocols, but
it can be used in the network as well.

Wake-on-Radio can save a lot of power for battery-operated devices by
having them wake up and consume power only when there is actually
something to do. But Wake-on-Radio provides a too easy DoS vector for
a battery depletion attack. Secure Wake-on-Radio Nudging (SWORN)
enables a last-hop router to find out if the correspondent node was
authorized to wake up the device with a packet.

## Project

* Implement SWORN in an actual IoT scenario with Wake-on-Radio
* Demonstrate the power savings achievable
* Demonstrate the workflow for getting a correspondent node authorized
* Cooperate with other COSE connoisseurs and IoT power savers

* Specification: <https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-bormann-t2trg-sworn>

Concise Binary Object Representation (CBOR) is a data format designed
for small code size and small message size. There is a need for the
ability to have basic security services defined for this data format.
This document defines the CBOR Object Signing and Encryption (COSE)
protocol. This specification describes how to create and process
signatures, message authentication codes, and encryption using CBOR
for serialization. This specification additionally describes how to
represent cryptographic keys using CBOR.

This document is a product of the CBOR Object Signing and Encryption Working Group of the IETF.

This is now a Proposed Standard.

STANDARDS TRACK: This document specifies an Internet Standards Track
protocol for the Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions
for improvements. Please refer to the current edition of the Official
Internet Protocol Standards (https://www.rfc-editor.org/standards) for the
standardization state and status of this protocol. Distribution of this
memo is unlimited.

This announcement is sent to the IETF-Announce and rfc-dist lists.
To subscribe or unsubscribe, see
  https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/ietf-announce

For searching the RFC series, see https://www.rfc-editor.org/search
For downloading RFCs, see https://www.rfc-editor.org/retrieve/bulk

Requests for special distribution should be addressed to either the
author of the RFC in question, or to rfc-editor@rfc-editor.org. Unless
specifically noted otherwise on the RFC itself, all RFCs are for
unlimited distribution.

Congratulations, Jim!

This has been a long time coming, and I started to think we might never =
touch the asymptote=E2=80=A6
But it is done now, and now we can charge forward with CWT and related =
documents, but also with specialized protocols such as SWORN.

Thank you to everybody who helped make this happen!

Updated Terms of Service and new Site Policy repository
------------------------------------------------------------

We're updating our Terms of Service (https://help.github.com/articles/githu=
b-terms-of-service/) and Corporate Terms of Service (https://help.github.co=
m/articles/github-corporate-terms-of-service/). These revisions are the res=
ult of community feedback, along with clarifications and improvements to th=
e readability of both documents. All changes are in separate pull requests =
in a new working repository, github/site-policy (https://github.com/github/=
site-policy). Here, you can view, comment, and suggest additional updates=
=E2=80=94or fork a copy to adapt for your own site.

Please submit your comments by 5:00 pm PST on Friday, July 28. After that, =
we=E2=80=99ll take a week to go through your comments and make changes to i=
mprove the Terms. The new Terms will become effective on Monday, August 7.
