Colleagues,

We're scheduled for a one-hour session on Monday at 17:40 local time. I've
created a preliminary agenda and posted it here for your review and
comments:

https://www.ietf.org/proceedings/93/agenda/agenda-93-dbound

Note that I haven't checked this with Pete yet. I wanted to get this up
since Monday is a deadline for preliminary agendas. We're still free to
change it.

The main question I think we should talk about regarding the agenda is what
we would like to have coming out of that meeting. Goals are good. Are we
looking to agree on a problem statement document (and possibly a re-stated
charter), or a plan for new documents, or both, or something else?

-MSK

This version attempts to update the draft in line with the "questions
to answer" discussion that happened recently. My understanding is
that Casey wants to work on an alternative, so he dropped from the
author list in this version (though he's welcome to re-join -- I've
run out of time before the deadline to get positive confirmation from
Casey that's what he wants).

I'd really like for us to come to some agreemwnt in Prague about what
we're trying to get done, so further discussion on those lines would be
most helpful.

Best regards,

A

There is another draft, which might be considered alternative, though I've
always considered it to be complementary.

In either case, I haven't contributed to the text in this document, so it's
okay I'm not on the authors list.

Sorry, busy weekend/week. Consider this positive confirmation.

I think agreement on a problem statement is a big one, including specific
use cases (John's questions, which you have put on the agenda, are a
reasonable starting place). In conjunction with that I think we need some
definition of what a successful solution (or solutions) look like. That
includes capabilities, characteristics, portability, scalability,
complexity, backwards compatibility, etc.

Thanks!

The terms seem reasonable... except for "portability". I thought about
this yesterday during one of the presentations. "portability" has a lot
of meanings, none of which seem to map very well for "ability to use
offline as well as online".

I can't think of a single word to describe this, but perhaps something
like "connectivity sensitivity" or something like that? (It hurts my
brain when reading this, please someone think of something better!)

Cheers,

Shane

Sounds like it's going in the right direction, but shouldn't it be
"connectivity insensitivity" (but this hurts even more). Or something
like "offline usability" or "suitability for offline use". Or if we can
let go of noun forms, just "suitable for offline use" or some such.

While I verbally mentioned "ability to use offline as well as online" as an
example and important use case of portability, I didn't necessarily intend
it to be *the* definition of portability. I don't think offline/online
should replace "portability", but it should be noted that this is merely
one example. The more general question is: how well can this solution be
used by various applications of different types (e.g., browser, library,
mail server) on different computing platforms (e.g., laptop, phone,
embedded OS) in different network environments (e.g., online, offline,
private network, dial-on-demand), etc?

This is sounding more along the lines of "suitable for limited

laptop, phone, embedded OS) in different network environments (e.g.,
online, offline, private network, dial-on-demand), etc?

"Versatility" seems like a closer match than "portability" to what is
intended. It requires a bit more explanation, but at least it does not
make me think of incorrect things (probably I am too old, so to me
"portability" means going through various voodoo rituals to get your C
code to work in strange systems). :P

Cheers,
