I have received no notes. I=92ll suggest, therefore, that I retarget the =
old list to point to the new list, and we start using the new list. Any =
objections?

=E4=B8=BB=E9=A2=98: planning for ietf90

=20

Hi all,

=20

>From my impression, I believe people showed interest in the following topic=
s, and would like to invite further discussion as we start planning for iet=
f 90.

=20

1, Production data sharing:=20
It seems it is generally agreed that it would be both highly desirable and =
generally hard to get real data from production DCs.=20
I suspect that a security personnel would naturally tend to say =E2=80=9CNO=
=E2=80=9D if he is asked to share a piece of raw data without knowing the r=
isk it bears. Therefore, It may help if he is provided with a concrete list=
of aggregated metric/parameters, which is intended to outline the =E2=80=
=9Cvague big picture=E2=80=9D rather than to capture =E2=80=9Cevery sensiti=
ve detail=E2=80=9D.=20

Hence, I would suggest that we start working on a more concrete =E2=80=9Csp=
ecification=E2=80=9D about what specific data would be helpful based on the=
experience from the research community on working on a general problem.=20

Take the incast problem for instance, the distribution of flow duration/vol=
ume traversing a given bottleneck link may be of interest. What do you thin=
k?

=20

2, Problem statement/analysis

I believe it would be of great value to work on further exploring and bette=
r understanding the potential problems at least for the early phase of DCLC=
.

It is essential to have merge the understanding from DC operators (use-case=
s/expectations), understanding from general research (e.g. exploration of t=
he factors contributing to a given problem and how it would affect the expe=
ctations) and the understanding from device manufactures (e.g. device featu=
res that triggers the contributing factors and affects operator=E2=80=99s e=
xpectation).

>From a very high level, three types of use-cases (i.e. delay-sensitive dist=
ributed applications, virtualization, and multi-tenancy) and two types of p=
roblems (i.e. incast and bufferbloat) have been mentioned in our previous d=
iscussion. I would like to invite more input and concrete work on this dire=
ction.

=20

3, Solutions, of course

Original ideas/on-going work/experience on application of existing technolo=
gies are all welcome. Comparison or general reasoning among different solut=
ions would also be appreciated.

=20

4, research/experimental tools

Original ideas/on-going work/experience on general simulation platform and =
testing guidelines (such as testing methodology and benchmarks) for DCLC re=
levant scenarios.

(We have not been discussing this on the list, but as I am planning testing=

What do you think?

I agree that a specification of =E2=80=9Cwhat constitutes incast=E2=80=9D =
might be useful. Part of that will involve, for example, the worst case =
queue depth that happens when an incast event occurs, and how many =
communications of what kind are involved. If we ask for a literal =
traffic trace, as you say, the risk is high and value is low. However, =
if we were to provide some sort of filter that a set of traffic traces =
could be fed through might come up with a usable summary of the =
information. Suppose, for example, that we were able to place a =
wireshark on the links into the bottleneck (Distribution or top-of-rack) =
switch leading to a requesting host and leading from the TOR to the =
host:

                     Rack
  +------------+
  |Distribution| +----+
Switch +----+TOR
  +------------+ +----+

                    +----+
Host
                    +----+

                    +----+

and capture the seconds before to after the event. We should be able to =
describe that at the time of the event traffic was arriving into the =
rack at <some byte/packet rate>, and we saw <description of stream of =
requests> followed by <description of stream of responses>, followed by =
a return to ambient traffic. What I would expect we would observe is =
that the traffic before used some percentage of the link in a manner =
common to LANs, there was a crunch of data followed by some number of =
aftershocks as TCP did timeout retransmissions, and when the system =
returned to ambient behavior the competing traffic had largely been =
bludgeoned off the link and took a few seconds to recover. We should be =
able to describe that using anonymized addresses and not reporting =
potentially-private data.

I would suggest that the wiresharks be time-synchronized using IEEE =
1588a if possible.

Would it make sense to post an internet draft describing this kind of =
thing so that anyone could comment and perhaps execute it?

factors and affects operator=E2=80=99s expectation).

delay-sensitive distributed applications, virtualization, and =

more input and concrete work on this direction.

Hi,

just one comment: If you want this meeting to be on the agenda, a room =
for 25 will be very small. (For a side meeting, it should be fine.)

Lars

PS: Well two comments: s/Dtaa/Data/g :-)

I got =9325=94 from the size of the mailing list (which isn=92t quite =
25) and the attendance at the London meeting. Happy to be told to plan =
for a larger meeting, or a larger room.

One observation from planning far too many meetings; in any meeting of =
500 people, there is a group of 10-20 trying to get something done. :-)

Is there an obvious way to fix that? Do these, for example, go into a =
wiki that I can update?

right. The basic question is if we want this meeting to be on or off the =
agenda.

If it's on the agenda, there WILL be new people showing up. It's OK to =
tell them to leave if the room is too small, but we can also get a =
bigger room and ask the active participants to come sit upfront, so that =
discussions are easy.

I'll put a comment into the tracker when I approve the room. But I =
wanted to double check on the size first.

What is the smallest =93main=94 room? I would expect that the upper =

Ask Marcia about the room size; depends on the hotel.

I'd ask for 100 people if it's on the agenda.

Hi all,

I am interested in this proposal and glad to follow up the discussion.
We are building internal VDI environment to prevent data leak in our
company, and would like to execute the testing cases if convinient and
provide some testing results in the future.
