Hi,

the IETF is getting closer. Now it would be a good time to start
discussions on any issue that may not be clear enough in the proposed
charter.

http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/dcon/current/msg00002.html

Cheers,

Gonzalo

I find one gaping hole in the charter:

*Why* is this work being undertaken?
What advantages are expected from this compared to using basic xcon?

	Thanks,

Those sound like admirable goals.

Scalability is the one that first came to my mind.

Resilience could be another one, but including it will constrain the
solution. So it would be good to clarify whether, and to what extent,
resilience is a goal. Will we get agreement that this is a goal?

My point is that the goals ought to be mentioned in the charter.
Without, we will never know whether the ultimate solution meets the
goals. Adding them to the charter will then probably lead to (later, as
a WG deliverable) refining them into a more fine-grained set of
requirements for the mechanism.

	Thanks,
	Paul

Paul,

Sure, and in fact it is the one I explicitly mentioned (perhaps with too
little emphasis) in the charter text.

Right. I would personally like to include (at least some 'well-defined'
form of) resilience, but I know this calls for more work in the
potential WG to come. I think this should be one of the discussion
points associated with the charter, in Taipei. Obviously, it would be
great if we were already able to start such discussion *now* on the list.

Agreed.

Thanks for your feedback,

I am greatly looking forward to getting started on the DCON work. Thanks to=
everyone who has worked on the comprehensive set of drafts.=20

I have one high level question about the work. Having read the DCON framewor=
k and requirements drafts, I understand how state will be shared among the d=
istributed elements. However, I am not clear on the media sharing which need=
s to happen for any DCON conference.=20

In a few places, the drafts say media mixing is out of scope, but we do need=
to define how it will work in the simple cascaded case, right? I can see h=
ow mixing optimization could be deferred for later.=20

Absolutely! Cascaded conferencing is the starting point, especially in terms of mixing, and I agree we'll need to at least say a few words about how it will be supposed to work. Things start to get complicated, though, when involving advanced stuff like distributed video mixing, for instance, and that's what we thought would be out of scope when writing the drafts.

Lorenzo,

Great. So media mixing is not completely out of scope, but we will
initially only work on the simple cascaded media mixing.

For the future, it might be useful to do this work in stages. For example:

1. First define simple cascaded media
2. Next, provide ability for a DCON entity to discover the media graph
3. Then define a mechanism for a participant to leave and join the
conference for the purpose of changing their location in the media
graph. This would prevent having to propagate state changes that the
participant has left the conference, then the participant has joined
the conference when they are just changing their point of attachment.
4. Then provide a way for a DCON entity to request media graph changes
in another DCON entity.

Perhaps we decide to only do 1 and 2, or just 1 in the first round of DCON =
work.

Hi Alan,

that sounds definitely interesting. 1) and 2) look feasible short-term
goals. 3) and 4) are needed if we want DCON to be as transparent as
possible to its end-users; I agree with you that these might be
longer-term goals.

Thank you for the inputs!

I do not think that "dcon" is the right name for this effort. I believe that a
system needs to be designed from the beginning as been distributed, and that
assembling together xcon instances will never produce a distributed system (look
at DisCo[1] which, in addition of having a cooler name, is more what I would
call a distributed system).

So I propose the name "hcon", short for Hierarchical CONference, which reflects
better what seems to be the architecture here.

Hi,

I personally don't see what would make DisCo more distributed than DCON
(even though I agree on the fact that DisCo is a cool name ;-) ).
The two proposals, indeed, have many commonalities. I also see backward
compatibility with XCON as a big plus, rather than a drawback.

I can see the point that a workable solution will likely need to be hierarc=
hical, rather than generically distributed.
However, the way I see it, a hierarchical model is still distributed, just =
a particular type of distributed.
So, I'm ok with using the more generic name 'dcon' for distributed conferen=
cing.

I do not think that "dcon" is the right name for this effort. I believe th=
at a system needs to be designed from the beginning as been distributed, an=
d that assembling together xcon instances will never produce a distributed =
system (look at DisCo[1] which, in addition of having a cooler name, is mor=
e what I would call a distributed system).

So I propose the name "hcon", short for Hierarchical CONference, which refl=
ects better what seems to be the architecture here.
